So the question is, are we going to have issues if rates remain higher for longer?" But financial markets, despite a recent 5.5% selloff for the S&P 500, have largely held up amid the higher-rate landscape. Higher rates can be a good signHistory tells differing stories about the consequences of a hawkish Fed, both for markets and the economy. Higher rates are generally a good thing so long as they're associated with growth. Futures market pricing implies a fed funds rate of 4.32% by December 2025, indicating a higher rate trajectory.

Dazert said he expects new superyacht sales to "go down a little bit further this year" given the continued costs and delays. Sales of new superyachts (yachts over 100 feet long) fell 17% last year, according to the new SuperYacht Times' State of Yachting report. Superyachts sales took a dive in 2023, as long waiting lists, soaring costs and oligarch sanctions hit demand, according to a new report. Americans are picking up some of the slack, accounting for nearly a quarter of all superyacht sales last year. There are now nearly 6,000 superyachts, triple the number in 2002, according to SuperYacht Times.

New York CNN —Tesla is reportedly cutting more than 10% of its global staff of 140,000. It did not mention anything about the slowdown in demand for electric vehicles or about Tesla sales. In the fourth quarter Tesla briefly lost its title for the leader in global EV sales to Chinese automaker BYD. It recaptured the EV sales title from BYD in the first quarter, despite the drop in sales. This is not the first time that Tesla has cut staff.

Tesla is going to trial over a wrongful-death lawsuit brought by the family of Walter Huang. The family alleges that flaws in Tesla's Autopilot system caused the 2018 crash that killed Huang. Walter Huang's Tesla Model X crashed in March 2018 in Mountain View, California. Days after the fatal crash, Tesla said in a blog post that Huang "received several visual and one audible hands-on warning earlier in the drive." Tesla also wants to call the engineer to testify during the trial, but Huang's family opposes it.

But Huang’s family said Tesla oversold its Autopilot technology’s capabilities, and that it is not as safe to use as advertised. Tesla has come under intense scrutiny for its Autopilot technology over the six years since Huang’s fatal crash. That didn’t happen in the case of Huang’s crash, Tesla has said. Although Huang’s family acknowledges he was distracted while the car was driving, they argue Tesla is at fault because it falsely marketed Autopilot as self-driving software. If the jury finds in favor of Huang’s family, Tesla could have to pay damages, and they could add up quickly.

The annual inflation rate across most economies in Europe eased for the third month in a row, nearing the target set by the European Central Bank. The rate was slightly lower than economists expected and brought overall inflation closer to the 2 percent target set by the E.C.B., which will hold its next meeting to set interest rates on April 11. The central bank also keeps a close eye on core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy prices. That dipped to 2.9 percent in the year through March in the eurozone, ticking below the 3-percent mark for the first time since Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine broke out in February 2022, driving up energy prices. Germany, the eurozone’s largest economy, saw consumer prices rise at an annual rate of 2.3 percent in March, its slowest inflation since June 2021.

Hertz CEO out following electric car ‘horror show’

New York CNN —Trouble and turmoil continue at rental car company Hertz. But the problem for Hertz wasn’t necessarily that the cars were electric, and customers simply do not want to drive electric cars. There might not be a charging station, or enough time, for a rental car customer to charge an EV, Ives said. These cases sometimes resulted in Hertz customers being arrested and even imprisoned. Scherr wasn’t the one who decided to make the big bet on EV demand by rental car customers.

Each trip above and below freezing adds another layer of ice until the hail becomes heavy enough to fall down to Earth. The size of hail varies and can be as small as a penny or larger than apples due to varying updraft strengths said Mark Fuchs, senior service hydrologist at the National Weather Service in St. Louis, Missouri. “The stronger the updraft, the larger the hail can be ... anything bigger than two inches is really big,” said Fuchs. A hailstorm that hit Kansas City on April 10, 2001, was the costliest ever in the U.S., causing about $2 billion damage. Some of Japan's biggest companies are expected to formally offer sizeable pay increases at annual talks with unions that wrap up on Wednesday, clearing the way for the central bank to end negative interest rates as early as next week. Some of Japan's biggest companies are expected to formally offer sizeable pay increases at annual talks with unions that wrap up on Wednesday, clearing the way for the central bank to end negative interest rates as early as next week. Economists see substantial wage increases as a prerequisite for the Bank of Japan, or BOJ, to declare that its long-held goals of sustainable wage growth and stable prices are in sight and usher in an end to negative rates in place since 2016. As a result, some analysts expect this year's wage increases at 5% or more, from just under 4% previously. Unions across industries, including automobiles, electronics, metals, heavy machinery and the service sector have all demanded hefty pay hikes.

The fund made headlines for returning 4,144% amid the 2020 stock market crash, an example of a so-called black-swan event. And when the market moves one way, we think that's going to happen forever." Spitznagel's main don'ts to mom-and-pop investors are; don't chase the market, don't time the market, don't place too much confidence in its current direction, and don't make decisions based on short-term Fed moves. Instead, build a portfolio that's positioned so that if the market goes down by 50%, you won't be squeezed. And if the market is up 50%, don't be the sucker that's going to buy up there", Spitznagel said.

NASA's Juno mission found that Jupiter's icy moon Europa produces 1,000 tons of oxygen every 24 hours. That's enough oxygen to keep a million people alive for a day, NASA reported this week. Some of it may get stuck in the ice, some may escape to space, and some may travel downward into Europa's subsurface ocean. Bank of AmericaIn the note, Hartnett laid out more evidence that a bubble could be developing in stocks. The current real 10-year rate is 1.6%, according to Fed data. Hartnett said a falling number of job quitters shows a weakening labor market, hence the Fed's apparent willingness to cut rates soon. February's inflation data will be released next week, but January's data showed that prices are still rising at a pesky pace of 3.1%, above the Fed's stated goal of 2%.
