Utah GOP Sen. Mike Lee is running for a 3rd term against independent candidate Evan McMullin. In the Senate, Lee serves on the Judiciary Committee, the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, the Joint Economic Committee, and the Special Committee on Aging. Utah independent Senate candidate Evan McMullin. Republicans have won every presidential race in the state since 1968, often with landslide margins, and the last Democrat to win a Senate race in the state was Frank Moss in 1970. In the 2020 presidential election, Trump defeated now-President Joe Biden in Utah by 20 points (58%-38%), a significant drop from Romney's sweeping victory (73%-25%) over Obama in 2012.
Trump issued a re-endorsement for GOP Sen. Mike Lee of Utah after DeSantis shot an ad for him. "The Great People of Utah have a gem in Mike Lee," he said. "Senator Lee has the support of a broad range of conservatives including President Trump, Gov. "To get America on the right path forward we need a Republican majority in the Senate and that's why I'm proud to endorse Mike Lee," DeSantis said in the ad for Lee. Trump helped DeSantis secure the 2018 Republican gubernatorial nomination, but this round DeSantis has not asked for Trump's endorsement.
Google has for years faced regulatory scrutiny over whether it has abused its market power in ad tech. Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai met in Washington several months ago with Sen. Mike Lee , a Utah Republican who sponsored legislation that would require a breakup of the tech giant’s advertising-technology business. Mr. Pichai’s message in opposing the bill was one that has been a common refrain for the company in the face of concerns about its dominance in the sector: Ad technology is a small part of what Google does, he said, and doesn’t make up a significant share of the company’s revenue, according to people familiar with the meeting.

Grocery deal could have European interloper

LONDON, Oct 20 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Good luck to Kroger and Albertsons (ACI.N) – U.S. lawmakers are already getting concerned about a deal. A European interloper could make deal plans even harder. If investors reckoned there was merit in a deal, Muller could also use equity to beef up the offer. So regulators wouldn’t have to worry about a larger Kroger shutting down competing Albertsons stores. Less overlap means fewer operational synergies, so a deal with Ahold might not look as lucrative.
"If we prevail in this race, it will make Utah the most influential state in the union, because nothing will get through the Senate without Utah's support," said McMullin. A former CIA operations officer, McMullin was a Republican until 2016, when Donald Trump won the party's nomination to run for president. But this year, Utah Democrats opted not to nominate a challenger to Lee, a two-term hard-line conservative, ceding the field to McMullin's challenge. Lee dismissed his rival on Monday night as "an opportunistic gadfly supported by the Democratic Party." "You've refused to talk about which party you'd join," Lee told McMullin.
OREM, Utah — Fending off attacks from his independent challenger, Sen. Mike Lee of Utah worked to distinguish himself from former President Donald Trump in a contentious debate Monday evening. Lee faces a challenge from Evan McMullin, a former Republican known most for his long-shot bid for president six years ago, when as an independent he won 21.5% of voters in Utah, including Lee. Lee’s attempts to draw a distinction with Trump reflect the peculiar dynamics emerging in Utah this election cycle. What I think he’s trying to do is draw that contrast,’” Utah Republican Party Chair Carson Jorgensen said. Trump failed to win support from a majority of Utah voters in 2016 and Joe Biden performed better with Utah voters in 2020 than any Democrat since 1964.
The announcement by Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar, chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee antitrust panel, and Republican Senator Mike Lee confirmed a previous report by Reuters. The Salt Lake Tribune appears to have asked candidates to write op-eds explaining why they should be elected. GOP Sen. Mike Lee submitted an op-ed written in the third person that was less than 300 words. —The Salt Lake Tribune (@sltrib) October 16, 2022While Lee was initially listed as the author of the op-ed, the senator's byline was later removed. "The Salt Lake Tribune solicited an essay from the campaign for inclusion in their voter guide. "I'm Evan McMullin," wrote McMullin.
Evan McMullin reaffirmed that he wouldn't caucus with either party if elected to the Senate as an Independent. McMullin contrasted his independence with Mike Lee, his Republican general election opponent. Todd presented a scenario of the Senate having 50-49 composition, with McMullin potentially being a deciding vote on the body's leadership. I think that this will give Utah an added value of influence in the Senate that it just doesn't have. Polling in recent months has largely shown a competitive contest between McMullin and Lee in the solidly Republican state.
WASHINGTON, Oct 14 (Reuters) - The top Republican on a U.S. Senate antitrust panel, Senator Mike Lee, promised on Friday that there would be significant oversight of a plan by Kroger Co (KR.N) to buy rival Albertsons Cos Inc (ACI.N). "Utahns, like all Americans, are suffering from skyrocketing food prices," Lee said in a statement. "I will do everything in my power to ensure our antitrust laws are robustly enforced to protect consumers from anticompetitive mergers that could further exacerbate the financial strain we already feel in the grocery store checkout aisle." GOP Sen. Mike Lee on Tuesday urged fellow Utahn Mitt Romney to back his reelection campaign. During a Fox News interview, Lee said that Romney's support could help the GOP win back the Senate. Romney previously said he wouldn't endorse — as he is friends with Lee and challenger Evan McMullin. Evan McMullin is running as an independent candidate in the 2022 Utah Senate race. Among likely voters, the race remained largely unchanged, with Lee leading McMullin 42% to 37% — and 12% of respondents stating that they were undecided.
Illinois Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who is retiring this cycle after voting to impeach former President Donald Trump, is endorsing a slate of high-profile Democrats (and a few Republicans) in key midterm races. Kinzinger is also backing Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski and independent Senate candidate Evan McMullin in Utah, House Republican hopeful Larry Lazor in Connecticut and a state House candidate in Minnesota. Shapiro, Hobbs, Fontes, Benson and Murkowski are all running against Republican nominees backed by the former president and who have all at least questioned the legitimacy of President Joe Biden’s election. While not backed by Trump, Nevada Republican secretary of state nominee Jim Marchant and Minnesota Republican secretary of state nominee Kim Crockett have also cast doubt on the 2020 election. While Lee subsequently voted to certify the 2020 election, opponents have used those texts to argue he lent a hand to those who sought to discredit the election.
Utah Independent Senate candidate Evan McMullin is hoping to defeat Trump-backed incumbent Sen. Mike Lee by appealing to voters in both parties. CNN's Jeff Zeleny reports.
Mike Lee leads Evan McMullin 36%-34% in a new Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll. The Utah Senate race is shaping up to be one of the most competitive statewide contests in years. "Mike Lee needs some of the moderates and Evan McMullin needs all the moderates and liberals he can convince, but those groups are in a quandary." And while Republican candidates generally enjoy a healthy financial advantage in Utah, McMullin has been able to remain competitive with the incumbent. In the last Deseret News/Hinckley poll — which was conducted in July — Lee held a 41%-36% lead over McMullin.
CNN —The Senate ratified an international climate treaty to phase out hydrofluorocarbons – potent greenhouse gases used in air conditioning and refrigeration. In 2016, the United Nations struck an agreement known as the Kigali Amendment to the 1987 Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. The Kigali amendment is supported by business groups like the Chamber of Commerce and environmental groups like the Natural Resources Defense Council. “Today’s Senate vote was a decade in the making and a profound victory for the climate and the American economy,” said US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry. And in May, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee sent the ratification of the Kigali Amendment to the Senate floor without opposition.
Circuit Court of Appeals, told the Senate Judiciary Committee in her confirmation hearing in Washington that she would follow the June ruling despite having fought to preserve abortion rights. read more"Dobbs is now the law of the land, and I will follow it, as I will follow all Supreme Court precedents," Rikelman said, referring to the Supreme Court case by its name, Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. Democrats are seeking to highlight Republican opposition to abortion rights ahead of the Nov. 8 midterm elections in which control of Congress is at stake. The conservative-majority Supreme Court overturned its landmark 1973 ruling Roe v. Wade that had legalized abortion nationwide. But Rikelman said her personal views do not matter because as a lower court judge, she would be bound by U.S. Supreme Court precedent, including its decision in the Dobbs case, which she promised to "absolutely" follow.

The manner of writing is captivating and adding the pictures to the end of the book, was the perfect way to end this autobiography. At the same time, the twists of the plot are merciless – the reader falls under the spell and into the trap. Although he begins his book by recalling how his mother threw him out of a minibus because of a racist, dangerous driver, he defines very well his relationship with her.

Twitter has closed its political action committee and donated its surplus cash — more than $117,000 — to a pair of charities. Of the charities benefiting from Twitter's money, one focuses on engaging Latinos in the political process, and the other works to "eliminate racial discrimination, champion social justice, and improve race relations" in sports. "This funding will be used to further our mission of promoting full, nonpartisan participation of Latinos in the American political process, from citizenship to public service," Vargas said. To better support and defend our users, Twitter has created #PAC." Despite axing its PAC, Twitter still maintains a robust lobbying presence in Washington, DC.
