That’s why there is so much at stake in contract negotiations between UPS and the Teamsters union. Without a deal, 340,000 Teamsters are preparing to go on strike at the nation’s largest trucking company starting August 1. A UPS strike could spread disruptions like that across much of the country. Their ability to adjust and find alternatives, it’s going to be challenging.”The economy has changed radically in the 26 years since the last UPS strike in 1997. UPS won’t comment on its contingency plans, saying it is focused on reaching a deal that would avoid a strike.

Multiple sources told CNN that investigators have asked several witnesses before the grand jury and during interviews about the meeting, which happened about six weeks after Donald Trump lost the 2020 election. Some witnesses were asked about the meeting months ago, while several others have faced questions about it more recently, including Rudy Giuliani. Prosecutors have specifically inquired about three outside Trump advisers who participated in the meeting: former Trump lawyer Sidney Powell, one-time national security adviser Michael Flynn and former Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne, sources said. They also discussed naming Powell as special counsel to investigate supposed voter fraud, and Trump invoking martial law as part of his efforts to overturn the election. The December 14 date is of particular interest to prosecutors, sources told CNN.

That would be Elon Musk versus Mark Zuckerberg in Las Vegas, or maybe the Colosseum in Rome. The rival tech billionaires are inching toward a cage match, brokered by Dana White, president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. And for an undercard, how about a sitting U.S. senator versus a union boss? In case that’s not enough testosterone, perhaps some feats of strength are in order. On Thursday, the Democratic representative of New York posted to Twitter a video of himself bench-pressing 405 pounds.

New York CNN —A marathon negotiating session between UPS and the Teamsters union ended early Wednesday morning with both sides accusing the other of walking away from the table. The current contract expires July 31, which means 340,000 UPS workers could go on strike August 1. Many in the shipping community had been looking for a deal between UPS and the teamsters by the end of the July 4 holiday weekend, he said. Amazon also has its own delivery service now. Neither side has publicly detailed the economic offer that UPS made or what the Teamsters are demanding.

One reason Cuba still needs Beijing’s money is that the Biden administration has kept key Trump sanctions in place. When the two countries signed the 2015 nuclear deal, Iran’s foreign minister at the time, Mohammad Javad Zarif, called it “not a ceiling but a solid foundation. We must now begin to build on it.” Iran’s leaders, like Cuba’s, hoped better relations with the United States would spur Western investment. Mr. Trump canceled the nuclear deal and reimposed harsh sanctions. This isn’t the first time the United States has driven smaller nations into the arms of its superpower adversaries.

New York CNN —The Teamsters union says it has walked away from negotiations with United Parcel Service with just over a month to go before its contract expires. In fact, most union labor negotiations include a strike authorization vote by rank and file, and most negotiations conclude with an agreement rather than a strike. Even if they vote no, it does not mean a strike is inevitable, especially this far from a strike deadline. UPS CEO Carol Tome has insisted there can be a deal reached that is a win for the union members, the company and its customers. CNN —The weekend’s events in Russia seem an almost surreal interruption to the long slog of conflict unfolding in neighboring Ukraine. Yevgeny Prigozhin’s challenge to the Russian state erupted and receded in the space of 24 hours, but the consequences of his short-lived mutiny may reverberate for much longer. Prigozhin’s Wagner forces, for all his boasting, were never going to be a match for the Russian security forces. And yet, the saga was humiliating to the Russian military and at least embarrassing to the Kremlin. One Ukrainian military officer was provocatively shown on social media eating popcorn as he watched events in Russia unfold.

Opinion | What ‘The Bear’ Revealed About My Grief

The pilot episode of “The Bear,” FX’s frenetic series about a high-end chef who takes over his family’s blue-collar sandwich shop, opens with an unsettling image. The man swings the door open wide and confronts a great, angry bear. At first, he tries to soothe the beast, whispering, “I know.” But the bear lunges at him. The bear is grief. The kind of trauma that grief imposes has become a popular subject on buzzy TV shows.

One year after the US Supreme Court struck down Roe v Wade and reignited a worldwide protest movement against restricting abortion access, pro-choice advocates in the UK say little progress has been made to increase access to reproductive health services. Proudman said the decision of the US Supreme Court last year to overturn the landmark Roe v Wade ruling had made her reflect on the state of abortion laws in the UK. So, we’re effectively asking that politicians do the same,” O’Brien told CNN. The recent criminal conviction in Stoke-On-Trent has only highlighted how “restrictive” and “draconian” UK abortion laws are, O’Brien said. ‘Ready to take action’Charities such as BPAS which provide abortion care to women on behalf of the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) maintain that the current abortion laws are making life “more difficult” for providers, clinicians and women themselves.

Teamsters will likely authorize a UPS strike Friday

More than 330,000 Teamsters work at UPS (UPS), making it the largest unionized employer in the private sector. New York CNN —Negotiators for UPS and the Teamsters union have reached a tentative agreement on a crucial issue in their contract talks: The shipping giant has finally agreed to install air conditioning – gradually – in its entire fleet of 95,000 delivery vans. The issue of air conditioning was a major bargaining goal for the union in the negotiations. The agreement does not require retrofitting the existing vans with air conditioning. “Heat safety is no exception.”The tentative agreement on air conditioning is not the only sign of progress. The surge in online purchases that started during the height of the pandemic drove record package delivery volumes for UPS and other delivery services.

The front-runner for the Republican nomination, Mr. Trump has treated his indictments as political fund-raising opportunities, seeking to repeatedly tap his loyal base of small donors. Setting aside the $2.1 million raised at the Bedminster event on Tuesday night, the Trump campaign raised $4.5 million since the indictment was announced last week, it said. Mr. Trump, who has made outrage over his legal troubles central to his 2024 bid, is forging ahead with campaign events. Mr. Trump is still completing his legal team for the case. Mr. Trump may still face further charges in Georgia, where he is being investigated for his role in attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

Rare sighting of killer whales off New England coast
  + stars: | 2023-06-14 | by ( Amaya Mcdonald | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —New England Aquarium researchers spotted something unusual on Sunday afternoon during an aerial survey — a group of four killer whales swimming just 40 miles south of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Killer whales, also known as orcas, are more commonly seen in areas surrounding the Arctic ice-edge and the Caribbean, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Katherine McKenna, assistant research scientist at the New England Aquarium in Boston, was the first to notice the group, or pod. Another atypical killer whale sighting — involving particularly large numbers — also occurred last weekend in coastal waters on the other side of the United States, in California’s Monterey Bay. “That was the best sighting I’ve seen in my 35 years of killer whale research,” Black told CNN.

New York CNN —The Teamsters union is holding a vote right now among more than 330,000 members to authorize a strike against UPS. If UPS workers strike, it would be the largest single-employer strike in US history. UPS (UPS) is simply too big – delivering an average of 17 million domestic packages a day – to have all the packages it handles moved by competitors. The strike vote being conducted through July 16 is likely to pass overwhelmingly, as virtually all such votes do. If a deal is reached, but a majority vote against it, there will still be a strike this time.

During those voluntary interviews, the former official told CNN there was a distinct difference in the line of questioning from prosecutors in the two probes. Speaking to CNN on condition of anonymity, the former official said he told federal prosecutors that Trump knew the proper process for declassifying documents and followed it correctly at times while in office.
