His face was pale and gaunt, his legs were wrapped in a blanket, and his eyes never seemed to make contact with the family members huddled around him. But on Tuesday, Jimmy Carter was there, in the front row of a church in Atlanta, just a few feet from the coffin holding Rosalynn Carter, his wife of 77 years. Mr. Carter, 99, was some 164 miles from his home in Plains, Ga., where he had been in hospice care since February. He was brought into the church in a wheelchair, as the crowd of mourners at the memorial service looked on, many of them catching their first glimpse of him in nine months. That he would make such a trek in his condition was, to some, shocking — and, to his family, worrisome.

Opinion: The big question about the Israel-Hamas truce

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. And then it was back to war — a conflict in which some 8.5 million soldiers from all sides would ultimately die. The timing of the Israel-Hamas truce that took effect Friday had nothing to do with a holiday. But there is also the possibility that this truce won’t last much longer than the one in 1914. “The deal arguably strengthens Hamas, allowing it to claim credit, catch its breath and regroup,” wrote Frida Ghitis.

Rising popularity from hedge funds can be a strong signal of outperformance in the near future for stocks, and Goldman Sachs highlighted which names the smart money is loving right now. The Wall Street bank analyzed the holdings of 735 hedge funds with $2.4 trillion of both long and short equity positions at the start of the fourth quarter, based on regulatory filings. Goldman then identified a slew of Russell 1000 stocks with the largest increase in number of hedge fund owners during the quarter. Kenvue , the consumer health business that Johnson & Johnson spun out as an independent company earlier this year, saw 48 hedge funds in total adding it as a holding last quarter, Goldman said. Hedge funds also piled into two merger arbitrage plays — Splunk and Capri Holdings — last quarter.

They spoke to The Associated Press in the months leading up to Rosalynn Carter's death Sunday at age 96. “I do not think there has ever been another sort of leader in the mental health field who has had as much of an impact on mental health care and access to care and how we think about mental health and mental illness as Mrs. Carter,” Cade said. Then, as president, he created a national commission on mental health, which led to the passage of the Mental Health Systems Act of 1980, a major revamping of federal policy that sought to treat people with mental illness in their communities. Those who worked with her over the decades say Carter’s accomplishments were rooted in her compassion and listening skills. Peter Tarnoff, a seasoned diplomat whose work behind the scenes for presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton included establishing a secret channel to Fidel Castro and helping arrange the escape of six U.S. Embassy officials from Iran, an escapade later depicted in the 2012 movie “Argo,” died on Nov. 1 at his home in San Francisco. His wife, Mathea Falco, said the cause of death was complications of Parkinson’s disease. Mr. Tarnoff was part of a cohort of Foreign Service officers who, inspired by the words of President John F. Kennedy, joined the American diplomatic corps in the early 1960s. Many of them cut their teeth on assignment in South Vietnam, and several — among them Mr. Tarnoff, Anthony Lake, Frank Wisner II and Richard Holbrooke — went on to play leading roles in the U.S. foreign policy establishment. But while outsize personalities like Mr. Holbrooke, a frequent contender for secretary of state, and Mr. Lake, a national security adviser under Bill Clinton, became famous, Mr. Tarnoff preferred to wield his influence out of the public eye.

Following the pandemic, the state of mental health in America saw such a great decline that the U.S. Yet, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, who passed away on Sunday at her home in Plains, Georgia at the age of 96, advocated for mental health long before 2020. Early on, Carter recognized the disconnect between individuals with mental health conditions and people without them. She made sure to hold her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, who is now 99 years old, to the same standard. "Twenty-five years ago, we did not dream that people might someday be able actually to recover from mental illnesses," Rosalynn Carter said at a mental health symposium back in 2003.

Rosalynn Carter, who died on Sunday at age 96, was rarely included on any list of best-dressed first ladies. She was not generally called “stylish” or “trendsetting.” She did not play the White House dress-up game, at least as designed by predecessors such as Dolley Madison and Jackie Kennedy. But that does not mean Mrs. Carter did not fully understand the power and political use of clothes, or how to strategically deploy them during her time in Washington. Starting with Mrs. Carter’s declaration, after Jimmy Carter was elected in 1976, that the one item she would be taking with her to the White House from Georgia was her sewing machine. And it set the tone for what came next — which was the greatest dressing scandal of the administration.

“I was in all the states,” Rosalynn Carter told the AP. At The Carter Center, she launched a fellowship for journalists to pursue better coverage of mental health issues. Years later, Rosalynn and Jimmy would quietly support integration — and call for it more vocally at Plains Baptist Church. Ruth Carter later engineered a date between her brother and Rosalynn during one of his trips home from the U.S. But the void would not begin to close until the former president conceived The Carter Center.
