Maximila Imali, a top Kenyan sprinter, did not lose her eligibility to compete in the Paris Olympics because she cheated. She did not fail a doping test. Instead, she is set to miss this year’s Summer Games because she was born with a rare genetic variant that results in naturally elevated levels of testosterone. And last March, track and field’s global governing body ruled that Ms. Imali’s biology gave her an unfair advantage in all events against other women, effectively barring her from international competition. As a result, Ms. Imali, 27, finds her Olympic dream in peril and her career and her livelihood in limbo.

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) — An unregulated gold mine collapsed late last week in Mali, killing more than 70 people, an official said Wednesday, and a search continued amid fears that the toll could rise. Artisanal miners — small-scale, informal ones — are often accused of ignoring safety measures, especially in remote areas. Political Cartoons View All 253 Images“The state must bring order to this artisanal mining sector to avoid these kinds of accidents in the future,” Berthé said. Artisanal gold mining is estimated to produce around 30 tons of gold a year, and represents 6% of Mali’s annual gold production. The country also has an estimated 2 million gold miners operating in around 300 artisanal mining sites, Pona said.

PARIS (AP) — Dior’s couture show at Paris' Musee Rodin wove an intricate Ottoman tapestry for spring and attracted a tapestry of stars to rival it Monday. A draped skirt embroidered with metallic Ottoman-style threads exemplified Dior’s own haute couture legacy. Above all, it served as a homage to the unsung heroes of haute couture: Dior’s legendary seamstresses. Ducrot’s installation underscored the theme of unique haute couture auras, garments that transcend fashion to reflect the wearer’s individuality. The Shenzhen Component Index, a tech-heavy benchmark, had its worst day in nearly two years, plunging 3.5%. It’s the worst start to a year for Chinese stocks since 2016, when investors were ditching their holdings following a market crash in 2015. The country’s economy grew by 5.2% last year. That beat government projections but is still one of China’s worst economic performances in over three decades. The International Monetary Fund forecasts the country’s economic growth to slow to 4.2% this year.

Naples, Italy CNN —A three-year project to build a children’s playground and recreation area south of the Italian city of Naples has unearthed the ruins of a 2000-year-old clifftop beach house. Experts believe it could have once been the opulent residence of Pliny the Elder, the legendary author, naturalist, and commander of the Roman navy fleet stationed there. Courtesy Comune Di BacoliAs well as acting as a lookout point, Pliny’s beach villa would have also likely been used for leisure. On the beach neighboring the newly-discovered villa walls, a large brick ruin had been dubbed the “talking wall” by local residents as, in their view, it proved the one-time existence of a large residence. “The ruins of the Roman villa will be cleaned and cordoned-off with wooden fences,” said Bacoli’s mayor Josi Gerardo Della Ragione.

China’s second-highest leader said Tuesday that his country’s economy had grown “around 5.2 percent” last year, providing an unusual early glimpse of important economic data a day before its official release. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Premier Li Qiang, the second-highest official in China after Xi Jinping, said that China had beat its target last year of economic growth of about 5 percent. He also insisted that China had managed to expand the economy without using risky or short-term measures, like large spending or credit programs. “In the course of economic development, we have held to avoiding major stimulus, and have not sought short-term growth at the price of accumulating long-term risks,” he said. Mr. Li’s comments were consistent with publicly available estimates of economic growth for last year.

FILTERWORLD: How Algorithms Flattened Culture, by Kyle ChaykaThis dispatch began from an uptown location of Dig (formerly Dig Inn), a small chain of “fast casual” restaurants headquartered in New York City. The walls are white-painted brick, the tables are marble and the cardboard bowls are packed with colorful, healthy foodstuffs. Only the insipid pop music that blares through the speakers discourages lingering. Dig’s food, our “feeds”; their appetizers, our apps — they are all of a piece. Chayka has visited a lot of establishments with a similar aesthetic, which he has dubbed AirSpace, like a Nike sneaker, for its geographically neutral comfort.

The subject of a Jesus movie is technically Jesus. Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” paints a heavily Catholic, heavily bloody image of a suffering hero. “The Jesus Film,” produced for evangelistic purposes, takes its text entirely from the biblical account, attempting to render a literalist version of a savior. “The Book of Clarence” is something entirely different than these and dozens of other renderings. As with that series, “The Book of Clarence” is a highly ambitious attempt at relatability, with an added reverence for the old-school “Ben-Hur”-era Hollywood biblical epics.

MILAN (AP) — Officials have secured the area around one of two 12th Century towers that have become symbolic of the northern city of Bologna, fearing its leaning could lead to collapse. Italy’s civil protection agency has maintained a yellow alert on the site, denoting caution but not imminent danger. The Garisenda, the shorter of two towers built between 1109 and 1119, currently stands 48 meters (157 feet) feet to the Asinelli’s 97 meters (320 feet). Mayor Matteo Lepore noted in a debate earlier this month that the Garisenda tower has leaned since it was built “and has been a concern ever since." Preliminary work on the Garisenda tower will include creating a containment area to prevent any damage to nearby structures or harm to passersby from a “possible collapse,’’ the city said in a statement.

In Kristoffer Borgli’s new A24 film ‘Dream Scenario,’ Nicolas Cage plays Paul Matthews, a man who keeps showing up in strangers’ dreams. Photo: A24Nobody goes to the movies for a message about the internet. So filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli wrapped his in a bizarro premise with plenty of comedy and a surprisingly apt character for lead actor Nicolas Cage. In the new “Dream Scenario,” recently released in theaters by A24, Cage plays an unremarkable guy who starts showing up inexplicably in others’ dreams, even those of far-flung strangers. It brings him a strange and unintentional fame, one that starts to sour as public perception shifts against the man making bedtime cameos in people’s minds.

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Hamas on Friday released 24 hostages who had been held captive in Gaza for weeks, and Israel freed 39 Palestinians from prison in the first stage of a swap under a four-day cease-fire deal. The freed hostages included 13 Israelis, 10 people from Thailand and one from the Philippines, according to Qatar. The freed Israeli hostages included eight women — six of them in their 70s and 80s — and three children. FIRST HOSTAGES FREEDAfter nightfall Friday, a line of ambulances emerged from Gaza through the Rafah Crossing in Egypt, carrying the freed hostages, according to live footage on Egypt’s state-run Al-Qahera TV. Israel said the four-day truce can be extended an extra day for every additional 10 hostages freed.

For a Seasonal Taste of Milan: Candied Chestnuts

But a more accessible route is to purchase a box of marrons glacés — a classic European sweet, also called candied chestnuts — from Giovanni Galli 1911, a longtime confectioner that still produces the seasonal delicacies by hand. Its nondescript white boxes with Galli’s name printed in the original turn-of-the-century typeface appear on smart dining tables here once fall arrives. And agonizingly slow-moving lines form outside the store throughout December, although online sales have helped a bit with that situation. (The season for marrons glacés lasts through Easter.) One wonders what the dentist would think.

Opinion | Grief During a Holiday of Gratitude

Grieving parents like me are told to gird themselves for anniversaries and holidays, for birthdays and religious events. Each holiday centered on family is now barbed. I love a holiday focused on gratitude and gathering, of food and camaraderie. I tend to cook when I’m sad or worried, and I’ve been both, a lot, of late. Living in loss is heavy; it is made all the more so by a world overflowing with grief, and parental pain.

Even in the Golden Age of musical theater, shows so commonly died after intermission that critics came up with a name for the disease. “Second act trouble” presented in many ways: unmoored songs, desperate cutting, illogical crises, hasty workarounds. Yet all those second act symptoms arose from the same underlying condition: first act ambitions. So it’s not really surprising that an enormously ambitious new musical like “Hell’s Kitchen,” the semi-autobiographical jukebox built on the life and catalog of Alicia Keys, disappoints after the mid-show break, tumbling directly into the potholes it spent its first half so smartly avoiding. And since those songs are the show’s selling point, they wind up wagging the story.

Opinion | Where Does Religion Come From?
  + stars: | 2023-11-15 | by ( Ross Douthat | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
But as I read some of the critiques it struck me that the Hirsi Ali path as she describes it is actually unusually legible to atheists, in the sense that it matches well with how a lot of smart secular analysts assume that religions take shape and sustain themselves. In these assumptions, the personal need for religion reflects the fear of death or the desire for cosmic meaning (illustrated by Hirsi Ali’s yearning for “solace”), while the rise of organized religion mostly reflects the societal need for a unifying moral-metaphysical structure, a shared narrative, a glue to bind a complex society together (illustrated by her desire for a religious system to undergird her political worldview). For instance, in Ara Norenzayan’s 2015 book “Big Gods: How Religion Transformed Cooperation and Conflict,” the great world religions are portrayed as technologies of social trust, encouraging pro-social behavior (“Watched people are nice people” is one of Norenzayan’s formulations, with moralistic gods as the ultimate guarantor of good behavior) as societies scale up from hunter-gatherer bands to urbanized states. At a certain point, the social and governmental order becomes sufficiently trustworthy itself that people begin to kick away the ladder of supernatural belief; hence secularization in the developed world. Even if belief in invisible watchers has its social uses, if such beings don’t exist it’s a pretty odd thing that societies the world over have converged on the belief that we share the cosmos with them.

The jingle, last used in the mid-2000s, became an earworm for anyone watching TV during the ’90s when it seemingly blanketed the airwaves nonstop. Chili’s is hoping that nostalgia will draw renewed interest in the restaurant chain that’s in the midst of a turnaround. The new TV ad, featuring Boyz II Men singing a modernized version of the jingle, will also be promoted on social media this month. “It feels natural for us to rerelease the ‘Baby Back Ribs’ jingle and pay homage to Chili’s legendary menu item in a nostalgic way,” the group said in a release. The latest version is the “biggest rerelease of Chili’s iconic earworm yet and doesn’t stray too far from the original version,” the chain said.

CNN —Across the political spectrum, there’s a consensus that social media is dangerous. Director Kristoffer Borgli’s latest film, “Dream Scenario,” half builds on, half parodies those fears and anxieties for its absurdist plot. It also suggests, though, that the dynamics and dangers of online existence aren’t exactly new and aren’t exactly about social media at all. “Dream Scenario” is about how, even before we could see short hip hop dance videos on loop, we’ve always been in each other’s skulls. As “Dream Scenario” suggests, for better and worse, to be human is to dream together.
