For investors looking to weed out climate laggards from portfolios, these are vital questions but existing guidelines on emissions reporting and new rules due to come in for the United States and Europe are unlikely to provide hard answers. The United States is on track to announce similar rules this year and the corporate standard, first launched in 2001 and revised in 2004, is also embedded in other international emissions reporting standards. Nonetheless, many investors scrutinise carbon emissions data to gauge how polluting a company is, how it compares with rivals and how this might affect its bottom line and share price. Another area of investor concern is how companies account for their own energy use, or Scope 2 emissions. The GHGP allows companies to buy green energy to offset their emissions, using contractual instruments such as renewable energy certificates, and reflect this in their reporting.

Analysts point to receding recession concerns and the prospect of a less aggressive policy stance from the U.S. Federal Reserve as factors fuelling hopes for a broader market rally. The second quarter earnings season has started positively for cyclical sectors, with over a quarter of the global companies announcing their results so far, Refinitiv Eikon data showed. "The upcoming earnings season has the potential to broaden the rally for sure. However, there are plenty of laggards especially in cyclical sectors such as financials and consumer discretionary, which are available at attractive valuations, analysts say. Over the past month, the communication services, mining and financial sectors have all posted about 5% gains, outpacing the tech sector's modest 2% rise.

While that's driven rallies in risk assets such as stocks, raw materials prices and some commodity currencies have been slower to respond. Reuters GraphicsThe bullish view on commodity currencies gained traction in recent days after leaders in China - the world’s leading commodity consumer - on Monday pledged to step up policy support for the economy. Prices for oil, copper and other raw materials rose on the news, while commodity currencies such as the Australian and New Zealand dollars edged up. Some other commodity currencies have seen similar declines, with the New Zealand dollar down 2% and the South African rand down 3%. Commodity currencies are far from the only way to play further dollar weakness.

1 when it comes to selling cloud-based AI services. The concept of AI has been around longer than Microsoft, and Microsoft has been running AI models for other companies for several years. That's the reason Microsoft has disclosed how much of the expected Azure cloud growth will come from AI for the past two quarters, Nadella said. That could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars in new Azure AI revenue. "There are two parts to even the AI," Nadella said.

China's Politburo meeting this week could see more stimulus announced, though investors have so far been underwhelmed by Beijing's actions. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq futures were little changed ahead of a wave of earnings this week. The U.S. dollar eased a touch to 141.37 yen , having jumped 1.3% on Friday following the report on the BOJ. The rise in the dollar pulled gold back to $1,961 an ounce and away from last week's peak of $1,987. Oil prices ran into profit-taking early on Monday having climbed for four straight weeks amid tightening supplies.

Warren Buffett flaunts his green investment thumb

NEW YORK, July 17 (Reuters Breakingviews) - How does Warren Buffett allocate capital? Buffett noted a few years ago how electric utilities need a “massive makeover” involving costs that would chew up BHE’s earnings for decades. Natural gas will also become increasingly important as a backup fuel. Unlike most utilities, BHE doesn’t have to pay a dividend – and neither does Berkshire, because of the faith investors have in the $750 billion company. This frees up capital, giving Buffett an edge where capex and acquisitions are concerned.

Big Tech stocks led US stock gains in the first half of 2023, fueled by an explosion of interest in AI. The stock-market rally will fade over the second half of 2023, according to UBS. Equities have started the year on a tear, with tech stocks posting their best first half since 1983. "Fears of higher rates, a few disappointing economic numbers, or a shift in equity market sentiment could quickly unravel optimism about US growth resilience and its underpinnings," they added. Even the AI boom – which has helped Big Tech stocks including Nvidia, Tesla, and Meta Platforms rack up triple-digit gains – could peter out soon, Haefele's team said. That has hurt shares of energy companies: after soaring in 2022, the S&P 500 energy sector (.SPNY) has lost nearly 10% this year, making it the index’s worst performing sector. Most investors believe central bank interest rate hikes to fight inflation should keep a lid on global growth for the time being. Yet some are positioning for a rebound in energy shares, drawn by attractive valuations and signs the U.S. will continue to stave off an economic downturn. Stan Majcher, a portfolio manager at Hotchkis & Wiley, is among those counting on oil prices rebounding due to tight supply. “If you don’t get it, the path of least resistance is for oil prices to move much higher," he said.

StoneX's Kathryn Rooney Vera believes that investors are prematurely optimistic about rate cuts. But according to StoneX's Kathryn Rooney Vera, investors may be getting a little too far ahead of themselves. In fact, Rooney Vera believes that the US's economy, labor market, and consumer activity are currently too robust to even consider easier monetary policy. Rooney Vera also believes that the central bank is unlikely to cut rates in a knee-jerk reaction as soon as unemployment begins to rise.
