Brett Hankison was charged with violating the civil rights of Breonna Taylor, her boyfriend and her neighbors. Photo: Timothy D. Easley/Associated PressA federal jury failed to reach a verdict on civil-rights charges against a former Louisville, Ky., police officer involved in the 2020 botched raid that killed Breonna Taylor and fueled nationwide protests against racial injustice and policing. U.S. District Judge Rebecca Grady Jennings declared a mistrial in the case Thursday after the jury said it couldn’t reach a consensus following days of deliberation, according to the Justice Department. Brett Hankison , the former officer, was charged with violating the civil rights of Taylor, her boyfriend and her neighbors when prosecutors said he blindly fired 10 shots into her home. The federal charges carry a maximum penalty of life in prison.

The prosecution of Brett Hankison, the former police detective who fired 10 bullets through Breonna Taylor’s apartment during a fatal 2020 raid in Louisville, Ky., ended in a mistrial on Thursday after the jury said it could not reach a unanimous verdict on federal civil rights charges. It was the second time that Mr. Hankison had gone to trial on charges related to the case and avoided a conviction. The Justice Department charged Mr. Hankison last year after a jury found him not guilty of state charges of endangering Ms. Taylor’s neighbors by firing several times through a covered window and a sliding-glass door during a nighttime police raid. Two other Louisville police officers, both of whom were white, shot Ms. Taylor, a Black 26-year-old emergency room technician whose death led to massive protests against racism and police violence in Louisville and elsewhere. Mr. Hankison, who is also white, did not strike anyone with his gunfire, but some of his bullets entered a neighboring apartment where a pregnant woman, her boyfriend and her 5-year-old son were sleeping.

But few outsiders are confident that the off-year wins will necessarily lead to Biden’s reelection or broader Democratic success next year. And Ohio Democrats don't expect Biden to compete in the state next year. To Biden aides, the results validated the strategy of sharpening the contrast with “MAGA Republicans” that helped Democrats outperform expectations in 2022. At the Chicago fundraiser, Biden noted that Beshear won reelection while “running on all the programs that were Biden initiatives.”Beshear kept some distance from Biden the day after he won. House Republicans on Wednesday issued subpoenas to Hunter and James Biden — President Joe Biden's son and brother, respectively — as well as a Biden family associate, Rob Walker, in an escalation of Republicans' impeachment inquiry into the president. A representative and attorney for Hunter Biden and James Biden did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The subpoenas and interview requests come a day after the special counsel overseeing the probe into Hunter Biden testified before the House Judiciary Committee behind closed doors. The panel further alleges that the Biden family, their business associates and their companies received more than $24 million from foreign nations over approximately five years. "These records reveal how the Bidens sold Joe Biden around to the world to benefit the Biden family, including Joe Biden himself, to the detriment of U.S. interests," Comer said in the statement.

INEZ, Ky. (AP) — Crews were working Wednesday to rescue two men trapped after the collapse of a more than 10-story Kentucky coal preparation plant being readied for demolition, officials said. Andy Beshear said he had declared a state of emergency in the county — mobilizing state resources to help with the rescue. The plant hasn’t been in use for several years and the men were salvaging material from the building when it collapsed, Kirk said. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) was asked on CBS News on Sunday morning whether the U.S. needed to impose limits on Israel's use of U.S. weaponry in Gaza, which some critics of Israel's prosecution of the war have said are necessary to prevent civilian casualties. "Israel is our strongest ally in the world," he said. "We trust them, and we have a very tight relationship with them both on the intelligence side and the military side. So I don't think the kind of oversight we're talking about for Ukraine, for example, would be necessary for Israel."
