Consolidation in tech makes it easier for governments to pressure social media companies to take down content, Ferguson told Missouri Republican Sen. Eric Schmitt. Schmitt, as the state’s attorney general in 2022, led a high-profile lawsuit about alleged social media censorship that wound up before the Supreme Court in its last term. Ferguson has weighed in on social media speech in other ways, too. It's minting millionaires while potentially harming others — yet everyone, even the losers, seem to be in on the joke. For the most part, the greatest risk in trading memecoins, which tend to be based on the lifespan of viral internet memes, is the meme itself fading away from the cultural zeitgeist. Some believe memecoins are permitted because the Securities and Exchange Commission has never formally categorized bitcoin as a security. In fact, Trump world has already shown signs of accelerating its embrace of cryptocurrencies. Yet there is clearly a dark side to the memecoin world.

CNN —Owen Wilson proved this weekend that he is the hype man we all need. The “Wedding Crashers” actor made an unexpected appearance during rapper Travis Scott’s rain-soaked set at Rolling Loud on Saturday, according to video footage from the Miami music festival. Wilson came on stage during Scott’s 2023 track “FE!N” and riled the crowd up when he exclaimed, “I’m feining for more!” to help kick off performing the song. While the Rolling Loud stage isn’t where you’d typically expect to find a comedic actor such as Wilson making a cameo, the appearance may not be quite as random as it seems. According to Deadline, the actor’s appearance during Scott’s set on Saturday was for a scene in the film.

The drones have been spotted over New York, New Jersey, and other states in the Northeast, sparking concern and confusion. Hochul said she directed the New York State Intelligence Center to actively investigate the sightings and coordinate with federal law enforcement to address the drones. Democrats ended up cleaning up in the Clinton districts and then padding their majority in the Trump districts in 2018. A majority of the Trump/House Democratic districts have a median household income of less than $65,000, which is also below the national median of $78,000. For Republicans, Trump has shifted their coalition to include more working-class voters and voters of color. The targets include some Trump seats that were not on this year’s battlefield, like Michigan’s 4th District, represented by GOP Rep. Bill Huizenga. Republicans, meanwhile, will try to ensure that Trump voters become reliable GOP voters, and some Republicans acknowledged those voters are not in their camp yet.

The flag of Iran is seen in front of the building of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Headquarters on May 24, 2021 in Vienna, Austria. Iran will not impede U.N. nuclear watchdog's access and inspection of its sites, the head of the country's Atomic Energy Organization said on Saturday. According to a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) earlier this week, Iran has agreed to tougher monitoring by the agency at its Fordow site after it greatly accelerated uranium enrichment to close to weapons grade there. Last week, the IAEA reported that Iran had multiplied the pace of its enrichment to up to 60% purity, close to the 90% of weapons grade, at Fordow. "We have not created and will not create any obstacles for the agency's inspections and access," Atomic Energy Organization head Mohammad Eslami was quoted as saying by Iranian media.

However, experts warn, that doesn’t mean residents should take matters into their own hands: Shooting drones is illegal and could end in serious injury. Officials say the drones flying over New Jersey in the past few weeks appear to be commercial-grade, not recreational. “A private citizen shooting at any aircraft — including unmanned aircraft — poses a significant safety hazard. Abichandani said shooting drones could also set off fires. “If you shoot at it, assuming you target it correctly and you actually hit the drone, the drone is going to fall somewhere.

The hundreds of mysterious New Jersey drone sightings are sparking mounting demands for a more forceful federal response, calls that come as even more sightings are being reported in New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Overnight, 79 sightings were reported across New Jersey alone, a senior official briefed on the drone sightings told NBC News. An ongoing investigation leads officials to believe previously reported New Jersey sightings over the Picatinny Arsenal in Morris County and Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster were indeed drones, a senior official briefed on the drone sightings told NBC News. “The feds can’t control the air space, and yesterday my phone didn’t stop with drone sightings messages,” he said. “These are drones, unmanned aerial systems that have been used as weapons of war around the globe.”

As President Joe Biden makes a final push to confirm judicial nominees before his term in office ends, he is on track to have appointed more federal judges of color than any president before him. If Cheeks is approved, Biden will have appointed 63 Black federal judges, the most of a presidency of any length, according to the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. Both Obama and Bill Clinton each appointed 62 Black judges over the course of their two terms. Senate Democrats vowed to confirm as many Biden nominees as possible before Trump takes office in January and Republicans take control of the Senate. The Lindaburys' debt to Atrium Health from 2009 grew over time to include almost $100,000 in interest charges. Americans owe $220 billion in medical debt, according to KFF, a nonprofit health policy research, polling and news organization. Research conducted by the Urban Institute found that medical debt is more common in the South and among people in low-income ZIP codes. In 2021, the institute found that three North Carolina counties were among the 10 U.S. counties whose residents held the most medical debt. Recognizing the burden that medical debt places on consumers, some states have moved in recent years to remedy the problem.

WASHINGTON — A group of House Republicans representing high-tax states is demanding an increase to the federal deduction for state and local taxes, also known as “SALT,” in order to support an extension of President-elect Donald Trump's tax law next year. The battle centers on the $10,000 limit on deductions for state and local taxes, which Republicans established in a 2017 tax cut bill. You guys can do the math on that one,” Rep. Nick LaLota, R-N.Y., a proponent of a bigger SALT deduction, told NBC News. Because an expiration of [the 2017 tax law] would completely eliminate [the cap on] SALT,” Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., a member of the tax-writing Ways & Means Committee, said in an interview. “I think it would be fiscally irresponsible not to have a SALT cap,” said Tillis, who represents a state where taxpayers don’t use the deduction as much.

WASHINGTON — Key House and Senate lawmakers are demanding top federal law enforcement officials immediately brief them about mysterious drone sightings in New Jersey and New York, as the White House downplayed any potential threats to national security or the public. But lawmakers say that they — and the public — need more information after weeks of sightings in New Jersey and other states. “But the public deserves to know more, and it’s up to the FBI and Homeland Security to brief the public immediately. For weeks, residents have been spotting and taking videos of drones, which officials have described as commercial-grade devices and not typical “hobbyist” drones. "We’re going to try to get answers, and we’ll go from there.”So far, an all-member House briefing on the drones has not been scheduled, though some individual members have been briefed.

On Monday, a group of 20 mayors from Morris County wrote a letter to Murphy expressing “deep concern” and emphasizing the impact on 500,000 county residents and officials. Phone companies maintain records like which phone numbers participated in calls and when those calls happened and potentially the locations of the cell towers their phones connected to. Alan Butler, the executive director and president of the nonprofit Electronic Privacy Information Center, said having one’s phone metadata exposed is a clear violation of privacy. The hacking campaign accessed the metadata of more than a million people, an industry source briefed on the matter said. While some consider phone metadata to be less sensitive than the contents of communications, it can still provide enormous value to intelligence services. That would not typically fall to CISA or the FBI,” the FBI official said.
