Sports streaming platform FuboTV is suing Disney , Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery over their recently announced joint venture, citing what the company calls "extreme suppression of competition in the U.S. sports-focused streaming market," according to a copy of the lawsuit obtained by CNBC. The joint venture, announced earlier this month, aims to offer viewers a new way to access marquee live sports. "These horizontal competitors are colluding to create a JV that will cause substantial harm to competition and consumers," the complaint reads. Record hot seawater killed more than three-quarters of human-cultivated coral that scientists had placed in the Florida Keys in recent years in an effort to prop up a threatened species that’s highly vulnerable to climate change, researchers discovered. They saw widespread death in both repopulated and wild coral on five Florida Keys reefs. Only 22% of the 1,500 repopulated staghorn coral that they surveyed was still alive, NOAA said. “What happened in 2023 was absolutely devastating,” said retired NOAA coral monitoring chief Mark Eakin, who now is corresponding secretary for the International Coral Reef Society. “Coral restoration is almost certainly doomed to fail under climate change,” Baum said in an email.

Italy's Amalfi Coast will get a new airport

That rule is about to get a little less hard and fast as the Amalfi Coast gets its “own” airport. Technically it’s a reopening rather than a new airport built from scratch. ‘An important moment for the region’The Amalfi Coast is stunningly beautiful -- and it is one of the most overtouristed parts of Italy. GI_ELLE/iStock Editorial/Getty ImagesAnd while the Amalfi Coast has struggled with overtourism with authorities introducing major restrictions on cars to ease congestion, locals seem pleased. Fausto Salsano, owner of Vietri Centro B&B in Vietri sul Mare, the first village on the famous coastline, told CNN: “I’m thrilled that we will have an Amalfi Coast airport.

Finnair starts weighing flying passengers at the gate
  + stars: | 2024-02-08 | by ( Julia Buckley | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
CNN —We all know what it’s like to have our baggage weighed at an airport check-in. But now, some brave airline passengers are consenting to being weighed themselves before boarding the plane. In a trial by European carrier Finnair at its Helsinki Airport hub, volunteer passengers are being weighed at the departure gate in order to allow the airline to refine weight estimates for planes before takeoff. Korean Air conducted its own weighing program in 2023, while Air New Zealand also did a weight survey last year. Finnair is collecting data for both winter and summer seasons, since passengers tend to wear heavier clothing and coats during the cold Finnish winters.

It was hard to keep up with Disney's announcements this quarter:ESPN finally set a launch date for its direct-to-consumer service: August or fall of 2025. It's only logical that the mountain of announcements came this quarter, given activist pressure from Trian and Blackwells Capital.

ESPN will launch its flagship direct-to-consumer service in either August or the fall of 2025, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced during an interview Wednesday with CNBC's Julia Boorstin. The service will include all of ESPN's programming and feature new personalization and integration with ESPN's fantasy platforms and ESPN Bet. The direct-to-consumer service would have been the first time noncable subscribers could access ESPN outside of the traditional cable bundle. ESPN didn't announce a price for the flagship direct-to-consumer service. Disney already has a sports streaming service in ESPN+, which ended the quarter with 25.2 million subscribers, down from 26 million a quarter ago.

Byron Allen, the media mogul offering $14 billion for Paramount Global , told CNBC on Wednesday that he has the money to finance a deal, despite skepticism around his deal-making. Allen told CNBC he hasn't received a response from Paramount to his most recent offer.
