The Supreme Court, in an 8-to-1 decision, ruled today that the government can take guns away from people subject to restraining orders for domestic violence.
In particular, a 2022 ruling from the court vastly expanded Second Amendment rights and created a new test to assess gun laws by looking at historical practices to judge their constitutionality.
Using that test, a federal judge had ruled that it was unconstitutional to take guns from domestic abusers.
But today, Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, said that Second Amendment rights do have limits.
He argued that the government has a better way to disarm dangerous people: by prosecuting them for criminal violence.
