WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump stunned Senate Republicans by announcing Wednesday that he will nominate Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., to be attorney general. Some Senate Republicans said the process won’t be smooth sailing. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said it will be “a significant challenge” for Gaetz to win enough votes to be confirmed. I can’t even believe it.”Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., a member of the Judiciary Committee, said Gaetz lacks basic qualifications for the job. “We met with President Trump and said, ‘Please, no more House members after Matt Gaetz,’” Scalise said.

CNN —Plenty of House Republicans are privately jockeying for President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet. “I have 10 colleagues who think they’re going to the Cabinet,” one House GOP lawmaker quipped, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal dynamics. But you’re not going to let three or four go.”Inside the House GOP, many lawmakers and senior aides have long assumed Stefanik would go to the Cabinet. She and Texas Rep. Ronny Jackson, Trump’s former physician, are considered to have some of the tightest relationships between Trump and the House GOP. And privately, Reps. Rep. Matt Gaetz said Thursday that he has learned the House Ethics Committee will subpoena him as it investigates whether the Florida Republican engaged in sexual misconduct with a minor or illicit drug use. Gaetz, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, made the statement in an angry letter to the Ethics Committee that declared he will "no longer voluntarily participate" in the panel's probe. Gaetz said he understands that a subpoena has been "issued, but not served" — but did not say whether he would comply with the subpoena. An Ethics Committee spokesman declined to comment on the letter. Gaetz reportedly helped Trump prepare for his Sept. 10 presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee.

In a "60 Minutes" interview that aired Sunday, FTC Chair Lina Khan said allowing Big Tech to go through hundreds of acquisitions in the past several decades was a mistake that hurt Americans. An FTC spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment. "After some of those firms were bought up by one of the big guys, all of those data privacy policies changed overnight, and so Americans lost those privacy protections." A WhatsApp spokesperson told BI at the time that the company disagreed with the decision and that the penalties were "entirely disproportionate." An FTC spokesperson told CNN in 2023 that, under Khan, the agency has investigated or sued to stop more than three dozen merger proposals.

The campaign said Harris plans to do more interviews with local media in battleground states and speak more with her traveling press corps in the coming days. Her campaign’s media strategy has largely been a continuation of Biden’s, which is to minimize interactions with the media. Some allies said that Harris should use the momentum from the debate to change her cadence of interviews. “I don’t think you can hide for 56 more days from media interviews,” said one Democratic strategist, requesting anonymity to speak candidly. The Harris campaign also held a call that day, but it was off the record.

Standing near them was another figure whose sway with the Republican nominee also cannot be discounted: the far-right provocateur Laura Loomer. Her anti-Muslim social media posts eventually earned her a ban from Twitter that lasted until billionaire Elon Musk bought the website, now known as X, and restored her account. She knows his personal number and has utilized it, one source familiar with the relationship told CNN. When Trump landed in Philadelphia on Tuesday before his debate against Harris, Loomer was among the close allies seen deboarding his private plane. In August of last year, Trump even suggested the campaign hire Loomer for an official role, sources told CNN at the time.

“Let’s have a good debate,” Harris said. The debate amounted to a missed opportunity for many Trump allies, who hoped that a solid performance would turn the page on Harris' "honeymoon" period. “She failed to meet the moment, with President Trump effectively reflecting the economic anxieties off Americans.”“Kamala’s joy doesn’t pay the grocery bills,” he added. “It is important that transgender individuals who rely on the state for care receive the treatment they need, which includes access to treatment associated with gender transition,” Harris wrote. In an early morning call-in to "Fox and Friends," Trump once again defended his debate performance and predicted Swift would regret her endorsement.

In mounting an attack against Trump, Harris can pick and choose from a Golden Corral-scale buffet of material. “I suspect there will be some surprises during the debate,” Jason Miller, a Trump campaign spokesman, said Monday while briefing reporters. Will Trump speak more broadly beyond his base? Even when he knocked Biden out of the race in the last debate, Trump didn’t inspire key voting blocs. “He’s going to talk about what he wants.

The addition of Gabbard is particularly notable given the tense exchanges she had with the vice president during their 2020 race that left Harris rattled. Trump’s team has been sketching out potential responses on reproductive rights with the expectation Harris will make that a focus during the debate. The Trump campaign has insisted the matter is settled. Thus far, no one is expected to sit in for Harris, just as no one played Biden ahead of the June debate. It’s the second time the vice president will visit the city this week after campaigning with Biden on Labor Day.

In contrast, at the RNC convention, President Biden was mentioned only twice in four days.”Facts First: Kennedy’s claim about Biden mentions at the Republican National Convention is not even close to true. The Republican vice presidential nominee, Sen. JD Vance, said the word “Biden” 12 times in his own convention speech. Trump himself said “Biden” twice in his convention speech (during a single reference), but Kennedy’s claim was about the Republicans’ four-day gathering as a whole. The false claim that Biden was mentioned a total of twice over the four days of the Republican convention has been circulating on social media this week. CNN has not conducted or seen a thorough independent analysis of the words used at the Democratic National Convention, which concluded yesterday.

Donald Trump is on a winning streak, which is all the more remarkable because he's barely played the game. He's in the strongest position any Republican presidential hopeful has been in July since George W. Bush in 2000. AdvertisementSince the debate, Biden has faced almost daily onslaught of Democrats calling him to step aside. Even as he's refrained from rallies, he's still ranting on social media. Trump also handed Biden's campaign a major gift by offering one of his signature "I don't know them" denials about Project 2025.

A bipartisan group of Senators introduced a new bill that would ban Congress from trading stocks. The ETHICS act would impose hefty fines against members of Congress that violate the law. The ETHICS legislation, if passed, would immediately ban members of Congress from trading stocks, and it would come with an imposed timeline to divest their stocks when the next session of Congress starts in 2027. The proposed law would also impose hefty fines on Congressional members who violated the trading ban. But the passage of this new stock trading ban faces an uphill battle from Congress itself.

In this gilded echo chamber, Mr. Trump enjoys unwavering devotion — and collects the staggering price of admission. During the 2014-15 season — the last before Mr. Trump officially entered politics — The Times counted 52 fund-raiser events at Mar-a-Lago. More than two dozen midterm candidates had already held fund-raisers on the property when Mr. Trump made that statement. But that changed when Letitia James, the New York attorney general, sued Mr. Trump for exaggerating the value of his properties. And, unlike when Mr. Trump was president, “he was there a lot,” Mr. Rustmann said.

The House Ethics Committee said Tuesday it has identified "additional allegations" against Rep. Matt Gaetz "that merit review," as it continues to investigate the Florida Republican over claims of what it called "sexual misconduct and illicit drug use." The Ethics Committee said it is now eyeing claims that Gaetz — who denies wrongdoing — "dispensed special privileges and favors to individuals with whom he had a personal relationship, and sought to obstruct government investigations of his conduct." The ethics panel also said it had difficulty in obtaining relevant information from Gaetz and others since the probe began in April 2021 amid a federal criminal sex trafficking investigation of Gaetz and a friend, Joel Greenberg. "During the course of its investigation, the Committee has also identified additional allegations that merit review," despite the difficulty of getting information from Gaetz, the Ethics Committee said. Gaetz's fate and the outcome of the ethics probe carry more weight now that Republicans have only a paper-thin majority in the House of Representatives.

CNN —The House Ethics Committee announced Tuesday that it will continue to investigate certain allegations surrounding Rep. Matt Gaetz, including whether the Florida Republican engaged in sexual misconduct, while ending other portions of the probe. In a rare statement updating its work, the bipartisan committee stated some of the allegations against Gaetz “merit continued review” and it has “also identified additional allegations” that warrant investigating. But McCarthy has repeatedly denounced those accusations and has said Gaetz worked to oust him because of the ethics probe. In late 2020, under Trump-appointed Attorney General Bill Barr, the Justice Department opened an investigation into allegations Gaetz may have had sexual contact with a minor. A source familiar with the House panel’s work previously told CNN that the Justice Department’s decision not to bring charges against Gaetz does not impact what the committee will and won’t investigate.
