The outage at Chain Healthcare, the payment management arm of healthcare giant UnitedHealth Group, was caused by a ransomware attack by hackers affiliated with Blackcat, Reuters reported, citing two unnamed sources. AdvertisementLast week's attack on Change Healthcare forced its parent company to disconnect its own systems "to prevent further impact," according to UnitedHealth Group. But experts aren't sure if the group responsible for last week's hack was sponsored by foreign actors.

London CNN —A TikToker whose video showing where to find the real house featured in the hit movie “Saltburn” said she had “no idea” her footage would go viral. The influx of visitors appears to be the result of two TikTok videos that Williams made and posted at the start of this year. She told CNN that she decided to post the content online to highlight the attractions of her local area. Charles Stopford Sackville, owner of Drayton House, told the Mail on Sunday that he had underestimated the amount of interest the movie had generated in his property. Williams told CNN that she did not promote or condone this kind of behavior.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Usher emerged at Las Vegas' Allegiant Stadium for the Super Bowl halftime show seated on a throne, joined by a marching band and a trove of Vegas performers — but stayed its center. It was an immediate confirmation of his position as the ideal halftime performer: one with timeless, well-known hits, masterful choreography, and a devoted audience. The eight-time Grammy award winner is also no stranger to the Super Bowl stage — he made a guest appearance with Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am in 2011. “I got a chance to see a bit of what it felt like,” Usher told The Associated Press in a recent interview. In his first Super Bowl performance, he descended from the stadium ceiling to perform “OMG” in Arlington, Texas.

The S & P 500 broke past 5,000 for the first time ever this week, but investors will see if the momentum can stick in the week ahead with more inflation data and earnings results on deck. On Friday, both the S & P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite were headed for their fifth straight week of gains, and their 14th winning week in 15. FactSet data shows S & P 500 earnings are tracking to have risen 2.8% in the fourth quarter, which would be a second straight quarter of earnings growth, and some expect that positive momentum will remain intact in the weeks ahead. A cooler-than-expected print has the potential to be greeted with enthusiasm, sending the S & P 500 even higher. The S & P 500 is up by 5% this year, with Nvidia higher by more than 40%.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas proposed to the NFL in December 2021. “Let’s just marry these brands, and let’s bring the Super Bowl here,” Steve Hill, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, recalled telling a room of NFL franchise owners. The betrothal culminates Sunday in a not-so-intimate ceremony at Allegiant Stadium, where the city will host its first-ever Super Bowl. He isn’t alone in his excitement: Parking spots for private jets in and around Las Vegas have all been spoken for. Strolling across that span after a major event like the Super Bowl makes for a memory that can't be recreated, Naft said.

Washington CNN —Cybercriminals extorted a record $1.1 billion in ransom payments from victim organizations around the world last year despite US government efforts to cut off their money flows, crypto-tracking firm Chainalysis said in a report released Wednesday. The surge in ransom payments, which nearly doubled the $567 million by Chainalysis in 2022, coincided with a “major escalation in the frequency, scope, and volume of attacks,” the New York based-firm said. After the FBI announced an operation that thwarted $130 million in ransom payments for several months in 2022, a variety of cybercriminal groups have struck US casinos, hospitals and schools in 2023, and have sometimes collected big payouts. MGM Resorts has estimated its recovery costs from a major ransomware attack last year at $100 million. Multiple US government agencies themselves were hacked by a Russian-speaking ransomware gang, as CNN first reported in July, though there were no reports of ransom payments made by those victims.

McLEAN, Va. (AP) — A Virginia Senate committee on Tuesday rejected legislation that would have allowed a referendum on a casino in the wealthy suburbs of the nation’s capital. The committee rejected a motion to kill the bill outright, instead opting to carry the bill over to 2025 for future consideration. A study commissioned in 2019 by the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Committee found that a northern Virginia casino could generate $155 million annually in tax revenue, more than any of the other casinos built in Virginia. Virginia voted in 2020 to allow locations in five cities, subject to referendum. Bristol, Danville, Portsmouth and Norfolk all voted for a casino; Richmond voters twice rejected a proposed casino in that city.
