Rival United Airlines — second to Delta in net profit margins — is circling. Delta plans to open Delta One lounges in Boston and Los Angeles later this year, and is studying airports where it could open others. Like other airlines, Delta accepted billions in federal aid to weather the pandemic. Luxury air travel and the United States didn't go together for many years — and might not still, if you ask well-heeled globetrotters. And at Delta and other airlines, many of the perks for luxury flyers come through lounges.

Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun will face questions from the Senate Permanent Subcommitee on Investigations on Tuesday over quality control concerns and whistleblower allegations. Boeing's bestselling 737 Max plane has been the source of controversy since two deadly crashes in 2018 and 2019. Following the incident, company whistleblower Sam Salehpour came forward and claimed that the aerospace company put excessive stress on airplane joints, which reduced some of the planes' lifespans. Mohawk alleges that the lost parts were likely installed on airplanes in Boeing's Washington plant where 737 Max models are made. The company announced March that Calhoun will step down from his post as CEO before the end of the year.

Dave Calhoun, CEO of Boeing, leaves a meeting with Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, in Hart Building, on Wednesday, January 24, 2024. Calhoun was meeting with senators about recent safety issues including the grounding of the 737 MAX 9 planes. Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun will testify before a Senate panel on Tuesday about the company's safety and manufacturing crises after a door panel blew out of a nearly new 737 Max 9 jet in January. Last month Boeing pointed to a host of other changes to encourage workers to speak up about problems in its factories after several whistleblowers raised concerns about quality issues and retaliation. Spirit AeroSystems , a major supplier for both Boeing and Airbus, said last week that titanium entered the supply chain with falsified documents.

Delta Air Lines said Monday that it will bring its premium economy service to transcontinental flights in September, its latest attempt to boost sales of higher-priced tickets to customers willing to splurge for more space and perks. Premium economy is a relatively new class of service that major airlines offer on longer, mostly international flights. Delta customers who purchase standard economy tickets will be able to pay for upgrades to premium economy on the transcontinental flights. The seats were sold as extra legroom tickets, which are a rung below premium economy. Some American Airlines ' shorter domestic flights operate a similar model, featuring lie-flat seats but not the Flagship service offered on international flights.

A Spirit Airlines aircraft undergoes operations in preparation for departure at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Austin, Texas, on Feb. 12, 2024. Spirit Airlines CEO Ted Christie said Friday that the budget airline isn't considering a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing and is "encouraged" by its plan after a failed takeover by JetBlue Airways . Earlier this year, a federal judge blocked JetBlue's planned takeover of Spirit on antitrust grounds, raising concerns on Wall Street about the money-losing airline's ability to address its debt. "We are proudly executing to our plan as we've exited the merger agreement with JetBlue and are encouraged by the initial results of our stand-alone plan," Christie said at an annual shareholder meeting on Friday. S&P Global Ratings on Wednesday downgraded Spirit, raising questions about its ability to refinance.

Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun will testify before a Senate panel on June 18 to answer lawmaker questions about whistleblower allegations and quality control at the aircraft maker as it navigates a safety crisis. The hearing comes after a company engineer alleged the assembly of Boeing's 787 Dreamliners put excessive stress on the planes and reduce their lifespans, allegations Boeing called inaccurate. "We are committed to fostering a culture of accountability and transparency while upholding the highest standards of safety and quality." Boeing has been trying to regain its footing in the wake of two deadly crashes of its bestselling 737 Max in 2018 and 2019. Calhoun in March said he would step down by year's end, part of a broad executive shake-up at the plane maker.

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom offered flight attendants immediate 17% wage increases on Wednesday as contract talks continue without a deal, bringing the prospect of a strike closer. The airline and the Association of Professional Flight Attendants have struggled to reach a new contract agreement, differing on major issues, such as pay. Flight attendants haven't received contract raises since before the pandemic. "This means we've offered increased pay for all flight attendants and are not asking your union for anything in return. Boeing 737 Max 8 fuselages manufactured by Spirit Aerosystems in Wichita, Kansas are transported on a BSNF train heading west over the Bozeman Pass March 12, 2019 in Bozeman, Montana. The FAA ordered the report following a near-catastrophic blowout of an airplane door panel on a new 737 Max 9 earlier this year. The FAA also barred Boeing from increasing 737 Max production until the agency was satisfied with Boeing's quality control improvements. The crisis has again tarnished Boeing's reputation, opened it to more federal scrutiny and forced it to slow 737 Max output. Boeing Chief Financial Officer Brian West last week said the company expects to burn cash this year, instead of generating cash.

American Airlines planes sit at the gate at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in Los Angeles, California, on July 26, 2023. Isom said American is weighing changes to a plan Raja led to drive direct bookings at the airline in lieu of third-party sites and travel agencies, a strategy that included gutting the airline's sales department. The changes angered some travel agencies who weren't able to access some of the carrier's fares as before, making it harder for some agencies to sell tickets on American flights. Raja said last month that the airline's corporate booking growth was coming in behind big rivals Delta and United . American in February said it would limit some travel agency bookings from being eligible to earn AAdvantage frequent flyer miles.

A month ago, West forecast Boeing would generate free cash flow "in the low single-digit billions." The company's aircraft deliveries in the first quarter fell to the lowest level since the pandemic. Other problems have also sprung up, including a pause on deliveries of 737 Max planes to China to review batteries for the cockpit voice recorder. Parts shortages have also slowed deliveries of 787 Dreamliners, Boeing has said. American Airlines last month said it would cut some international flights because of delays of the wide-body jets.

The 1986 Air Carrier Access Act requires airlines to provide a wheelchair to passengers with disabilities at the airport. JetBlue Airways said Wednesday that it is seeking U.S. Department of Transportation approval to pair up with British Airways so the airlines could each expand their networks. The code-sharing agreement includes 75 destinations in the United States — 39 from New York and 36 from Boston — and 17 cities in Europe. Airlines frequently turn to code-sharing agreements, which allow carries to sell seats on airline partner's flights, to grow in regions outside their network. American Airlines also has a more than decade-old joint venture with British Airways across the Atlantic that is more involved than a code-sharing agreement. JetBlue's request for an agreement with British Airways comes a year after a federal judge struck down JetBlue's partnership with American in the U.S Northeast, which sought to allow the carriers to coordinate schedules and routes.

"Consumers continue to be even more discriminating with every dollar that they spend as they faced elevated prices in their day-to-day spending," McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski said on the company's conference call in late April. Paul Weaver | SOPA Images | Getty ImagesFor more than two years, consumers have dealt with sharply rising prices. But that doesn't mean the actual prices seen on grocery store shelves or restaurant menus will fall, and shoppers are feeling that pinch. While some CEOs have said that consumers are growing more cautious, others — like those in the airline industry — have celebrated strong and persistent spending. Corporate misfires can also lead to disappointing sales, even if their shoppers aren't necessarily pulling back on their spending.

Frontier Airlines said it will stop charging customers a fee to change their flights, taking a page from larger competitors as the Biden administration issues stricter rules targeting so-called "junk fees." Frontier currently charges up to $99 to change flights if the change is made within a week of the trip, according to the airline's website. Larger rivals Delta , American and United scrapped change fees during the Covid-19 pandemic for travelers who were booked in standard economy class and above. "The truth is the big four all have no change fees on the majority of their products, so we were not as desirable," Biffle said. He said change fees were a "top complaint" of travelers.
