AI godfather Yoshua Bengio says the risks of AI should not be underplayed. His remarks come after Meta's Yann LeCun accused Bengio and AI founders of "fear-mongering." AdvertisementAdvertisementClaims by Meta's chief AI scientist, Yann LeCun, that AI won't wipe out humanity are dangerous and wrong according to one of his fellow AI godfathers. AdvertisementAdvertisement"If your fear-mongering campaigns succeed, they will inevitably result in what you and I would identify as a catastrophe: a small number of companies will control AI," LeCun wrote. "Existential risk is one problem but the concentration of power, in my opinion, is the number two problem," he said.

Many are shrugging off the supposed existential risks of AI, labeling them a distraction. They argue big tech companies are using the fears to protect their own interests. The timing of the pushback, ahead of the UK's AI safety summit and following Biden's recent executive order on AI, is also significant. More experts are warning that governments' preoccupation with the existential risks of AI is taking priority over the more immediate threats. Merve Hickok, the president of the Center for AI and Digital Policy, raised similar concerns about the UK AI safety summit's emphasis on existential risk.

If you are looking for a job on LinkedIn, best practices include using the banner to show off professional accomplishments and keeping your experiences up to date. "LinkedIn recommendations are an opportunity to reinforce what you are saying about your skills and qualities," says Angelina Darrisaw, career coach and founder of C-Suite Coach. More specifically, "the best recommendations come from someone who has a well built-out LinkedIn profile themselves," says Gorick Ng, Harvard career advisor and author of "The Unspoken Rules." Finally, "credibility in the labor market comes from the organization name or the job title," says Ng. "The higher up you go, the sexier the job title or the more credible the job title," he says.

Evergrande's lawyer said the company was working on a revised plan to "monetise the value" of its two Hong Kong-listed units - Evergrande Property Services Group (6666.HK) and Evergrande New Energy Vehicle Group (NEV) (0708.HK). Sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that plan included allowing Evergrande creditors to swap their debt into equity and bonds tied to these units. Evergrande, Evergrande Property Services and Evergrande NEV declined to comment. "Why would those shareholders want to see new debt issued to replace the existing debt issued by Evergrande, what is the benefit for them?" The announcement, which the state billed as the nation's largest ever investment in offshore wind, comes less than two weeks after New York regulators rejected requests by three offshore wind developers to renegotiate their contracts because of soaring costs. In response, Governor Kathy Hochul pledged to support renewable energy projects to meet the state's climate change goals. The Biden administration, which has made offshore wind development a cornerstone of its plan to decarbonize the nation's power grid, applauded the move. New York is also committing $300 million to the development of offshore wind component manufacturing facilities planned by GE Vernova (GE.N). The job interview is nerve wracking — but there are plenty of ways to prepare to help you feel confident. I myself have messed up during job interviews and while I can't be sure to what extent these mess-ups had an impact, I didn't ultimately get offers for any of the jobs. Here are three mistakes I made in job interviews and why experts say you should avoid them. When you're doing a job interview, "your interviewer is asking themselves, can you do your job?" When you're going in for a job interview, use the job description, your experience of like work and any informational interviews to get a sense of the tasks you could be doing.

With workers threatening to resume strikes from next week at the facilities that supply around 6% of the world's LNG, Chevron and unions were holding negotiations before Australia's industrial arbitrator, the Fair Work Commission. Unions halted weeks of strikes at Chevron's sites in late September after an earlier round of talks produced a deal. However, unions subsequently accused Chevron of reneging on certain commitments and said on Monday they would restart strikes on Oct. 19.

The company logo of Chinese developer Country Garden is pictured at the Shanghai Country Garden Center in Shanghai, China August 9, 2023. Companies accounting for 40% of Chinese home sales - mostly private property developers - have defaulted on debt obligations since a liquidity crisis hit the sector in 2021, leaving many homes unfinished. The developer had been working towards announcing a restructure of its offshore debt, Chinese media reported on Monday. Country Garden faces another big test next week when its entire offshore debt could be deemed in default if it fails to pay a $15 million September coupon by Oct. 17. "The difficult situation shows that Chinese developers face severe liquidity pressure from weak home sales, and repayment to bondholders is still a lower priority," said Gary Ng, senior economist at Natixis Corporate and Investment Bank.

A double-digit gain in the price of rice drove annual inflation to accelerate by 6.1% last month, its fastest pace in four months, according to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority released on Thursday. The country's economic planning agency on Thursday said it would recommend extending the lowered tariff rates on rice until December 2024, a day after Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr lifted the cap on rice prices. Rice inflation quickened by 17.9% in September, the fastest in over 14 years, the statistics authority said, helping fuel the 10.0% food inflation rate for the month. September's faster-than-expected inflation could convince the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) to resume hiking rates after it left its benchmark rate (PHCBIR=ECI) steady at its last two meetings. Last month's inflation print brought year-to-date average inflation to 6.6%.
