The pace of inflation likely moderated again in August — further relief for beleaguered consumers still smarting from pandemic-era price shocks. Though price growth has largely returned to the Federal Reserve's official 2% target, the sting of rapid price increases over the past four years lingers for many consumers. The latest inflation report is likely to cement a 0.25% cut in the Federal Reserve's key interest rate, currently at about 5.3%, later this month. In recent years wildfires have regularly burned in and around Wrightwood, a picturesque mountain town 60 miles east of Los Angeles known for its 1930s cabins. In neighboring Orange County, firefighters used bulldozers, helicopters and planes to control a rapidly spreading blaze called the Airport Fire that started Monday and spread to about 3 square miles in only a few hours. Concialdi said the fire was burning away from homes in Orange County, but there are 36 recreational cabins in the area. Harvey Weinstein had heart surgery Monday after he complained of health issues and was moved from a New York City jail to a hospital, a representative for the disgraced movie mogul said. CNN —Shohei Ohtani stole his 47th base of the season on Monday night to take him one step closer to a historic 50-50 season as the Los Angeles Dodgers lost 10-4 to the Chicago Cubs. Despite moving closer to making history, Ohtani was not the only storyline on Monday night. In fact, it was the performances of two former Dodgers, Cody Bellinger and Michael Busch, which decided the game. After the Dodgers halved the deficit in the fifth, the Cubs responded an inning later when Busch’s RBI single brought home Bellinger, and catcher Miguel Amaya batted in two more. An impressive return to LA for Bellinger was completed with an RBI single in the top of the ninth, followed by an excellent diving catch to kick off the bottom.

The number of homes that sold for $10 million or more in the second quarter jumped 44% in Palm Beach, 27% in Miami and 16% in New York, according to a report from real estate firm Knight Frank. New York led the U.S. in $10 million-plus sales, with 72, its highest total in two years, according to the report. Miami came in second with 55, followed by Los Angeles with 42 and Palm Beach with 36. In June, a historic 3.2-acre estate in Palm Beach sold for $148 million, while in Manhattan, the penthouse of the Aman New York was sold for $135 million in July.
