But when Noam, 17, and Alma, 13, were released together on Saturday, “this dream had been shattered by the fact that she was murdered,” said the siblings’ maternal uncle Ahal Besorai. In total, some 1,200 people, most civilians, were slain by Hamas militants across southern Israel that day. It was amid this chaos and terror that Noam and Alma were separated from their parents and taken hostage by Hamas. Noam, Alma and the third woman in their room shared a diary, but the siblings weren’t allowed to bring it with them during their release, said Besorai. Still, he worries about the toll that captivity has taken on them, and the trauma that may linger.

Released Palestinian prisoners arrive to Beitunia, west of Ramallah, with International Red Cross vehicles under the agreement on the four-day humanitarian pause in Ramallah, West Bank on November 24. In videos obtained by CNN, the released prisoners can be seen paraded through the streets, carried on people’s shoulders as crowds wave the Palestinian flag, as well as that of Hamas. What they were imprisoned for: There are few more sensitive issues for Palestinians in the occupied territories than the issue of prisoners held in Israeli jails. Aseel El-Titi, a 23-year-old prisoner released on Friday, told CNN she had only found out that morning she was being released. The number of martyrs in Gaza has become greater than the number of prisoners [in Israeli jails],” El-Titi said.

Since then, more than 12,000 people have died in Gaza since Israel began airstrikes on the enclave, according to Palestinian authorities. The deal will see the release of 50 women and children held captive in Gaza by Hamas, according to Qatar, which mediated negotiations between Israel and the militant group. In return, Israel will grant a “humanitarian pause” in its assault of the enclave and release some Palestinian prisoners. The deal also allows hundreds of trucks carrying aid relief, medical supplies and fuel to enter Gaza, it said, echoing details in Qatar’s statement. More details of the release deal will be sent to families later today, said the Israeli government.

CNN —Tensions are boiling over in Israel as frustrated families of hostages demand answers from the government about the fate of their loved ones and a deal for their release. Wenkert spoke to media on Monday, before he and other relatives met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his war cabinet in Tel Aviv. So far only a handful of families have met with Netanyahu – infuriating hundreds of other relatives of hostages who say the government isn’t doing enough to free them. But many hostage families accuse Ben-Gvir of endangering their loved ones further, arguing that Hamas could be less willing to release hostages if there is suggestion that Israel might execute Palestinian prisoners. Netanyahu has repeatedly expressed two goals of the war – the release of all hostages, and the destruction of Hamas.

CNN —Thirty-one babies were evacuated from Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza on Sunday, in a high-stakes operation that involved multiple international agencies rushing the newborns in ambulances through active fighting, as fears remain for their survival. Al-Shifa, the largest hospital in Gaza, has become a flashpoint in Israel’s war in the besieged enclave. Patients and health staff with whom they spoke were terrified for their safety and health, and pleaded for evacuation,” the statement said. The 31 evacuated babies are all fighting serious infections, said the WHO, citing doctors at the Rafah hospital where they are being treated. Eleven of the babies are in “critical condition,” said the WHO, adding that the babies had fallen ill due to the lack of medical supplies at Al-Shifa Hospital.

CNN —The Israeli military said Tuesday it had thwarted an aerial attack by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, as fears rise across the region that the Israel-Hamas war could widen. They have voiced support for the Palestinians and organized protests in Yemen against Israel’s offensive in Gaza. Gen. Pat Ryder said the missiles were fired by Iranian-backed Houthi forces in Yemen and were launched “potentially toward targets in Israel.” US interceptions of Houthi launches are exceedingly rare. Hezbollah, another powerful Shia militia, and Israel have been engaged in daily skirmishes on the Israel-Lebanon border since the war began. Her case had been rejected by a family court and a higher court before arriving at the Supreme Court. On Monday, the court ruled in her favor, declaring that the provision requiring sterilization was “in violation” of the constitution. Therefore, the provision in question is not necessary and reasonable,” the court said in its ruling. The Supreme Court declined to rule on the other provision requiring transgender individuals to have genital organs “resembling” the opposite sex, saying it was constitutional. The organization also expressed “strong regret” over recent discriminatory incidents against transgender individuals, including widespread “anxiety and fear” over transgender individuals using their bathrooms of choice.

Seoul, South Korea CNN —An 82-year-old man in South Korea had a heart attack after choking on a piece of “live octopus,” or san-nakji, a local delicacy comprised of freshly severed – and still wriggling – tentacles. When first responders arrived on site, the man had a cardiac arrest, and they conducted CPR, the official said. San-nakji refers to a small octopus that is sliced and served raw, often eaten in South Korea’s coastal areas or seafood markets. Though the dish’s name translates to “live octopus,” this is slightly misleading – the octopus is killed before serving, with its tentacles cut into portions. San-nakji is often served with sesame oil, sesame seeds, and sometimes ginger, and has a chewy texture.

Images from Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas, show a mass rush toward the south of the coastal enclave on Friday. Palestinians with their belongings flee to safer areas in Gaza City after Israeli air strikes on October 13, 2023. International observers warn the cutoff will see Gaza civilians die by starvation, disease and lack of medical care for the growing numbers of dying and wounded. At least 1,900 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza from Israeli strikes, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Israel has been massing hundreds of thousands of troops and military equipment at the border while it ramps up its siege of Gaza.

Courtesy Japanese American National MuseumThe detention of Japanese Americans, most of whom were US citizens, was enacted by Franklin Roosevelt via executive order following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Courtesy Japanese American National MuseumThe artworks, some of which are now showing at the Museum of Modern Art in Wakayama, Japan, also serve to preserve disappearing first-hand memories of the camps. Courtesy Japanese American National MuseumYang added that the collection’s diversity reflects the varied experiences of detainees — perspectives that were overlooked by US officials at the time. The detention of Japanese Americans, Emanuel said, was a “shameful” chapter in American history. Courtesy Japanese American National MuseumSome juggled their art with more pressing responsibilities — like Hibi, who single-handedly raised her two children after her husband’s death by working in a garment factory, all while painting and attending art classes.
