Bitcoin extended its recent declines on Tuesday, falling further below $40,000 to its lowest level since the beginning of December. Some have pointed to short-term selling pressure from exits from the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), which has seen about $2 billion in outflows since Jan. 19 while BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust and Fidelity's Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund have each seen more than $1 billion in inflow. Expectations around the event emerged last summer intensified in August, pushing the bitcoin price steadily higher. The move in bitcoin continued to pull the rest of the crypto market lower. Microstrategy , which has long traded as a proxy for the bitcoin price, lost 3%, while the biggest miners, Marathon Digital and Riot Platforms , fell 3% and 4%, respectively.

The newly launched bitcoin exchange-traded funds are showing early signs of success, but they have so far fallen short of being the massive boost for crypto some bulls predicted. BTC.CM= YTD mountain Bitcoin has retreated since the launch of the bitcoin ETFs. This fall comes after some crypto investors had cited the ETF launches as a catalyst that could propel bitcoin to $100,000 in 2024. That discount likely attracted arbitrage players who used the ETF launch as an opportunity to close out their trade. Yesterday, all Bitcoin ETFs combined traded $2.2Bn, IBIT traded $340Mn.

Davos, SWITZERLAND — China returned to Davos in full force this week as it attempts to thaw relations with the international community and court investment following years of Covid-19 lockdowns and rising geopolitical tensions. Li went on to meet for lunch with a host of top business leaders, including the CEOs of JPMorgan, Bank of America, Standard Chartered and Blackstone. As Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani highlighted in a note to clients Thursday, BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has been an early winner among the spot bitcoin ETFs that were approved last week. However, the fund has seen about $1 billion in net outflows over the past week, according to FactSet. Even with the GBTC outflows, the spot bitcoin funds have still seen hundreds of millions of net inflows, according to FactSet. "GBTC at 150 bps fee vs. ~20bps fee for rest, would mean cheaper ETFs will continue to absorb GBTC outflows. In that context, $900m of net inflows remains impressive," Bernstein's Chhugani said in a note.

Investors are continuing to pour cash into money market funds, thanks to their juicy 5% yields. In the month of January, money market funds typically see outflows after having big inflows in December, she said. That's because there is generally a lag between the cuts and money market fund yields coming down. Still, even as yields in money market funds eventually go down, they will still be attractive, said Peter Crane, founder of Crane Data. Typically, retail investors have an allocation of about 5% or 10% in cash, including money market funds.

The broad monster rally which started in November has shown no signs of stalling yet, but it will eventually. We'll present an options trade here to capitalize on that sector rotation, specifically how to bet against an industry likely to see outflows. If the healthcare sector keeps pulling back, most of the stocks in this sector will also tend to pull back. This is a lot of money for a mere $600 potential profit. Since I am paying a debit to buy the $420 call, it also reduces my profit potential to $155.

The ETF flowdown: 2023 is back on pace to be a solid year

watch nowDespite a sluggish start to the year, a record number of product launches and a red-hot November have put 2023 back on pace to be a solid year for ETFs. Roughly $1 trillion has gone into money market funds this year, but some are questioning whether the solid year-end stock rally will attract some of those flows back into equities. "You saw that enormous cash pileup going into money markets, and ETF flows were muted. "We talked about the money market funds," he said. He pointed to strong inflows into high-yield ETFs such as the iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG) and SPDR Bloomberg High Yield Bond ETF (JNK) and SPDR Bloomberg Short Term High Yield Bond ETF (SJNK) — along with dividend ETFs such as the Pacer U.S. Cash Cows 100 ETF (COWZ).

[1/2] A Chinese national flag flutters at the headquarters of a commercial bank on a financial street near the headquarters of the People's Bank of China, China's central bank, in central Beijing November 24, 2014. "The outlook change also reflects the increased risks related to structurally and persistently lower medium-term economic growth and the ongoing downsizing of the property sector," Moody's said. "Moody's concerns about China's economic growth prospects, fiscal sustainability and other aspects are unnecessary," the ministry said. STRUGGLING FOR TRACTIONMost analysts believe China's growth is on track to hit the government's target of around 5% this year, but that compares with a COVID-weakened 2022 and activity is highly uneven. Analysts widely agree that China's growth is downshifting from breakneck expansion in the past few decades.

Crypto stocks surge as bitcoin hits fresh 2023 high

"What we have right now is a risk rally, and bitcoin is also benefiting big time from falling yields. Halving is a process designed to slow the release of bitcoin, and bitcoin prices have typically rallied following halvings. The stock rose nearly 62% in November, even as the crypto exchange reported a decline in third-quarter trading volumes. The ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF , which tracks bitcoin futures, rose 7.7% and looked set to touch an over one-year high, while the ProShares Short Bitcoin Strategy ETF that allows traders to bet on a fall in bitcoin futures fell 7.7%. However, the recent rally has sent bitcoin up more than 150% so far in 2023, on course for its best annual performance since 2020.

Fed futures markets think a first cut may come as soon as March - with a quarter-point easing by then already two-thirds priced. Two-year Treasury yields hit their lowest since June on Friday and 10-year yields their lowest in three months, although they edged higher on Monday. U.S. crude hit its lowest in two weeks and is tracking year-on-year losses of almost 10%. But that is widening into yearend as peak rate hopes encourage some rotation to smaller cap stocks.

This was also the ninth month of net outflows this year, the bank said, dragging emerging Asia to become the region with the largest net outflows across the world. U.S.-listed Chinese stocks and mainland A-shares led the selloff in November, Goldman Sachs said, adding it was "partially offset by net buying in H-shares." Within emerging Asia markets, Taiwan also recorded net outflows last month, while South Korea saw the largest net inflows, Goldman Sachs said. Hedge funds rotated their positions to developed Asia markets, including Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan, which saw net purchases in the month. An electronic board shows Shanghai and Shenzhen stock indexes, at the Lujiazui financial district in Shanghai, China October 25, 2022. But the extent of the political and economic jitters merely mirrors other signs of a long-term China exit well beyond portfolio flows. Earlier this month, China recorded its first-ever quarterly deficit in "bricks and mortar" foreign direct investment (FDI). What's more, a multi-year aversion to China investments then risks colliding with deteriorating long-term economic growth dynamics - heightened by rising youth unemployment and dire demographics. Despite some recent upgrades of China growth forecasts, yet another business survey this week raised red flags.
