Tom Brady shuts down speculation of potential NFL return

CNN —Tom Brady has shut down speculation and rumors of a potential return to football. While speaking to Sports Illustrated, the 45-year-old Brady said on Thursday he’s “certain” he will not play football again. Instead, Brady said he was looking forward to starting his role as a broadcaster for Fox Sports and the “opportunity ahead” with the Las Vegas Raiders. In May, Brady agreed to buy a minority ownership stake in the team. Brady also owns an ownership stake in the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces.

CNN —After spending more than 300 days in Russian custody last year, Brittney Griner made an emotional return to her WNBA home court in the Phoenix Mercury’s 75-69 defeat by the Chicago Sky. The crowd went crazy in applause as she ran onto the court while giving her teammates high fives. “There might have been a little dust in my eye, a little dusty,” Griner told reporters after the game. Carstens joined Griner at the podium after the game, alongside Representative Shelia Jackson Lee, and said it was “emotional” for them both seeing Griner on the court. CNN —Erica Herman, who was a longtime girlfriend of professional golfer Tiger Woods, has accused the 15-time major champion of sexual harassment, according to a court filing by Herman’s attorney in Florida on Friday. Woods is accused of pursuing a sexual relationship with Herman while she worked for him and then forcing her to sign a non-disclosure agreement or she’d be fired from her job, according to the document. The document also alleges a “scheme” used against Herman last year where Woods asked her to pack for a weekend getaway to the Bahamas. In an earlier briefing, Herman cited a statute that says plaintiffs in sexual harassment or assault disputes cannot be compelled to arbitrate those claims. The most recent suit, filed in March, Herman argues the 2017 agreement is not enforceable in part because of a new federal law invalidating arbitration clauses in sexual assault or sexual harassment cases.
CNN —Jordanna Barrett, the wife of Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Shaquil Barrett, spoke out for the first time on Wednesday since the couple’s two-year-old daughter drowned in a swimming pool on Sunday. The child was taken to an area hospital but could not be revived and was pronounced dead shortly after, authorities said. “Thank you all for all the messages, flowers, thoughts and prayers,” Barrett wrote in an Instagram post. I love you forever and always.”Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Buccaneers defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers called the death a “tragedy” and offered support to the Barrett family. He signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019 and was a part of the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl winning team in 2021.
So there was extra attention around this year’s “Mr Irrelevant” – Desjuan Johnson, a defensive lineman out of the University of Toledo drafted by the Los Angeles Rams as the 259th and final pick. “Just be getting picked, final pick, first pick, middle pick, everything [is] unique,” Johnson said, according to ESPN. “My dad was on my mind today,” said Johnson, who was just four years old when his father died, according to his university website. “Just to learn from him, from watching film and now get to sit next to him and just take notes, I’m going to just be like a newborn,” he said. “I feel like I’m going to be like a newborn, trying to take as much in [and trying] to learn under him.”
CNN —When the Toronto Maple Leafs last won a playoff series, George W. Bush was the US President, Lance Armstrong was winning Tour de France titles and The Facebook had just been launched. A lot has happened since 2004, and it has been quite the wait for the Maple Leafs. Before Saturday, the Maple Leafs had lost six straight first-round series, in addition to a qualifying-round loss in 2020 during the NHL bubble. In 2004, the Maple Leafs defeated the Ottawa Senators in seven games to advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Maple Leafs will face the winner of Game 7 between the Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers Sunday.
CNN —The 2-year-old daughter of Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Shaquil Barrett drowned in a swimming pool Sunday at the family’s Florida home, police said. Officers responded to a Beach Park home in Tampa at 9:30 a.m. after a child had fallen into a pool, the Tampa Police Department said. The Buccaneers released a statement in support of Barrett and his family. In 2019, Barrett signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was a part of the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl winning team in 2021.
CNN —Minor league baseball players ratified a historic first-ever collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with Major League Baseball, the Players Association announced on Friday. The deal will be final upon formal ratification by Major League Baseball owners. With the approval, minor league players will have their salaries and working conditions set by the CBA prior to the start of the minor league season. “The agreement represents a giant step forward in treating Minor League Players as the elite professional athletes that they are,” said MLBPA Executive Director Tony Clark in a statement. Every past and present member of the MLBPA is proud today.”The minor league season is scheduled to open on Friday when Triple-A clubs start the regular season.

CNN —University of Southern California quarterback Caleb Williams was named the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner Saturday night. Williams beat out Texas Christian University Horned Frogs quarterback Max Duggan, Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback C.J. The Heisman award caps off a season in which USC ended up just short of the College Football Playoff. Williams is the seventh Trojan to win the award and the first since quarterback Matt Leinart in 2004. Williams suffered a hamstring injury in the Trojans’ loss to the University of Utah in the Pac-12 championship game last week.
Football legend Deion Sanders has been named the new University of Colorado football head coach, the school announced Saturday. The Tigers won the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship earlier Saturday, defeating Southern University 43-24. “There were a number of highly qualified and impressive candidates interested in becoming the next head football coach at Colorado, but none of them had the pedigree, the knowledge and the ability to connect with student-athletes like Deion Sanders,” Colorado athletic director Rick George said in a statement. In October, Colorado fired Karl Dorrell after an 0-5 start and an 8-15 overall record in three years as head coach. Interim head coach Mike Sanford went 1-6 as the Buffaloes finished the season with the worst record in the Pac-12 Conference.
CNN —The College Football Playoff will expand from four to 12 teams starting with the 2024-2025 season. The new format was set to begin in 2026 but the board had tasked the College Football Management Committee to try to implement the expansion earlier, following the 2024 or 2025 season. “We’re delighted to be moving forward,” said Bill Hancock, executive director of the College Football Playoff in a statement. We appreciate the leaders of the six bowl games and the two future national championship game host cities for their cooperation. Everyone realized that this change is in the best interest of college football and pulled together to make it happen.”The national championship game is scheduled to be played in Atlanta in January 2025 and in Miami in January 2026.
CNN —Kyrie Irving, the Brooklyn Nets star who was suspended for at least five games by the team for comments made after sharing a link to an antisemitic movie on social media, has issued another apology as his possible return from suspension nears. Putting some type of threat, or assumed threat, on the Jewish community,” Irving told SNY. Irving reiterated he is not “anti-Jewish” and apologized to the Jewish community. I got a chance to do that with people from the Jewish community, people from the Black community, from the White community,” Irving said. No, I’m not anti-Jewish.’ I’m a person who believes we should all have equal opportunities and that we should all shower each other with love, and that should be at the forefront,” he continued.

The Jaguars cut Lambo in October after the kicker missed all three of his field-goal attempts in the first three weeks of the 2021 season. The Jaguars fired Meyer in December 2021 after 13 games (2-11) in his first NFL coaching season.

CNN —The NBA’s Miami Heat and Miami-Dade County have terminated their relationship with bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX and will search for a new naming rights partner for their arena in downtown Miami. Miami-Dade County and Miami Heat said in a joint statement Friday night that the reports about FTX are “extremely disappointing” and that they will work together to find a new naming rights partner for the arena, which was only renamed as FTX Arena last year. FTX had reportedly inked a reported $135 million, 19-year deal to rename the Miami arena in June 2021. Also, Major League Baseball struck a five-year deal in 2021 to name FTX as its official cryptocurrency exchange. FTX is also the official cryptocurrency exchange partner of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.
CNN —NBA commissioner Adam Silver believes that suspended Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving is not antisemitic following a meeting between the two earlier in the week, the commissioner told the New York Times. Silver, who is Jewish, told the Times that the two had “a direct and candid conversation” at the league’s headquarters in New York. While the NBA did not hand down its own suspension to Irving, Silver said the punishment “got to the right outcome,” acknowledging the criticism the league faced for not suspending Irving sooner. Silver told the audience that Amazon bore some of the responsibility for having the film on its platform. Silver said the Nets along with the league will consult to decide when Irving can return from suspension.
CNN —DC Attorney General Karl Racine announced a lawsuit against embattled Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder, the team and the NFL on Thursday, alleging they colluded to deceive DC residents about an NFL investigation into the team’s toxic workplace culture and allegations of sexual assault. The lawsuit cites the District of Columbia’s Consumer Protection Procedures Act, which gives the Attorney General broad authority to hold individuals or a company accountable for misleading customers. At the same time, Snyder and the team tried to interfere with and obstruct the investigation, the lawsuit states. The Attorney General said the penalties could run into the millions of dollars. Robinson’s agent Ryan Williams tweeted his displeasure with the Commanders’ statement on Wednesday night.

CNN —Deshaun Watson is expected to start for the Cleveland Browns in the first game he is eligible to return from suspension, team general manager Andrew Berry said on Wednesday. Watson is eligible to return on December 4 against his former team, the Houston Texans on the road. The 27-year-old Watson returned to the team’s training facility on October 10 and has been able to participate in limited activities. Berry was extremely complimentary of Jacoby Brissett, who has been starting for the team in place of Watson this season. The Browns next scheduled game is on November 13 against the Dolphins in Miami.
CNN —Following an agonizing loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 1 of the World Series Friday, the Houston Astros bounced back nicely to win 5-2 to even up the series in Game 2 on Saturday. The Astros offense proved yet again to be one of the best in the league, scoring five runs to send the series back to Philadelphia all knotted up at one game apiece. Edmundo Sosa of the Philadelphia Phillies is unable to make a catch in the fourth inning. Astros closer Ryan Pressly came in to close out the game but the Phillies would get another run on an error by Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel. The Astros, in their fourth World Series in six years, won 106 games in the regular season.
CNN —The Portland Thorns defeated the Kansas City Current to win the 2022 National Women’s Soccer League championship on Saturday. The 2-0 victory at the Audi Field in Washington DC gives the Thorns their third championship in team history. Portland had an early lead during Saturday’s game with Thorns striker Sophia Smith scoring the first goal four minutes into the match. The 22-year-old Smith became the youngest regular-season MVP in NWSL history this season. In the second half, Kansas City’s Addisyn Merrick netted an own goal to extend Portland’s lead.
CNN —Vince Dooley, who coached the Georgia Bulldogs to the 1980 national championship and won the most football games in school history, has died at the age of 90, the university announced Friday. Dooley died peacefully at his house surrounded by his family Friday afternoon, the school said. While serving as head coach, Dooley also became the school’s athletic director in 1979 and stayed in the role until 2004. Dooley, who was the 1980 national coach of the year, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994. “It is impossible to quantify what Coach Dooley has meant to the University of Georgia,” Georgia football said in a tweet.
