The David Kordansky Gallery has mounted a wonderful wormhole of an exhibition, “Doyle Lane: Weed Pots.” Its point of access is the small unassuming “weed pot,” a frequent accent in modern California interiors starting in the late 1950s. From this seemingly modest beginning, Lane (1923-2002), who was African American, created a dazzling universe of color, shape, texture and proportion. He also made ceramic tile, pendant jewelry, paintings and murals, but the “weed pot" is his signature. Kordansky’s generous display of 100 pots is Lane’s first solo show in New York. Lane didn’t invent the “weed pot,” but as this exhibition proves, he perfected it.

CNN —Authorities are investigating the death of a ground worker at San Antonio International Airport who was “ingested into” a plane’s engine Friday. “On Friday, June 23, Delta Flight 1111 had arrived at San Antonio International Airport from Los Angeles and was taxiing to the gate on one engine when a worker was ingested into that engine at about 10:25 p.m.,” the National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement to CNN Sunday evening. Seoul/ Hong Kong CNN —A 19-year-old Korean man tried to open a plane door mid-flight after complaining that he felt “pressure” on his chest, but luckily, the cabin crew stopped him. The door stayed closed and the plane was left undamaged, and none of the 180 passengers on board were harmed in the incident, the airline added. The passenger was handed over to police at Seoul’s Incheon Airport at 7:30 a.m. local after the plane landed on Monday, June 19. Police brought the man for questioning and he has so far not provided a motive for his actions, Incheon Airport Police told CNN. While the passenger’s attempt was foiled this time, the incident comes barely a month since someone actually opened a plane door on a Korean carrier.

CNN —An Air India flight from India to San Francisco was diverted due to a technical issue with one of the plane’s engines and has landed safely in Russia’s Magadan airport, in the country’s far east, according to a statement from the carrier. The airline will operate an alternate flight carrying everyone from Magadan to San Francisco on Wednesday. “Air India will operate an alternate aircraft from Magadan to San Francisco on June 7, 2023 carrying all passengers and crew of AI173 who are presently accommodated in local hotels in Magadan,” an Air India spokesperson said in a statement. Russia has banned numerous western countries from operating in its airspace, though some carriers like Air India continue to fly over Russia. CNN —China’s first large homegrown passenger jet made its inaugural commercial flight on Sunday, flying from Shanghai to Beijing, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported. Flying as China Eastern Airlines flight MU9191, the new narrow-body C919 plane left Shanghai at 10:32 a.m. local time. With a range of up to 5,555 kilometers (3,452 miles), the C919 will take on the world’s two major aircraft manufacturers, Airbus and Boeing. It will be a direct competitor to their A320 and B737 narrowbody jets, most commonly used for domestic and regional international flights. Many of the plane’s major elements such as the nose, fuselage, outer wing, vertical stabilizer and horizontal stabilizer were designed by COMAC.

CNN —As the Colombian military frantically searches for four children missing after a jungle plane crash over two weeks ago, new details are emerging about the plane’s history – and local concerns over the safety of air travel in that part of the Amazon. The report states that the plane was built in 1982 and, prior to the 2021 crash, had accumulated over 10 thousand flight hours. The flight, slated for late May, will carry two pilots and a crew of four Virgin Galactic employees, the company announced Monday. If all goes well, Virgin Galactic expects to begin commercial services out of its spaceport in New Mexico in late June. At the time Virgin Galactic went public in 2019, it had also been touting plans to start commercial service in 2020. They include two pilots — CJ Sturckow and Mike Masucci — as well as four Virgin Galactic employees who will ride in the passenger cabin. Virgin Orbit, a sister company to Virgin Galactic that is focused on launching satellites to space on a small rocket, filed for bankruptcy in April.

CNN —Tom Cruise continues to outdo himself. The “Top Gun: Maverick” actor won an award for best performance in a movie for his role in the 2022 film at the MTV Movie & TV Awards on Sunday, and made his acceptance speech in a pre-recorded video that showed him piloting a plane. With the golden popcorn statuette strapped into the plane’s passenger seat, Cruise thanked viewers for voting for him and said “I love you, I love entertaining you.”To be totally clear, Cruise indeed was piloting the plane himself, a Paramount representative confirmed to CNN on Sunday. She added that the plane Cruise was flying was his, and the same P-51 Mustang that he flew in “Top Gun: Maverick.”Cruise is known for doing his own stunts, and even thanked moviegoers for supporting the blockbuster sequel in a video posted to his verified Instagram last year that showed the actor free-falling from a plane. All in all, Cruise piloting a plane to accept an award gives new meaning to “Top Gun: Maverick” character Rooster (Miles Teller) saying in the film, “It’s not the plane, it’s the pilot.”
