Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will visit Capitol Hill to discuss government reform with Republican congressional leaders Dec. 5, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., announced Wednesday. Johnson said the entrepreneurs will "discuss major reform ideas to achieve regulatory rescissions, administrative reductions, and cost savings" with GOP lawmakers. President-elect Donald Trump has named Musk and Ramaswamy co-chairs of a new outside advisory commission they have dubbed the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Next week's planned meeting is the latest indication that Republican leaders in Congress are taking Musk and Ramaswamy seriously. Yet even the best efforts of Republican leaders in Congress may not be enough to enact many of these ideas.

CNN —A stowaway evaded multiple airport security checkpoints and flew aboard a Delta Airlines flight from New York to Paris Tuesday evening, authorities said – a shocking breach that raised serious alarm over airport security. Passengers weren’t alerted to the stowaway on Delta flight 264 from New York’s JFK International Airport to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport until the plane landed in Paris, said Rob Jackson, who was a passenger on the flight. “Apparently, she hid in a lavatory all the way at the rear of the aircraft when we departed JFK,” Jackson told CNN. She has a Russian passport and will soon be sent back to the United States, according to an airport official in Paris. “Nothing is of greater importance than matters of safety and security,” a Delta spokesperson said in a statement.

President Joe Biden announced Tuesday that Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to a United States-brokered ceasefire in Lebanon. Biden said the U.S., and partners including France, "will make sure this deal is implemented fully." Shortly after the president's announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that his Cabinet had approved the U.S.-brokered deal, 10 ministers to one. Abortion providers, meanwhile, got an influx of funding that enabled them to set up new clinics and extend hours in states where abortion is still legal. Abortion pills are a target for anti-abortion activists, who hope the incoming administration might revoke provisions that allow the medications to be prescribed via telehealth and mailed nationwide. In 1999, Gomperts founded an organization that transported women from places with restrictions to a ship in international waters to obtain abortions. In 2016, the agency enabled mifepristone — one of the two pills used in medication abortions — to be used up to 10 weeks’ gestation instead of seven. By last year, medication abortions accounted for 63% of abortions nationwide, up from 53% in 2020, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

MANILA, the Philippines — Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. vowed Monday to fight back against what he called reckless and troubling threats against him, speaking out after his estranged vice president said he would be assassinated if she herself were killed. “If planning the assassination of the president is that easy, how much more for ordinary citizens?” he said. Sara Duterte told reporters she had yet to hear the president’s statement but she recalled the 1983 assassination of former Senator Benigno Aquino, for which she blamed the Marcos family, without giving proof. “The whole nation fought back when their family killed Benigno Aquino Jr.,” Duterte told reporters. Rodrigo Duterte told the hearings that he was solely responsible for the bloody crackdown and has urged the ICC to “hurry up” with its investigation.

On page 273 of her memoir, Angela Merkel admits she made a mistake. In a 2003 guest essay for The Washington Post, she attacked him for criticizing the impending American invasion of Iraq: “Schröder doesn’t speak for all Germans,” the headline ran. Strangely, the mistake Ms. Merkel acknowledges is not her support for the Iraq war, even though she now thinks the invasion was wrong. After three years away, Ms. Merkel is stepping back onto the world stage. But she isn’t ready to say “sorry.”

CNN —The Maldives, with its sprawling white sand beaches and dazzling coral reefs, is one of the world’s most expensive holiday destinations. Now, though, this Indian Ocean archipelago nation has just increased the price it costs to leave. The departure tax is broken down per passenger based on the class of service they’re using to fly out of the Maldives. Located off the coast of India, the Maldives has a population of about 525,000 across more than 1,000 islands and atolls. Geography makes the Maldives an easy sell for high-end brands, as hotels and resorts can easily have their own private island.

The latest:Trump wants to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico “on ALL products coming into the United States,” he said on Truth Social. He also wants an “additional” 10 percent tariff on imports from China, which Trump blames for the fentanyl crisis, a charge that Beijing has repeatedly disputed. Europe, Japan and South Korea weren’t even mentioned in Trump’s announcement, but stocks have fallen there, too. That suggests rising fears that a new trade war could scramble global supply chains and dent profits. Automakers are some of the hardest hit stocks, with Volkswagen, Stellantis and Nissan, which run manufacturing operations in Mexico, all down.

While leaders of the two nations continue to butt heads, US consumers have paid the price, shelling out more money on goods imported from China. Now Trump is focusing his attention on America’s largest and third-largest trading partners: Mexico and Canada. The 25% tariff Trump floated would have “huge impacts” on gas prices, amounting to an increase between 25 cents to 75 cents per gallon, he said. Said differently, your guac and avocado toast could skyrocket if 25% tariffs are levied on Mexico. Trump selects Jamieson Greer as U.S. trade representative
  + stars: | 2024-11-26 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump tapped attorney Jamieson Greer on Tuesday to serve as the U.S. Trade Representative, a pick that will play an important role in the Republican's agenda to remake the international trading environment through tariffs. Greer, an attorney who has practiced international trade law, served as chief of staff to the USTR Robert Lighthizer during the first Trump administration. Trump said Greer's efforts under Lighthizer helped reverse decades of "disastrous trade policies." His focus, if confirmed by the U.S. Senate, will be to rein in the trade deficit and open up "export markets everywhere," among other things, Trump said. Lutnick will have "direct responsibility" for the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, he said last week.

Located in the country’s second-largest city, Hamhung, the factory has been visited several times by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, with North Korean state media previously touting its mass-production of tactical missiles. And strikes using North Korean missiles have killed at least 28 people and injured 213 this year, the Ukrainian prosecutor general told CNN last week. CNN —With a Hezbollah-Israel ceasefire on the horizon, an 18-year-old United Nations resolution has resurfaced as a blueprint for ending the war. The 60-day cessation of hostilities aims to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701, with the hope that it could form the basis of a lasting truce. Resolution 1701 was adopted to end a 34-day war between Israel and Lebanon in 2006, and had kept relative calm in the area for nearly two decades. Here’s what we know about the resolution and why it is critical to a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. In 2000, the UN established the so-called Blue Line, a “line of withdrawal” for Israeli forces from Lebanon.

Scott Bessent, Trump's pick for Treasury secretary, has called tariffs a "negotiating tool." In June of 2019, Trump threatened tariffs against Mexico if the country didn't alter its immigration system, which it eventually did. Greer is no stranger to the role, having served as chief of staff to the trade representative during Trump’s first term, Robert Lighthizer. Trump has routinely referenced the passage of the USMCA trade agreement – which replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA – as a political victory and a highlight of his presidency. The threat of tariffs could also be used as a negotiation tactic, as Trump has pledged to renegotiate the USMCA.
