WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, who last week announced he will retire from the Senate at the end of next year, added to his party's woes on Wednesday when he said he "absolutely" would consider running for president in 2024. In an interview with NBC News, Manchin said: "Every American should consider it if they're in a position to help save the country." Democrats fear that a Manchin presidential run could draw votes away from President Joe Biden and hand former President Donald Trump a victory if he is the Republican nominee for the third presidential election in a row. Manchin told NBC that before deciding whether to mount a run for president he would have to gauge whether there is enough voter support for him. Manchin could also run as an independent, but would have to work fast to get on all 50 state ballots.

In the emotional life of the liberal mediasphere, there was so little space between the release of the New York Times/Siena poll showing President Biden losing to Donald Trump handily across a range of swing states (doom! that one of the striking features of the polling passed with relatively little comment. This was the remarkably strong showing for Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s independent candidacy. When added to the swing-state polls, Kennedy claimed 24 percent of registered voters against 35 percent for Trump and 33 percent for Biden. First, for showing Kennedy drawing close to equally from both likely nominees rather than obviously spoiling the race for one or the other.

Manchin never defended the remark but was criticized by West Virginia Republicans for what his party’s nominee said. By 2022, coal mining employees in West Virginia made up nearly 30% of all coal employees in the country. John Deskins, director of the West Virginia University Bureau of Business and Economic Research, said 75% of West Virginia’s coal jobs were disappearing before coal production dropped because of mechanization. West Virginia Democratic Party Chair Mike Pushkin said Trump never fulfilled his promise. He said the state Democratic Party was branded “anti-jobs and anti-coal” because of environmental policies coming from the national party.

He, along with other non-major-party candidates, has a real chance to affect the outcome of the 2024 election. Perot is a bit of an exception in that independent or third-party candidates usually fade as an election nears. George Wallace topped out at 21% in pre-election polling as a third-party candidate before picking up 14% when the votes were cast. Given all that, it’s no surprise we’re seeing other independent and third-party candidates jumping or potentially jumping into the 2024 race. He was entertaining the idea of running as a third-party candidate earlier this year.

Senator Joe Manchin, a maverick who has often bucked party leadership in the past two years, said on Thursday that he will not seek re-election, hurting Democrats' chance of defending their thin Senate majority in the 2024 election. The move by the 76-year-old lawmaker will make it very difficult for Democrats to defend his West Virginia seat. The party in 2024 is defending Democratic-held seats in West Virginia, Montana and Ohio — all states that Trump carried handily in 2020. They have very few pickup opportunities — their best being Republican-held seats in Texas and Florida, both states Trump won twice. Meanwhile, the White House issued a statement praising Manchin's dedication to the people of West Virginia and his accomplishments in Washington. Biden said the Manchin family "should feel proud of the Senator’s service to West Virginia and to our country. When asked about a prospective Manchin presidential run, Biden's campaign declined to comment.

It's a disruption that Johnson — just two weeks into his job running the House — has said he wants to avoid. “We're running up against the clock on Nov. 17, and we're obviously aware of that,” Johnson said this week, referring to the date that government funding expires. Democrats have made it clear they will not support any funding packages that include policy wins for conservatives. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, who the Democratic leader in the House, said they would not “pay a single, right-wing ransom demand” as part of a funding resolution. Wade. So last year I pushed for a bill that would have codified the 1973 ruling into law. At the time, Democrats controlled the White House and both chambers of Congress. We should have had the votes to pass the bill.

Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.) said Thursday that he won’t run for another term in the U.S. Senate, as he faced a tough re-election bid in a state that has turned more conservative during his tenure. The decision is expected to hurt Democrats’ effort to hold on to the Senate, which they currently control 51-49. West Virginia is seen as one of Republicans’ top pickup opportunities, along with Montana and Ohio, and Manchin was seen as the only Democrat who had a shot at holding on to the seat.

The White House argued the Republican bill would eliminate entirely the domestic manufacturing requirement for government-funded electric vehicle (EV) chargers "thereby harming domestic manufacturing and American jobs." Congress has set aside $7.5 billion to fund electric vehicle charging stations. The White House said the bill to rescind the waiver would also overturn the FHWA decision to extend Buy America rules to EV chargers. As a result, the 1983 Reagan administration decision to exempt manufactured products from Buy America requirements would again apply, meaning EV chargers would not be covered by any Buy America requirements, the White House said. Rubio said the waiver would allow government funds to "go into the hands of Chinese companies to build electric vehicle charging stations."
