I know people in other cultures send money back home, but Senegalese culture is particularly focused on not getting other people's hopes down. I still send the monthly money to my grandma's household, but for other things, I do a critical case-by-case analysis of whether the payment is necessary.

BYD is asking suppliers to cut prices and Tesla is rolling out more discounts. The price war is putting some smaller Chinese players under financial pressure. BYD and Tesla have been playing a game of how-low-can-you-go on EV prices in China for the past year, and they don't seem to be slowing down anytime soon. The rivals are asking suppliers to cut prices and rolling out discounts as they prepare for another round in an ongoing EV battle. Elon Musk's automaker kicked off China's EV price war last April, and is attempting to boost sales as it seeks to deliver a record number of cars this year.

“We have never experienced a period of benefit when we had high tariffs,” he said, referring both to Ikea and the global economy. We will need to understand and adapt.”On Monday, President-elect Trump promised massive hikes in tariffs on goods coming from Mexico, Canada and China. The bulk of Ikea’s goods — some 70% — are produced in Europe, with the remaining 30% made in Asia, mostly China. Last year, Ikea cut prices on roughly 2,000 products — at a cost of more than €2 billion ($2.1 billion) — to give inflation-weary consumers a break. Is bald Reddit the nicest place on the internet?
  + stars: | 2024-11-27 | by ( Oscar Holland | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —The internet isn’t as nice a place as it used to be. Reddit’s r/bald is a 143,000-strong community (comprised mostly of, presumably, bald men) offering advice, support and encouragement to those who’ve taken, or are considering taking, “the plunge” by shaving off their thinning hair. “If there was a top 10 of bald glow ups, you’d be in there somewhere,” reads one of the 13,000 replies. Friends and loved ones may tell us how great we’d look bald but, sadly, we often care more about what strangers (rather than people whose opinions really matter) think of us. There are other ways in which the platform’s design encourages courteous behavior among bald men and beyond.

Gold trades in tight range ahead of US inflation data
  + stars: | 2024-11-27 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Gold prices flitted within a narrow range on Wednesday as investors awaited key U.S. inflation data for insights into the potential scale of a Federal Reserve rate cut next month. Spot gold was steady at $2,635.56 per ounce, as of 0222 GMT, moving largely within a slim $9 range during the session. Gold is traditionally considered a safe-haven investment during periods of economic and geopolitical uncertainty, including trade wars and other conflicts. Investors digested a handful of economic data on Tuesday indicating the economy remained on solid footing. Elsewhere, China's net gold imports via Hong Kong in October fell from September and were down 43% from the previous year, data showed.

Just Eat Takeaway said it was delisting its shares from the London Stock Exchange due to the "low liquidity and trading volumes" of its shares on the exchange. Just Eat Takeaway will delist from the London Stock Exchange next month, in a blow to the U.K.'s ambitions to attract more high-growth tech firms to its stock market. After completing a review of optimal listing venues, the Anglo-Dutch food delivery firm said Wednesday that it intends to delist from London's stock exchange, making Amsterdam Just Eat Takeaway.com's sole trading venue. It has requested that the LSE and the Financial Conduct Authority, the U.K.'s markets watchdog, cancel its listing, so that it can remain primarily listed on the Amsterdam exchange. The delisting will become effective from 8 a.m London time on Dec. 27, while Dec. 24 will mark the last date of trading of Just Eat Takeaway's shares on the LSE.

Higher fuel prices could be in the cards if President-elect Donald Trump follows through with his tariff threats on Canada, according to industry experts, who are skeptical on whether the new levies will ever be implemented. Trump on Monday pledged to implement additional tariffs on China, Canada and Mexico on day one of his presidency, according to his posts on social media platform Truth Social. He said he would sign an executive order on Jan. 20 imposing a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico, a move that may breach the terms of a regional free trade agreement. Goldman Sachs' Co-Head of Global Commodities Research Daan Struyven said that if a 25% levy hit Canadian crude exports to the U.S. "that could, in theory, lead to some pretty significant consequences for three groups." U.S. refiners who rely on Canadian oil barrels could face lower profit margins, and consumers may potentially face higher prices, surmised Struyven.

European markets are heading for a mixed open Wednesday as investors continued to assess the potential impact of President-elect Donald Trump's plans to hike tariffs. Economists have warned of the potential inflationary impact of Trump's fiscal plan, which could see the U.S. Federal Reserve cutting interest rates at a slower pace. Overnight, Asia-Pacific markets were mixed Wednesday, following gains on Wall Street that saw the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average reach new intraday and closing records. U.S. stock futures were little changed on Wednesday morning as traders await the release of the Fed's favorite inflation gauge: the personal consumption expenditures price index. What Is Russia’s Oreshnik Ballistic Missile?
  + stars: | 2024-11-27 | by ( Lara Jakes | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
The dust has settled in Dnipro, Ukraine, where investigators are analyzing the wreckage at a weapons factory struck by a new Russian intermediate-range ballistic missile last week. But the debate continues over the strategic impact of the missile, known as the Oreshnik, both on the battlefield in Ukraine and what it means for NATO states in Europe. President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia touted the missile as an example of Russian technological prowess, built by a domestic military industry unimpeded by Western economic sanctions. The Oreshnik is also capable of carrying nuclear weapons, at a time when Moscow has increased threats of nuclear war. It is still not clear what explosives, if any, the missile delivered in the strike on Dnipro.

At the fruit stand where he works on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Shah Alam sells dozens of bananas a day at 35 cents a piece, or four for a dollar. He does a brisk business in cheap fruit outside Sotheby’s auction house; inside, art can sell for millions. But last Wednesday, Mr. Alam sold a banana that a short time later would be auctioned as part of a work of absurdist art, won by a cryptocurrency entrepreneur for $5.2 million plus more than $1 million in auction-house fees. A few days after the sale, as Mr. Alam stood in the rain on York Avenue and East 72nd Street, snapping bananas free of their bunches, he learned from a reporter what had become of the fruit: It had been duct-taped to a wall as part of a work by the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, and sold to Justin Sun, the Chinese founder of a cryptocurrency platform.
