SEOUL, South Korea — The black boxes from the Jeju Air plane that crashed in South Korea on Sunday are the center of focus as a joint team of U.S. and South Korean investigators work to determine the cause of the deadliest aviation disaster of 2024. South Korea is in a state of political turmoil after a failed attempt to declare martial law last month by President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is awaiting trial after also being impeached. While rescuers quickly recovered the two black boxes, the flight data recorder was damaged and investigators were unable to retrieve its data domestically, the ministry said. The U.S. team in South Korea includes representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board as well as Boeing, the aircraft’s manufacturer, and CFM International, the engine manufacturer. Stella Kim reported from Seoul, South Korea, and Mithil Aggarwal reported from Hong Kong.

Seoul, South Korea CNN —The damaged flight data recorder from the Jeju Air passenger jet that crash-landed in South Korea will be sent to the United States for analysis, Seoul’s transport ministry said Wednesday, as bereaved families began visiting the crash site. Authorities said the black box was damaged in the crash, and concluded that South Korea is not capable of extracting the data, Seoul’s deputy minister of civil aviation Joo Jong-wan told reporters Wednesday. Earlier, Joo said the flight data recorder was missing a connector. Once the device has been sent overseas, the US National Transportation Safety Board will lead the analysis and be joined by South Korean investigators. The process, which is taking place in South Korea, will take about two days.

She made several trips to the continent before eventually meeting the billionaire art dealer Alec Wildenstein on a Kenyan safari in 1977. For Christmas, I was gifted a lunch at Disneyland's elite Club 33, an invite-only club in the park. As a foodie and Disney fan, I had high hopes for Club 33 — and the meal still exceeded expectations. Club 33's theme is not subtle; the numbers are featured prominently in the restaurant's artwork and custom dishware. The park's staff is already known for their commitment to customer service, but Club 33 takes things to another level. Not so at Club 33, where every dish prepared by Chef Gloria Tae, the chef de cuisine, was both beautifully presented and delicious to boot.

Dry January tips: How to take a break from alcohol
  + stars: | 2025-01-01 | by ( Sandee Lamotte | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
CNN —There are lots of great reasons to decide to go “dry” in January and give up alcohol. Set a goal for Dry JanuaryIt helps to be clear about your goal to make it a habit, said Wakeman, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. Additional motivation can come from the health gains you can make from reducing or eliminating alcohol, experts say. It’s important to notice if you — or a loved one — are showing any negative symptoms from cutting back or eliminating alcohol. “The first thing to be mindful of is whether or not you actually have an alcohol use disorder,” Wakeman said.

CNN —Romania and Bulgaria have become full members of the European Union’s border-free Schengen area after scrapping land border controls in the bloc. The expansion was officially introduced at midnight on Wednesday and was marked by celebrations at some of the countries’ border posts. “As of today, there will be no more checks when travelling across land borders between Bulgaria or Romania and any Schengen member country,” it added. The two former Soviet countries partially joined the Schengen area in March when they lifted checks on traveling by air and sea. The scheme has occasionally caused friction among its member states, including over flashpoint issues such as security and migration.

5 reasons to be optimistic about the 2025 economy
  + stars: | 2025-01-01 | by ( Matt Egan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Entering 2025, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the economy as the Trump administration prepares to take power. The Federal Reserve’s war on inflation slowed economic growth, but not by nearly as much as feared. Unlike at this point in 2021 and 2022, forecasters examining the fundamentals of the US economy don’t see the obvious ingredients for a recession. Gasoline’s unprecedented spike above $5 a gallon in mid-2022 posed a clear and present danger to the US economy. A steep market correction, or even a bear market, could damage consumer and business confidence, weighing on the real economy.
