But it’s a looming catastrophe for New Orleans, where officials estimate that tens of thousands of the city’s water pipes are made of lead. Many residents aren’t even aware they have lead pipes supplying their drinking water, said Jessica Dandridge, executive director of the Water Collaborative of Greater New Orleans. Dandridge’s organization works both on water quality issues around the city’s lead pipes and stormwater management and flood control, and they are one of BlueConduit’s local partners working to map the pipes. As a result, lead drinking pipes are all over the country; some national estimates say the total number of pipes is around 9.2 million. It’s “almost a sleuthing or detective (work), trying to find out where the pipes are and where they go,” New Orleans City Councilmember JP Morrell told CNN.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans in Wisconsin are threatening to impeach a recently elected state Supreme Court justice and raised the possibility of doing the same to the state’s election director. A Georgia Republican called for impeaching the Fulton County prosecutor who brought racketeering charges against former President Donald Trump. None of the targets met the bar traditionally set for impeachment — credible allegations of committing a crime while in office. Over the past two years, Republicans also have sought to pry Democrats and nonpartisan executives from office through recalls, legislative maneuvers and forced removals, even when no allegations of wrongdoing have surfaced. Previously, Democratic governors who had backed school choice measures had done so in compromise deals with Republican-controlled legislatures. Vouchers have long been viewed in stark partisan terms: Democrats and public school allies say they drain critical resources from public schools. Republicans and school choice advocates say they give freedom to families who may not like their local public schools. That had motivated public school advocates and Democrats to demand billions more for the poorest public schools, a quest that Shapiro has said he supports. Those fluent in the history of school vouchers could think of no other Democratic governor who had embraced them.

House Republicans have temporarily forced themselves out of the presidential line of succession. As a result, House Republicans for the time being would be skipped over entirely. Never before in history has the line of succession gone past the vice president, meaning most of this discussion is purely academic. Still, House Republicans are currently risking what they would be rightfully entitled to thanks to their slim majority following the 2022 midterm elections. Many legal scholars have long had issues with the Truman-era law governing presidential succession.

But union leaders say Trump's record in the White House speaks for itself. While the United Auto Workers union has withheld an endorsement in the 2024 presidential race, its leadership has repeatedly rebuffed Trump. Despite Trump's history of success in courting blue-collar workers in previous elections, union leaders say their members would do well to believe their own eyes. FAITHORN, Mich. Mark Giannunzio said Thursday. Troopers from Michigan State Police’s Iron Mountain post had been called to a home in the Faithorn area of Menominee County about 8 p.m. Wednesday after the girl wandered away. For the first time in its 88-year history, the UAW is on strike at all three of the Detroit companies at once. "We have a bigger point to make," Wegener said, noting the strike sends a larger message about inequality across the industry. In fact, the United Auto Workers-led strike at the Detroit 3 is shaping up to have an outsized effect on the entire automotive industry. "If the UAW does dig their heels in and does well here, it's highly likely that they will get other auto workers who are not UAW auto workers to be very interested," Ambrose Conroy, CEO of consultancy Seraph, said. Even the branding of the strike, which Fain has called the "Stand Up" strike, is a play on the UAW's highly influential 1937 sit-down strike at GM.

Meanwhile, two indoor farming companies that attracted strong startup money — New Jersey's AeroFarms and Kentucky's AppHarvest — filed for bankruptcy reorganization. Advocates say growing indoors uses less water and land and allows food to be grown closer to consumers, saving on transport. Tom Kimmerer, a plant physiologist who taught at the University of Kentucky, has tracked indoor farming alongside his research into the growth of plants both outdoors and inside. He said some companies may be struggling to scale up, with problems that come from launching in spaces that aren't necessarily built specifically for indoor farming.
