CNN —Conservative Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio is bringing the House back to the floor Tuesday to vote on whether he will succeed ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy and finally end the chamber’s prolonged paralysis amid deep GOP divisions. But it’s not clear whether Jordan can be the one who unifies the fractured House Republican conference, with some lawmakers still opposed. Jordan can now only lose three votes, instead of four, but this is a temporary drop until the Florida congressman returns. “We need to get a speaker tomorrow,” Jordan said Monday after leaving a closed-door GOP conference meeting. Several Republicans – including from districts won by President Joe Biden – declined to say Monday evening whether they would vote for Jordan on the floor.

CNN —It took an explicit commitment from his Israeli counterpart to open Gaza for humanitarian aid for President Joe Biden to agree to make an extraordinary wartime trip to Tel Aviv. He spent Monday deliberating over the trip at the White House with his top national security and intelligence advisers. President Joe Biden is expected to travel to Israel on Wednesday to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – a visit rife with risk and one that projects the depth of America’s commitment to support Israel while underscoring the precarious state of affairs in the Middle East. Biden was originally invited to Egypt over the weekend to participate in a summit to discuss the future of Palestinians. Blinken also announced late Monday that the U.S. reached an agreement with Israel about how to do just that – though details were scarce. The Israel Defense Forces began staging tanks and troops along the Gaza border on Thursday and ordered roughly 1 million residents to evacuate Gaza City on Friday. Over the weekend, Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters exchanged rocket fire that left at least seven people dead, including four members of Hezbollah.

Rep. Jim Jordan received his party’s nomination for speaker on Friday, becoming the second nominee after Majority Leader Steve Scalise abruptly abandoned his bid for the role a day earlier. The Ohio Republican fell more than 60 votes short of the threshold needed to become speaker in a test vote on Friday. Jordan, the House Judiciary Committee chairman, was known for years as an outspoken critic of leadership positioned squarely among the party’s right flank. Still, some moderates, along with Democrats, staunchly oppose a Jordan speakership, making a bipartisan path forward possible. Some have floated a bipartisan effort to empower Rep. Patrick McHenry, who has been serving as speaker pro tempore since McCarthy’s ouster, or even elect the North Carolina Republican as speaker.

A 2020 video showing a group of young men staging a funeral procession to circumvent Jordan’s COVID-19 lockdown rules has been shared to falsely claim that Palestinians are faking funerals amidst the clash between Israel and the Islamist militant group Hamas in October 2023. The caption accompanying a Facebook post carrying the video reads, “And Winner For Best Performance Goes To...Palestinians are seen carrying a small boy's "body" that has fell victim to Israeli airstrikes. The video resurfaced online after Israel launched its fiercest air strikes ever against Gaza in retaliation to Hamas’ surprise ambush of Israel on Oct. 7. Reuters has previously addressed a misleading claim linking the same clip to May 2021 tensions between Israel and Hamas. The video of a group of young men carrying a lifeless body on a stretcher was filmed in Jordan in 2020 and is unrelated to the Hamas-Israel unrest.

CNN —Egypt is facing mounting pressure to act as neighboring Gaza gets pummeled by Israeli airstrikes after last weekend’s brutal assault on Israel by Hamas. That has left the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt as the only viable outlet to get people out of the enclave and supplies into it. But Egypt is uneasy about the prospect of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees crossing into its territory. Tens of thousands of Palestinians took refuge in Gaza, which fell under Egyptian control after the war. Israel captured the territory from Egypt in the 1967 war and began settling Jews there, but it withdrew its troops and settlements in 2005.

As House Republicans struggle to govern, the party suffered another black eye Thursday evening when Majority Leader Steve Scalise abruptly withdrew from the speaker’s race amid hardened opposition from more than a dozen holdouts. A two-state solution was the only option, the monarch told deputies in a speech at the opening of a new parliamentary session. "Our region will never be secure nor stable without achieving just and comprehensive peace on the basis of the two-state solution," the monarch said. The Tamar field, located 15 miles off Israel’s southern coast, meets 70% of Israel’s energy needs for power generation, according to the US energy company. A prolonged shutdown could lead to a drop in Israeli gas exports to its neighbors, Egypt and Jordan, as well as squeeze an already tight global gas market. For now, Chevron (CVX) continues to supply its customers in Israel and the region with gas from the larger Leviathan platform. Goldman Sachs analysts think the Tamar shutdown has “contributed” to the rally in European gas prices. However, all in all, the consequences for the global gas market would be “very limited,” he added, because Israel isn’t a major supplier.

Why Did Hamas Attack Israel?

By Ian ParmeterIn hindsight, the drivers of Hamas’s startlingly well-planned, land-sea-air attack on Israel on Saturday were in plain sight. The operation reflects a pattern of four wars and regular outbreaks of violence between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza since 2005, when Israel withdrew its military posts and forcibly removed 9,000 Israeli settlers from the territory. Each time Hamas has launched rockets at Israel or engaged in similar provocations, it has drawn heavy retaliation from Israel in the form of major bombings on the Gaza Strip. Hamas does not recognize Israel, but has said it would observe a truce if Israel withdrew to its 1967 borders. The significance of a Palestinian entity being able to surprise Israel in the same way would not be lost on Hamas.

Inside the Race for House Speaker

The House speaker election is days away after Kevin McCarthy’s historic ouster that has left the chamber in need of a successor. Two candidates have formally announced their bid for the speakership – House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio. House Republicans are set to hold their own candidate forum behind closed doors on Tuesday before holding an internal election and chamber-wide vote in the following days. “No candidate for Speaker is likely to receive 96 percent of the Republican Conference vote required by this new precedent,” Rep. Tom McClintock of California said in a statement. But the California Republican made clear after the vote to boot him from the role that he wouldn’t run for speaker again.

The ex-president dived into the mayhem following the ouster of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, characteristically seeking to cast himself as kingmaker and to steal the spotlight for himself. Then Trump teased the possibility that he could even step in as speaker himself on an interim basis. But the ex-president’s biggest bombshell was still to come – shortly after midnight, he endorsed Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan for the job. Jordan, who is running against Republican House Majority leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana for the top job, would likely augur a new period of fierce combat with the White House if he wins the speakership. He has opposed the US lifeline of arms and ammunition to Ukraine, and a Republican House majority led by Jordan would likely increase the chances of a government shutdown next month in a showdown over spending with Democrats.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump endorsed Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan’s bid for speaker of the House Friday. The former president is not expected to go to Capitol Hill, a source close to Trump said Thursday night. Republicans are slated to hear from speaker candidates at a forum next Tuesday, setting up the next possible House-wide speaker vote on Wednesday, October 11. Jordan was one of the biggest proponents of its rehabilitation, being one of the main victims of Syria’s drug trade, but it feels now that the regime is either unwilling or unable to clamp down on the trade. He blamed the lack of progress on normalization with Arab nations on the incompetence of Arab politics.
