In a hearing in New York on Tuesday, lawyers for FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried expressed concerns over their client's living conditions at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center, where he's being housed for alleged witness tampering. U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who is presiding over the criminal trial, had told a jail to provide these prescribed medications to Bankman-Fried. Judge Netburn said the defense would have to make trial prep requests through Judge Kaplan. Judge Netburn said she would address concerns over Bankman-Fried's living conditions directly with the U.S. Justice Department's Bureau of Prisons, which runs the jail. [1/2] Monrovia NSU CHALLENGER bulk carrier transits the expanded canal through Cocoli Locks at the Panama Canal, on the outskirts of Panama City, Panama April 19, 2023. The Panama Canal Authority has reduced maximum ship weights and daily ship crossings in a bid to conserve water. Container ships are the most common users of the Panama Canal and transport more than 40% of consumer goods traded between Northeast Asia and the U.S. East Coast. Some shipping executives are bracing for more reductions later this year, noting that in 2020 a less severe drought prompted canal operators to reduce crossings to 27 per day. "The Panama Canal is just the latest example."

FTX Founder Sam Bankman-Fried leaves from Manhattan Federal Court after court appearance in New York, on June 15, 2023. Sam Bankman-Fried's legal team is asking a U.S. district court judge to grant the former FTX CEO "uninterrupted access" to his daily prescribed medication while he is in jail. "And for the past three years, Mr. Bankman-Fried has been prescribed Adderall 10mg tablets, 3-4x/day for the treatment of ADHD." On Friday, Judge Kaplan sided with a request by federal prosecutors to revoke Bankman-Fried's bail over alleged witness tampering. For nearly a year, there's been a nationwide shortage of Adderall, the popular stimulant used to treat ADHD.

How to Save for a House
  + stars: | 2023-08-09 | by ( Michele Lerner | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +10 min
By Michele LernerThe need to save looms large in the home buying process. 5 strategies to save for a houseZillow estimates that it would currently take the typical household saving 5% of their income close to nine years to save a 10% down payment on a typical house. For example, if you’re aiming for $50,000 down on a $500,000 home in three years, you’ll need to save nearly $1,400 a month. That means the fastest way to save is often to cut costs on the place you live. However, he says you should at least save the minimum to earn any 401(k) matching contributions your employer offers and have a plan to increase your contributions after you buy a house.

This year, it’s largely been a different story, with bond yields rising on better-than-expected economic data. The S&P 500 (.SPX) has rallied over 16% from its March lows, despite a roughly 50 basis point increase in the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note over that time. That dynamic has changed in recent days, however, as Treasury yields have approached last year’s high while the S&P 500 has fallen 2% from its July peak. The bank’s analysts called rising yields "an underpriced risk" for the equity market. The S&P 500 fell 2.3% last week, its biggest weekly drop since March.

Investors are also closely watching the path of Treasury yields, which rattled equity markets in recent days by rising to fresh year highs. The S&P 500 fell 2.27% this week, its biggest weekly decline since March 10. Janasiewicz of Natixis said a stronger-than-expected consumer price reading next week could spark a decline of up to 5% in the S&P 500. A stronger-than-expected inflation number next week could also boost Treasury yields further. Rising yields on Treasuries, viewed as among the world's safest investments because they are backed by the U.S. government, can dull the allure of stocks.

But I’ve been writing about real estate for more than three decades now, so I’ve benefited from interviewing hundreds of lenders. Along the way, I learned that technically you can get a loan term as short as five years and as long as 40. Back then, average mortgage rates were under 4%, well below what we’d been paying since buying our current home eight-years earlier. Plus, the 20-year refinance will ultimately save us over $100,000 in interest compared with a 30-year refinance (before factoring in our extra payments). Don’t let anyone talk you into a “standard” loan term until you’ve compared all your options.

The downgrade follows a debt ceiling agreement in June that came after months of political brinkmanship and ultimately lifted the government's $31.4 trillion debt ceiling. Unless they think that fiscal trajectory suggests risk of a default, which I don't think they say, I don't understand the reason for this." “So I don't think the reaction, it should surprise anyone in the markets because we've been through this before. U.S. Capitol police stand outside the Capitol building as the Senate votes on debt ceiling legislation to avoid a historic default at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S., June 1, 2023. Fitch downgraded the United States to AA+ from AAA, citing fiscal deterioration over the next three years and repeated down-the-wire debt ceiling negotiations that threaten the government’s ability to pay its bills. With the downgrade it becomes the second major rating agency after Standard & Poor’s to strip the United States of its triple-A rating. Investors use credit ratings to assess the risk profile of companies and governments when they raise financing in the debt capital markets. Other analysts had pointed to the risk that another downgrade by a major rating agency could affect investment portfolios that hold top-rated securities.

That’s a question that swirls through Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” a live-action, you-go-girl fantasia about the world’s most famous doll. The movie opens with a prelude that parodies the “dawn of man” sequence in “2001: A Space Odyssey” (with girls, not ape-men), and then shifts to Barbie Land, a kaleidoscopic wonderland. There, Gerwig sets the scene and tone with Barbie (Margot Robbie) — who calls herself stereotypical Barbie — soon floating out of her Dreamhouse, as if she were being lifted by a giant invisible hand. Written by Gerwig and her partner, Noah Baumbach, the movie introduces Barbie on yet another perfect day in Barbie Land, in which dolls played by humans exist in what resembles a toyland gated community. There, framed by a painted mountain range, Barbie and a diverse group of other Barbies rule, living in homes with few exterior walls.

I have a friend who says her favorite way to read poetry is in quotation, as isolated lines in paragraphs of prose, such as in this column. You can’t have a personal, favorite part, the way I have a favorite part of “Prufrock” (which changes over time). Some of what’s in “Little Poems” does have a one-and-done feel. Short poems can be facile because they are short — they’re not wasting much of your time, so get over it. It’s unsatisfying in the way of all short unsatisfying poems; the end of any poem is a reward, but bad short poems satisfy too soon.

Neuroscientists explain how they keep healthy brains with regular exercise, enough sleep, and more. Keeping your brain healthy is important for delaying neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's. But there's a lot more to keeping the brain healthy and the science behind it. Try new thingsExposing yourself to new people, places, and challenges can keep your mind sharp, improve brain plasticity and strengthen your brain, Shepherd said. Mr. Adams, who is not the first New York politician to lose it with a voter, is up for re-election in 2025. “You have a government that is walled off from the concerns of the people,” Susan Lerner, the executive director of the good government group Common Cause New York, told me. Increasing turnout in primaries may be one of the best ways to get better, more responsive government. One promising bill passed by both legislative chambers in June would shift many local elections to even-numbered years. Some incumbents in New York, unsurprisingly, seem to enjoy things just as they are, and have opposed the shift to even years.
