As expected, the Fed has been coy about cuts, leaving markets torn between pricing in a 25- or 50-basis-point reduction. "In cycles where rate cuts were able to prolong economic expansion and keep corporate earnings on an upward trend, stocks performed quite well," Belski wrote in a mid-September note. AdvertisementWhile rate cuts aren't a cure-all, Belski is confident that the economic expansion will continue, which will keep this bull market on firm footing. "But with significantly strong trailing one-year performance headed into this initial rate cut, future gains are likely to be more muted relative to historical norms." Sectors poised to outperform as the Fed finally cuts ratesAfter outlining how US stocks broadly have fared following cuts in the last four decades, BMO shared relative sector performance before and after periods of rate declines.

New York CNN —The American economy appears to be just hours away from a major milestone: The first interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve since Covid. Yet there remains an unusual amount of drama over the magnitude of that rate cut, with some in Washington calling for a supersized move. Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren wants the Fed to slash interest rates at a pace rarely seen outside of a full-blown crisis. “It is clearly the time for the Fed to cut rates. For instance, in early 2008 the Fed slashed interest rates by three-quarters of a point or more on three occasions.

If Robert Kaplan still had a say in the matter, he'd be pushing for a half percentage point interest rate reduction at this week's Federal Reserve meeting. The former Dallas Fed president told CNBC on Tuesday that making the bolder move of 50 basis points would better position policymakers heading into the latter part of the year and the economic challenges ahead. "If I were sitting at the table, I would be advocating for 50 in this meeting," Kaplan said during a "Squawk Box" interview. One basis point equals 0.01%. Kaplan ran the Dallas Fed from 2015-21 and is now a managing director at Goldman Sachs.

In prior years, the administration has bundled these requests with supplemental funding for disaster relief, Covid-19 and military aid for Ukraine, which made them more politically unpalatable on Capitol Hill. The language proposed by the Biden administration for enhanced Secret Service funding through the 2024 election has appeared in at least one Republican-sponsored funding bill, lending credence to the belief that such an effort would see bipartisan support on the Hill. In a radio interview that aired Tuesday, President Joe Biden reiterated his belief that the Secret Service needs more personnel to handle an elevated threat environment for political candidates. “One of the things is we need more resources,” Biden said. “We need more agents, we need more protection, we need to expand the availability of help.”Biden described the climate as “up across the board,” describing how increased security had changed his style of campaigning.

Analysts say don't chase this Intel pop here

Wall Street analysts are still skeptical on Intel despite its latest moves aimed at righting the ship. Shares of Intel gained more than 3% on Tuesday after the chipmaker said it would turn its foundry business into an independent unit — allowing it to raise outside capital . The analyst added that Intel's plan to establish its foundry business as an independent subsidiary was "expected and not good." "We expect Intel's EPS to be under pressure given its foundry business, which we believe has minimal chance of succeeding," he wrote. Intel shares have lagged the broader semiconductor sector year to date, losing 56% in that time.

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThe aviation industry still sees so-called "sustainable aviation fuel" (SAF) as the only viable way to meet its decarbonization targets, even as opposition and the potential for higher costs for passengers pose obstacles to the fast-growing sector. SAF is a broad term describing fuel that is burned by an aircraft engine, but instead of using kerosene is derived from more sustainable sources. The planemaker said it is collaborating with producer HIF Global on the development of methane-based fuels, and investing in alcohol-to-jet fuel producer LanzaJet. But IATA's own forecast for SAF production to triple in 2024 to 1.9 billion liters would cover just 0.53% of aviation fuel demand for the year. "The truth is, it's going to be more expensive, you can't really sugarcoat that," said HIF Global's Clara Bowman.

Read previewWhen former President Donald Trump spoke to the National Association of Black Journalists in July, he sparked outrage and said his opponent "happened to turn Black." In particular, their responses to questions about economic plans were hazy, all as the economy remains a key issue for many voters. Between questioning Harris' racial identity and whether she passed her bar exam —she did — Trump fielded questions about how he would support Black voters economically. When pressed on his exact plans, Trump redirected the conversation to President Joe Biden's debate performance, immigration policy, and plans for electric vehicles. A similar dynamic played out during the debate — Trump spewed racist rhetoric about Haitian migrants in Ohio, while Harris remained on message.

One of the main takeaways was that the biggest threats to dollar dominance are swelling US debt levels and fiscal deficits, which officials in Washington could step up to tackle. "The biggest challenge to US dollar dominance is the US itself given the mounting public debt levels and elevated fiscal deficits," JPMorgan said, in a note summarizing the webinar. For instance, many alarmists have focused on the dollar's share in foreign reserve holdings, often pointing out that the foreign central banks have piled into gold as an alternative. But this fixation omits the fact that bank deposits, sovereign wealth fund assets, and other dollar instruments have been on the rise among reserve holdings, JPMorgan said. "In China's case, it has had an explicit target to bring down dollar holdings in FX reserve but has shifted USD holdings to state-owned entities.

That also means that AI data centers are growing fast — as is the demand for them. That in turn is set to drive up the demand for cooling systems for data centers. We believe the demand for liquid cooling for AI data centers should sustain for the following 5-10 years, driven by continuous iteration of AI chips and rising heat dissipation requirements," Jefferies said in a Sept. 10 report. Cooling services have been said to improve power efficiency in data centers and, by extension, cost efficiency. CNN —Jared Holz thought about taking one of the new GLP-1 drugs for weight loss for months before he actually filled the prescription. At least a dozen similar experimental weight-loss drugs designed to be taken as pills are working their way through clinical trials, with the most advanced now in the third and final stage of testing. Dushay cited hopes that pill versions of GLP-1 drugs could ease shortages, come at lower cost and enhance convenience. The oral GLP-1 raceRight on the heels of oral semaglutide is a group of drugs led by Eli Lilly’s orforglipron, an oral medication that also targets GLP-1, which is a hormone implicated in insulin regulation, appetite and digestion.
