TSMC's growth was driven by strong demand for artificial intelligence technology. But the market is questioning whether the euphoria over AI and AI chips is sustainable. AdvertisementChip giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company just reported strong growth, thanks to continued enthusiasm for artificial intelligence — even amid persistent questions over the return on investment from the technology. The Taiwanese company's blockbuster results came after Dutch chip equipment maker ASML — a supplier to TSMC — reported guidance on Tuesday that disappointed investors and triggered a sell-off in chip stocks. But it doesn't mean AI demand is fizzling.

Trump's team had asked Chutkan to compel prosecutors in special counsel Jack Smith's office to provide them with additional evidence, including "all information" about foreign interference and influence efforts in the 2020 election. It's part of the Trump team's attempt to present Trump's concerns about mass voter fraud — which were roundly rejected by independent arbiters and courts — as "reasonable" and grounded in reality. Judge Tanya Chutkan pushed back on Trump's claims on Wednesday in an order that rejected all but three of his 14 categories of requests for additional evidence. Trump's state of mind is essential to the case, and Smith's team has alleged that Trump "knew" his election lies "were false." The Supreme Court gutted part of Smith's case over the summer with its ruling on presidential immunity, but the case against Trump is — very slowly — churning towards a potential trial.

A Georgia judge on Tuesday blocked a new rule from the state's election board that would have required counties to count ballots cast on Election Day by hand, a provision critics had said would cause delays and disruptions in reporting results in the battleground state. He has repeatedly praised the three board members who passed the measure, saying they’re “pit bulls fighting for honesty, transparency and victory.”The three members are Janice Johnston, Rick Jeffares and Janelle King. Brian Kemp and the state Democratic Party. In August, the same Georgia board members passed other new rules that would allow county election board members to conduct “reasonable” inquiries before they certify results. Tuesday's temporary injunction also came after McBurney handed Trump allies another defeat, ruling that county election boards in Georgia are not allowed to refuse to certify election results.

AdvertisementThe US's efforts to produce more semiconductor chips have encountered some challenges over the past few years, but the tide may be turning. In 2022, President Joe Biden signed the CHIPS Act into law, which included $39 billion in manufacturing incentives for chip production in the US. Last year, TSMC announced that the official opening of its first Arizona fab would be pushed back from 2024 to 2025. CNN —Six people have been arrested as part of an investigation into a wine fraud ring that allegedly sold fake French wine for up to €15,000 ($16,300) per bottle. Police in Italy searched 14 properties and seized large amounts of wine, wine bottles, counterfeit stickers from top French vineyards and machines used to recap bottles, according to a statement from European law enforcement agency Europol, published Tuesday. “The surge in demand for fine wine in the 21st century… has motivated fraudsters,” George told CNN. “Better training and better knowledge of what bottles of fine wine – and especially old bottles of fine wine – really look like would be useful,” said George. Bolgheri Sassicaia red wine comes from an area on the coast of Tuscany and has become one of Italy’s best-known fine wines since it appeared on the market in the 1970s.

An ASML icon is being displayed on a circuit board, alongside the flags of the USA and China, in this photo illustration taken in Brussels, Belgium, on January 4, 2024. ASML on Tuesday offered the first glimpse into how U.S. restrictions on exports of its advanced chip manufacturing tools to China will impact its sales in the Asian country. The Netherlands-based chip equipment maker said in its earnings report Tuesday, which was released a day early due to a "technical error," that it expects net sales for 2025 to come in between 30 billion euros and 35 billion euros ($32.7 billion and $38.1 billion). ASML is a critical part of the global chip supply chain. While third-quarter net sales at the firm reached 7.5 billion euros — beating expectations — net bookings came in at 2.6 billion euros ($2.83 billion), the company said.

As she steps up her appeals to Black voters, Vice President Kamala Harris appeared on a popular Black radio program Tuesday, saying she is still open to slavery reparations and slamming former President Donald Trump for allegedly sending Covid tests to Russia “when Black people were dying” back home. Drawing on a new book by famed journalist Bob Woodward, Harris slammed Trump for reportedly sending Covid-19 testing devices to Putin when the machines were in short supply back home. Harris also stood by her early support for studying the idea of slavery reparations, which she embraced during her first presidential run in 2019. But when she was asked directly Tuesday, Harris responded: “On the point of reparations, it has to be studied. Trump's campaign responded to the attacks in the interview by pointing to polls that find a majority of Black voters think the country is on the wrong track.

But Trump’s comments on “paper ballots” have puzzled voting experts and election officials – because almost all voters nationwide already use paper ballots. Facts First: Trump’s insistence that the US switch to “paper ballots” is nonsensical. He has mentioned the “paper ballots” claim dozens of times this year alone. And ideally, we go to paper ballots, same-day voting, proof of citizenship – very big – and voter ID.”In an interview last month, Trump said one way to “solve this problem” of mass fraud was to “go to paper ballots.” At a rally in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, he said, “we want to go to paper ballots.” And he said, “we want paper ballots,” in Montezuma Pass, Arizona. For everyone else, there are paper trails that can be checked during a post-election audit or recount.

CNN —A judge in Georgia has paused a new rule from the Georgia State Election Board that would have required officials to hand-count the number of ballots cast at each polling place, criticizing state election officials for approving it so close to Election Day. The hand-count rule is the subject of litigation on multiple fronts and a separate hearing on the matter is set for Wednesday. Passed by the Donald Trump-backed Republican majority on the state election board, the rule would require officials at a polling place to match the number of ballots tallied by voting machines with a hand-count of the number of ballots cast. Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican, has noted the state took several steps to speed up the reporting of results in Georgia this year. He has said the hand-count rule could delay the reporting of results, foster an atmosphere for misinformation and present chain of custody issues for ballots.

How Trump’s tariffs would work
  + stars: | 2024-10-13 | by ( Katie Lobosco | Annette Choi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
Study after study, including one from the federal government’s bipartisan US International Trade Commission, has found that Americans have borne almost the entire cost of Trump’s tariffs on Chinese products. When Trump was in office, he implemented tariffs on about $380 billion worth of goods imported into the US, according to a Tax Foundation analysis. The Trump tariffs also hit foreign steel, aluminum, washing machines and solar panels. But even if Trump implements tariffs on all US imports, the resulting revenue is unlikely to cover all these costs. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget recently estimated that Trump’s tariff plan would not generate enough revenue to pay for his other spending proposals.

The Trump administration “sent us several samples of test kits,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Thursday, broadly supporting Woodward’s claim. Many countries were doing the same.”The Kremlin’s response seemingly contradicts Trump’s denial of Woodward’s claims. Citing a Trump aide, Woodward also reported that there have been “maybe as many as seven” calls between Trump and Putin since Trump left the White House in 2021. Delta Air Lines expects to grow earnings in the fourth quarter, thanks to resilient travel demand and strong bookings for year-end holidays. The Atlanta-based carrier on Thursday forecast fourth-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.60 to $1.85 per share, compared with Wall Street estimates of $1.71, according to LSEG, and above the adjusted $1.28 per share it reported a year earlier. Revenue will likely rise between 2% and 4% from a a year earlier, though the carrier warned it expects a 1-point revenue hit from lower demand before and after the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election. The incident was a $380 million hit to revenue, Delta said. Delta said it still expects its full-year adjusted earnings to come in between $6 to $7 a share, excluding the CrowdStrike impact.
