GOP presidential candidate Asa Hutchinson, however, called on Trump to drop out of the race. The indictment shows the need for Trump to "end his campaign" said Hutchinson in a press release. While Donald Trump is entitled to the presumption of innocence, the ongoing criminal proceedings will be a major distraction. With the indictment, Trump became the first current or former president in American history to face federal criminal charges. Hutchinson is the first — and so far only — Republican candidate to call for Trump to end his campaign in light of the indictment.

For his rivals, though, the campaign has been frozen in place, with Trump again seizing the spotlight and relegating them to supporting roles. So when word of the indictment broke, DeSantis sprinted to Trump’s corner – along with the loyalists he is ultimately hoping will break for him. Look, look at this.”Among the 2024 field, DeSantis and longshot primary candidate Vivek Ramaswamy emerged overnight as Trump’s most ardent defenders. Ahead of a new ad launch, its first of the 2024 primary, a senior adviser to the group said the new indictment furthered Christie’s political case against Trump. “While Donald Trump is entitled to the presumption of innocence, the ongoing criminal proceedings will be a major distraction,” Hutchinson said.

CNN —Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Wednesday he was “wrong” about former President Donald Trump, whom he twice supported and advised ahead of the 2020 election. Christie told Tapper that 2024 is a different atmosphere from 2016, when Christie first ran against Trump and Trump cruised to the nomination by splitting a crowded field. This time, Christie argued, Trump has a political record to run against. Reacting to a Trump video mocking his weight, Christie said, “It just renewed in my own mind what a child he is.

Former Vice President Mike Pence is runnning for president. Pence was loyal to Trump during most of his presidency, but stood up to him on January 6. By entering the race, Pence will officially challenge former President Donald Trump — a man he publicly stood by throughout his presidency, right up until Trump pressured him to subvert Joe Biden's 2020 election win. DeSantis has criticized Trump's response to the pandemic, though Trump handed the reins of the response to Pence during his tenure. Pence was deeply involved in the Trump administration, with his fingerprints especially visible on healthcare policy and on defending religious groups.

Georgia Republicans are holding their state party convention in early June. Former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence are speaking on different days. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the embattled former president and the yet-to-declare former vice president have already locked down speaking slots for the two-day GOP convention, kicking off June 9. Ron DeSantis, who is hopscotching across Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina this week to build support in those early primary states, declined to comment on whether he would participate in the Georgia GOP meeting. Kemp, who won a second term in November 2022, is skipping the GOP convention altogether.
This week, two candidates officially joined the Republican presidential field: Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina and Gov. All told, the Republican presidential field might end up almost as large and divided as the one in 2016. Which is to say that the 2024 Republican primary is, at this stage, shaping up to be a retread of the one that catapulted Trump to the commanding heights of the American political system. Once again, it is clear that many Republican elites would prefer to have someone other than Trump at the top of the ticket. As of Friday, he is far behind Trump in nearly every major poll of the national Republican primary electorate.

She ran as a Democrat in the 2020 presidential primary but dropped out of the race before any votes had been cast.

CNN —The first Republican primary debate won’t occur until August. But the 2024 presidential primary campaign is well underway. Here are the currently declared Republican presidential candidates, sorted by their place in the most recent CNN poll of the potential GOP primary electorate. But those investigations have been ongoing for years now, and it’s not clear any allegations will hurt his strength among many Republican voters. South Carolina GOP Sen. Tim Scott officially filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Friday to launch his campaign for president. The campaign finance filing is standard procedure for candidates for president. Federal campaign finance law states that within 15 days of referring to yourself as a candidate or spending a major amount of money, you must file your official campaign notice with the FEC. That seems to be what Scott was doing here, designating himself a candidate for president and naming his campaign committee "Tim Scott for America." Others expected to jump in besides Scott include Florida Gov.
Polling has him second to Trump, who has been living in Florida at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach. Donald Trump's permanent residence is in Palm Beach, Florida, at his Mar-a-Lago oceanside estate. New Jersey, therefore, is set to become the new go-to spot for the GOP right around the time that the DeSantis campaign kicks off. On Monday, DeSantis' political team moved to a new office in Tallahassee, NBC News reported. The DeSantis political operation declined to share details of the governor's plans, including formal rollouts and events that may come later.

For many political pundits and politicians, his observations on the war in Ukraine were no exception. Asa Hutchinson, who is challenging Trump for the 2024 nomination, declared that “Trump reminded everyone tonight of his support of Russia and his willingness to sell out Ukraine. The major difference between the Biden administration and Trump on the Ukraine question seems to be not whether talks should happen, but when. Another point Trump gets right is the vast disparity between the US and its European allies on the issue of assistance to Ukraine, even if his grossly exaggerates the amount of US aid. Join us on Twitter and FacebookTo be clear, some of what Trump said at the town hall about Ukraine was incorrect.
DeSantis signed a bill into law that will hide his travel records from public view. DeSantis signed the bill into law unceremoniously on Thursday afternoon, among more than 35 other bills. The security argument was nonsensical to Ben Wilcox, research director and co-founder of the good government organization Integrity Florida, given that the new law will apply to past travel records. "It strains credulity to suggest that hiding travel records could somehow prevent a security breach in the future," Wilcox told Insider. Another elections related bill is headed for DeSantis that will allow him to maintain his seat as governor while running for president.
He would not win the White House. The unanimous jury verdict was vindication for Carroll and offered a symbolic win for other women who have made assault allegations against the president. Many White House hopefuls have exited presidential races for less. Nikki Haley or prospective White House contender, Florida Gov. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy characteristically dodged commenting on the verdict after leaving debt crisis talks at the White House on Tuesday.
Trump was found liable for sexual abuse in a civil trial after a years-long legal battle with E. Jean Carroll. Carroll's trial was the first time Trump has confronted sexual misconduct allegations at trial. "In the general, it would repel swing voters," Roe predicted, though he declined to weigh the potential damage because the election remains 18 months away. When it comes to hitting Trump on the verdict, Roe said 2024 candidate and former Arkansas Gov. Whereas he suspects that others like Trump administration alumni Nikki Haley "still want Trump voters to come their way," so they'll be less inclined to alienate MAGA supporters.
Opinion: Vladimir Putin’s anxious time

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. He imagines a boy sitting “upon the high and giddy mast” of a ship tossed by wind and waves. “Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown,” concludes the king in Shakespeare’s play. Russia said that President Vladimir Putin was the intended target of a foiled Ukrainian drone attack on the Kremlin, an allegation Ukraine denied. The unfortunate monarch who was the last to own the original St. Edward’s Crown, King Charles I, was convicted of treason and beheaded on January 30, 1649.
To recover his political popularity, Donald Trump has "played the victim," Asa Hutchinson said. Hutchinson told NBC News that Trump's followers "believe he's been picked on" amid the investigations he faces. Asa Hutchinson said former President Donald Trump has "played the victim" to win favor in the polls. "Since then, his numbers have gone up because he's played the victim. "I joke, in some ways, that his campaign manager is Alvin Bragg of New York City," Hutchinson said of Trump on Sunday.
Florida lawmakers sent DeSantis a bill that would let him stay governor while running for president. "I don't think we have seen a six-month stretch that has ever been this productive in the history of our state," DeSantis said at the Florida Capitol in Tallahassee on Friday. Should DeSantis be successful in a presidential run, he would follow in the footsteps of Democrat Bill Clinton and Republican George W. Bush. Ron DeSantis speaks during an election night watch party at the Convention Center in Tampa, Florida, on November 8, 2022. During a press conference in Panama City, Florida, on Thursday, DeSantis continued to play coy about his intentions.
It does a ton of business in China, which many GOP voters view as a threat to the US. DeSantis already ran on being anti-Disney — and wonTaryn Fenske, DeSantis' communications director, has described the Disney fight as being "the will of Florida voters." And they might not vote for DeSantis if they think the Disney fight is a killer in a general election. Families often work hard and save for years to take their children to Disney World. If DeSantis can't bring a resolution to the Disney fight, can he handle the job of president?

Trump has backed away from a nationwide law on abortion, saying the issue is best left to states. Asa Hutchinson, and Sen. Tim Scott of Florida — declined to draw a strong contrast with Trump on abortion. That statement quickly upset many on the anti-abortion right. Maggie DeWitte, the director of an Iowa anti-abortion group, had a table that included "free babies." "We need to convince more people that the life position is the right position," said Horman.
He has been slipping in the polls when compared to Trump. Ron DeSantis of Florida brushed off a question Monday about how he's been slipping in 2024 polls against former President Trump. Most recent polling shows Trump bests DeSantis 51% to 38% among GOP primary voters. Though DeSantis has been slipping in the polls, he still is the only candidate who consistently comes in second to Trump in a hypothetical matchup. DeSantis' tactics on Trump may also be a factor in why the governor is slipping in the polls.
