Trump puts inflation on the agendaThe inflation risk stalking the markets eased over the summer, but it never really went away. It’s front and center again as investors contend with a Trumponomics crackdown on immigration, a rising trade-war risk and a potential bonanza of tax cuts. An important inflation measure comes out at 10 a.m. Eastern: the Personal Consumption Expenditures index report. Economists fear that it could add bottlenecks and costs to supply chains and reignite inflation, and that it could scramble the Fed’s policy on interest rates. next year would jump by an additional 1.1 percentage points if the Trump tariffs were fully enacted.

— As President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration solidifies its plan for mass deportations, local law enforcement agencies are preparing to ramp up a controversial program that allows them to partner with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It authorizes ICE to delegate to state and local law enforcement officers the ability to perform certain functions of an immigration officer. According to ICE, as of May 2024, law enforcement agencies in 21 states participated in the program. Other critics have also said the 287(g) program merely serves as a political messaging tool for conservative sheriffs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield filed a federal lawsuit against a financial firm owned by his father, James Mayfield, accusing the company of failing to pay back nearly $12 million taken without his authorization. "For the period of time that Plaintiffs’ funds were being funneled to Defendants, Plaintiffs were the primary source of funding and capitalization for Defendants. Under the agreement, Camwood was required to repay $11.7 million plus interest beginning Sept. 30, the lawsuit states. "It is now clear that Defendants had no intention of making Plaintiffs whole when they entered into the Settlement Agreement," the lawsuit states. The death of a 2-year-old western lowland gorilla at a Canadian zoo earlier this month was found to be the result of human error, the zoo announced. The care team member — intending to separate Eyare from other gorillas for an individual training session — accidentally activated the wrong door, striking the young gorilla, who sustained traumatic head injuries. The zoo said that they immediately launched a formal investigation into Eyare's death and removed the gorilla care team member responsible from the workplace following the incident. That member will be "reassigned to another area of the zoo and will undergo further staff training for that area." The zoo said they are also exploring the idea of transitioning to alternative door and control designs, instead of continuing to use hydraulic doors.
