CNN —CNN’s presidential debate will feel like something new for most Americans, but it is actually a return to the roots of presidential debates. J. David Ake/AFP/Getty Images Monica Moorehead, a presidential candidate from the Workers World Party, disrupts a presidential debate in Washington, DC, in 1996. Ultimately, the commission was formed to create a nonpartisan framework for presidential debates – something that has been exported to other countries.

The dollar was steady on Monday as traders looked ahead to fresh clues on the U.S. inflation path that will likely influence interest rates, while talk from Japanese authorities did little to temper the yen's decline back the round number of 160. The yen weakened to 159.94 per dollar in early trade on Monday, its lowest since April 29, when the yen touched a 34-year low of 160.245 leading to Japanese authorities spending some 9.8 trillion yen to support the currency. "The combination of slowing activity, a loosening labor market and slower inflation readings make us increasingly confident that the Fed will begin reducing policy rates in September," Citi said. The Australian dollar was last at $0.6640 and the New Zealand dollar was little changed at $0.6113.

Sure enough, the next day began a historic ascent of Apple stock, an in-your-face rally that many thought made no sense. There's a coalescence of two themes, high speed, accelerated computing and increasingly intelligent AI, and neither works without Nvidia chips. I know that it seems impossible to ponder Nvidia's stock going any higher or passing Apple and Microsoft and staying ahead of it. Ask yourself, does any company match Jensen and Nvidia right now? I say let others be baffled over the Apple versus Microsoft versus Nvidia conundrum.

CNN —Swimmer Lilly King might be aiming for Olympic glory next month, but she got at least one of her rings early after her longtime boyfriend proposed to her following her race at the US Olympic trials. After coming second in the 200m breaststroke final in Indianapolis on Thursday, the double Olympic gold medallist was greeted by boyfriend James Wells on the pool deck. King had already qualified for her third Summer Games by winning the 100m breaststroke final on Monday. After winning gold in the women’s 100m breaststroke at Rio 2016, King was part of the US team to claim gold in the women’s 4x100m medley relay at the same Games. She won the 100m breaststroke world title in world record time a year later at the 2019 World Championships, and helped the US break the 4x100m medley relay world record.

More than $200 billion in assets track the JPMorgan Emerging Market Index in which India will eventually have a weight of 10% by March 2025, suggesting total passive inflows of at least $20 billion over the 10-month period. Since there is no precedent for these debt index-related inflows, bankers' estimates of the timing of flows are based on similar index adjustments in the equity markets. "Obviously, all this is a first and you can't be sure how things will be," the head of trading at a large foreign bank cautioned. In anticipation, large foreign banks could look at building short dollar/rupee positions to help manage inflows when they happen, an FX trader at a foreign bank said. As a senior banker at a large foreign bank said: "all the pipes that have been put in place might not work."

As people get older, their skeletal muscle function declines, according to the study published Tuesday in the journal BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine. It was up to the individuals whether they continued their strength training regimen or went back to their normal exercise level,Resistance training with heavy loads yielded the greatest long-lasting benefit in leg strength, the study showed. Edwin Tan/E+/Getty ImagesWhat counts as resistance training? You can think of resistance training as “exercises that improve strength by making muscles work against a force,” said CNN fitness contributor Dana Santas, a mind-body coach for professional athletes. “For older adults, resistance training is crucial for maintaining muscle mass, bone density, and mobility,” she said.

U.S. crude oil held above $80 per barrel on Tuesday, after starting the week with strong gains. In a note to clients, Bob Yawger, executive director of energy futures at Mizuho Securities, cautioned that the rally in energy prices may largely be speculators covering short positions. Yesterday was the exception that proved the rule," Tamas Varga, an analyst with oil broker PVM, wrote in a note Tuesday. Oil prices had recently declined partly because of a decision by OPEC+ members to start rolling barrels back onto the market in the fourth quarter. Now oil is rising as analysts see the market tightening in the third quarter on expectations that summer fuel demand will draw down inventories.

Opinion: Don’t focus on bracing for a Trump win

The article also cited an organization that is preemptively hiring a new auditor in case Trump were to direct the Internal Revenue Service to target the group during a second term. Trump is telling anyone who will listen what his dark goals are for a second term — from mass deportations to the construction of expansive detention camps for migrants to expanding his presidential power. Even the strategy detailed in Sunday’s New York Times article, which included using the courts to slow down a second-term Trump agenda, is far less likely to be successful this time. One reason for this is that in his first term, Trump was able to confirm more than 200 federal judges including three US Supreme Court justices that he personally appointed. That is why second-term resistance strategies only divert resources from the more pressing imperative at hand: keeping Trump from winning a second term.

On Saturday morning Catherine, Princess of Wales, tiptoed back onto the public stage for the first time since announcing her cancer diagnosis last year in her signature color-coordinated way, joining the rest of the royal family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the traditional finale flyover of King Charles’ birthday parade. She wore a white knee-length Jenny Packham dress with a black-and-white striped belt and a jaunty bow at the neck, topped off with a Phillip Treacy hat, angled just so. As a family unit, on the balcony, it created the image of a tightly controlled, unmistakably harmonic, unified front for a photo op set to go ’round the country. Nothing anxiety-provoking to look at here, the picture seemed to say. Everything’s going to be fine.

Holly Thomas Holly ThomasIt’s not that Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton (or Polin, as the internet insists on calling them) don’t make an arresting couple. The first deliciously familiar moment comes in episode 5, when Eloise Bridgerton offloads to Cressida Cowper, her cynical replacement for her estranged best friend, Penelope, about Penelope. As Eloise finally draws breath, Cressida mentions that she’s “had a shock of my own,” actually. In keeping with Season 3’s somewhat aromantic vibe, its most touching relationship isn’t between Penelope and Colin, but Penelope and her mother. While the series’ attempt to paint Penelope’s Lady Whistledown column as a feminist outpost feels a bit forced, Lady Featherington’s belated appreciation of her daughter’s abilities is far more affecting.

For two years, James Valdez lived in his S.U.V., so it was a relief when he moved into Branford Village, a community of tiny homes, in Los Angeles. And then the flood came. During the first flood in August 2023, the water rose to the steering wheel of his S.U.V. Six months later in February, when water rushed through the complex again, residents were evacuated out of knee-high water to emergency shelters. “You learn to live with it,” said Mr. Valdez, 58, whose 2016 GMC Arcadia somehow survived ruin.

It began, seemingly, with a few innocuous social media posts comparing Mike Faist, co-star of the titillating tennis throuple film “Challengers,” to a dormouse. No, he’s Stuart Little, if Stuart Little was hot. “How ‘hot rodent’ men became Hollywood’s sexiest heartthrobs: Gen Z fans are going wild for actors with unusual features including Barry Keoghan, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Allen White,” read the headline. How do these men — heartthrobs of the moment, even — feel about being categorized as “hot rodents”? “It was clearly not meant as an insult and even though some people would take it as an insult, I mostly felt it was a way of saying that I was cute.”While by no means exhaustive, these responses suggest men feel mostly fine with the “hot rodent” trend.
