New York CNN —More than 250,000 Washington Post readers have canceled their subscriptions since the newspaper announced last week it would not make an endorsement in the presidential race, leading to a “huge spike” in cancelations, the Post reported late Tuesday. The number did not take into account any new subscribers the Post may have added since Friday or any subscribers who have since re-subscribed, the paper reported. The Post reported it began seeing a surge in cancelations within hours of the announcement. “I wish we had made the change earlier than we did, in a moment further from the election and the emotions around it,” Bezos wrote. Instead, Bezos framed his decision to end presidential endorsements as one designed to regain the trust of readers.

A Washington Post spokesperson referred CNN to Lewis’ statement from last week. In the wake of the non-endorsements, more than 250,000 Post readers have canceled their subscriptions, while the Times reported more than 7,000 subscribers canceled for “editorial reasons.”CNN’s Kate Sullivan contributed reporting.

New York CNN —People apparently can’t get enough of the Big Smasher burger, $6 margaritas and Triple Dipper combination platters at Chili’s. The meal deal is now 11% of Chili’s business, with sales soaring 70% over the last year. The Triple Dipper is “very relevant with younger guests and how they prefer to eat with more variety, customization and experiential flavors through our wide variety of dips,” Hochman said. The Triple Dipper is a staple on TikTok, with customers filming their combinations and raving about it. Meanwhile, McDonald’s was seeing its fortunes recover because of the $5 meal deal, but its momentum was stunted because of an E. coli outbreak.

While dozens of American business leaders — your Reeds Hoffman, your Marks Cuban, etc. “I was very grateful … for his willingness to stand up to the pressure from Donald Trump in 2015 … until now. That’s why 88 business leaders last month endorsed Harris. On the other hand, a little back-channeling and olive-branch-extending could give business leaders and their companies some goodwill in an administration helmed by a notoriously impulsive, vengeful leader. In a business world that craves certainty and economic stability, executives may be telling themselves that their silence is purely a business decision.

New York CNN —Americans around the country avoided McDonald’s last week after an E. coli outbreak left dozens of people sick. On Wednesday, the day after the E. coli outbreak was announced, customer visits to McDonald’s dropped 6.4% across the country and 24% in Colorado, where the outbreak was most prevalent, according to Placer.ai, which tracks foot traffic to restaurants and retailers. “The issue appears to be contained to a particular ingredient and geography, and we remain very confident that any contaminated product related to this outbreak has been removed from our supply chain and is out of all McDonald’s restaurants,” McDonald’s said Sunday. The E. coli outbreak has overshadowed McDonald’s business and came as the chain was struggling to win back customers put off by higher prices. The quarter ended on September 30 and did not include sales following the announcement of the E. coli outbreak.

New York CNN —Starbucks is eliminating its controversial olive oil-infused drinks from the menu, less than a year after they made their nationwide debut. “Rather than a flavor or a product, it’s really a platform.”Oleato was the brainchild of former CEO Howard Schultz, who got the idea after meeting with an olive oil producer who introduced him to the practice of consuming a tablespoon of olive oil each day. A pair of reviewers posted a video titled “We Tried Starbucks Olive Oil Coffee Drinks and Seriously Regret It.” Others had mixed feelings , but concluded that the drinks seem more like a stunt — something worth trying but not necessarily worth coming back for. The Oleato menu consists of two drinks: an oat milk latte infused with the extra virgin olive oil; and a toffee nut iced shaken espresso with golden foam, which is vanilla sweet cream infused with extra virgin olive oil into a cold foam. Schultz was effusive about the launch, and it was one of his most high-profile projects before leaving his position.

Angelo was paid by a Democratic political action committee for the post, a fact that’s clearly noted in the caption. Campaigning moves to social mediaIn 2024, political content posted by social media creators has become just as important as traditional celebrity endorsements — if not more. Together, the two organizations paid 15 social media creators to produce content encouraging Latinos to vote. Election advertisements are overseen by a different agency, the Federal Elections Commission, which lacks a similar disclosure rule for individuals who are paid to make endorsements on social media. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has since 2020 allowed paid political content from influencers, so long as the organization paying for it is registered in its ad library.

New York CNN —Gannett, owner of the nation’s largest newspaper chain, announced that its more than 200 publications, including USA Today, will not publish presidential endorsements in the run-up to the November 5 election. The newspapers aren’t alone in declining to publish presidential endorsement in the 2024 race. “Until now.”In 2020, USA Today again broke with its own tradition, this time offering its first full-throated endorsement for Joe Biden’s candidacy. David Mastio, who was part of the USA Today opinion team that published the 2020 endorsement of Biden, called the decision deeply disappointing. “I am deeply disappointed that USA TODAY has lost its voice at this critical time for our country.”

It’s a crucial trend that undercuts one of the biggest arguments Republicans have used to hammer Democrats over the cost of living. Although gas prices are down and the rate of inflation has cooled sharply, consumers are still hurting from years of price hikes. After Russia invaded Ukraine, oil prices skyrocketed due to fears of massive supply disruptions. Drivers rolling up to gas stations in some battleground states are enjoying significant price drops, including Nevada (79 cents cheaper than a year ago), Arizona (78 cents cheaper), Pennsylvania (36 cents cheaper) and Wisconsin (32 cents cheaper). But for now the markets appear to be bracing for muted prices, a situation that should keep a lid on gas prices.

In 2015, Stewart parted ways with “The Daily Show,” after 16 years in the hosting chair, and was followed by Trevor Noah, who hosted the show through 2022. Stewart’s initial return to “The Daily Show,” announced this January, came as the show looked to bolster its struggling ratings. The re-hire has largely paid off, with Stewart’s return consistently delivering higher ratings than the show has seen in recent years. Customers who allegedly withdrew money fraudulently from Chase Bank ATMs using an illegal scheme that blew up on TikTok over the summer could soon have to cut hefty checks back to the bank. These people were able to withdraw funds by writing checks to themselves and immediately withdrawing funds before the checks bounced. Normally, the bank follows the industry standard of making a portion of any check available to customers before the funds clear. However, a temporary glitch allowed customers to withdraw more substantial amounts than typically allowed before a check clears. One case in Houston involves a “masked man” who allegedly deposited a $335,000 check to a defendant’s account.

New York CNN —Nearly 50 locations of TGI Fridays abruptly closed within the past week, an ominous sign for the chain as a reported bankruptcy looms. According to TGI Fridays’ store locator, the chain has 164 restaurants remaining as of Monday — a sharp decline from the 213 that were open last week. TGI Fridays didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about the closures, and a list of the affected locations was not released. At the beginning of the year, TGI Fridays had 270 US locations. The closures come amid reports that TGI Fridays is about to file for bankruptcy.

New York CNN —Target is lowering the price of its Thanksgiving meal bundle, adding to the roughly 8,000 products that have been discounted as it attempts to attract inflation-weary shoppers during the holiday season. Target is the latest major retailer to chop the price of its Thanksgiving meal bundle, joining Aldi and Walmart in a holiday price war. Sam’s Club last week announced a Member’s Mark Thanksgiving meal, which feeds up to 10 people for under $100, made up of the warehouse club’s private label products and is delivered already cooked. Food price inflation has moderated substantially during the past year, Consumer Price Index data shows. Gomez said Target customers are buying in bulk to save money, or purchasing smaller items that have cheaper prices compared to their full-sized counterpart.

New York CNN —Trump Media & Technology Group is losing money, generating very little revenue and its main product Truth Social remains a relatively small player in social media. And yet Wall Street is valuing former President Donald Trump’s social media company at nearly $8 billion, a price tag that has tripled in the span of just five weeks. Since plunging to record lows on September 23, Trump Media’s share price has skyrocketed. Trump Media’s share price saw a sharp decline in July after President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid. “If this were called Joe’s Media Company, we wouldn’t even be talking about it and it wouldn’t have a value anywhere close to this.

A person with knowledge of the matter told CNN that an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris had been drafted by the Post’s editorial board members before it was quashed by Bezos. NPR reported that by midday Monday more than 200,000 people had canceled their digital subscriptions to the Post, citing two people familiar with the matter. Two Post journalists, Molly Roberts and David E. Hoffman both announced Monday they had stepped down from their positions on the editorial board, although both will stay at the paper. A third journalist, Mili Mitra also stepped down, the Post reported, meaning nearly one-third of the 10-member board had resigned. “I cannot sit here any longer on the editorial board and write those editorials while we ourselves have given in to silence,” he said.

The campaigns for Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump both have teams of clippers. (Coincidentally, earlier in the day, Harris had announced plans for an opportunity economy task force for the island.) Most clips aren’t so cataclysmic, but evidence of the “clippers election” can be found all throughout the campaign season. New York CNN —A broken McDonald’s McFlurry machine, arguably one of life’s greatest nuisances, has finally been solved thanks to a court ruling. McDonald’s franchises haven’t been able to fix the soft serve ice cream machines on their own because manufacturing company Taylor owns the copyright and exclusive rights to fix the machines — until now. The inability to make timely fixes has been a bane of the customers’ existence, so much so, that there’s a third-party website called McBroken.com that tracks their availability. Broken ice cream machines have been such a blemish on McDonald’s reputation that even competitors mock them for it. And perhaps a fix can’t come quick enough: Nearly 15% of ice cream machines are broken as of Monday, according to McBroken.

New York CNN —Even for a brand as gargantuan as McDonald’s, the last few months have been… a lot. The timing of the outbreak is especially challenging for McDonald’s as it has been trying to win back customers who’ve been put off by higher prices. Over the summer McDonald’s did an about face to try to win people back. “It had been a pretty strong quarter.”And absent the E. coli outbreak, Tuesday’s earnings call might have been all about the value menu and the Crocs. New York CNN —The daughter of Los Angeles Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong suggested on Saturday that herfather’s decision to block the newspaper’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris was made over Harris’ support for Israel’s war in Gaza. “Our family made the joint decision not to endorse a Presidential candidate. Three members of the Times’ editorial board resigned over the decision. I’m proud of the LA Times’ decision just as I am certain there is no such thing as children of darkness. New York CNN —One day after The Washington Post announced it would not endorse a presidential candidate in this year’s election or in the future, its billionaire owner remains silent as the newspaper’s staff are in turmoil. A source with knowledge told CNN on Friday that an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris had been drafted before it was squashed. But when Baron was in charge of the newspaper, Bezos “resisted that pressure” and he was “proud” and “grateful” for that leadership. “Bezos has other commercial interests, a big stake and Amazon, he has a space company called Blue Origin,” Baron said. “Reporting around the role of The Washington Post owner and the decision not to publish a presidential endorsement has been inaccurate,” Lewis said.
