At 80, Steve Miller Calls Himself a ‘Late Bloomer’
  + stars: | 2023-11-17 | by ( Alan Paul | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
Steve Miller, 1970s rock icon, strolled out onto an elegant Jazz at Lincoln Center stage last week, sat down on a stool and picked up a custom double-necked acoustic guitar. Smiling widely, he told the sold-out crowd that he was going to start with “a different version” of a song they’d all know. The two versions, almost a half century apart, were instantly connected by the familiar timbre of Miller’s voice. At this show, his seventh annual two-night celebration of the blues, Miller performed only two of his own songs, otherwise concentrating on the music of his blues influences and mentors. “He’s just going to take this music we love into the future,” Miller said backstage in an interview a few days earlier.

Sarepta gave the one-time drug a price tag of $3.2 million, making it the second most-expensive medicine in the world. DMD affects one in 3,500 to 5,000 newborns, mostly boys because of the way it’s inherited, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. The primary goal of the confirmatory trial was improvement on a measure known as the North Star Ambulatory Assessment, a scale of how well kids can stand, walk and perform other movements. The difference wasn’t statistically significant, meaning technically the study failed to meet its main goal. The company said no new safety issues emerged in the trial, which it called EMBARK.

Bridal Fashion Week also included a few debuts from up-and-coming designers, like Zoe Rowyn and Soucy. The program, called the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief Program, or PEPFAR, started in 2003 by President George W. Bush. Congress missed the Sept. 30 deadline to renew funding for PEPFAR before it expired. The policy had not been included as a part of PEPFAR funding until 2017, when the Trump administration expanded the policy to include it as a part of the program. Advocates for PEPFAR contend the program does not directly or indirectly fund abortion services. For some countries, the health benefits of the PEPFAR program go beyond its mission of reducing the spread of AIDS.

Environmental groups slammed Elon Musk's X app, formerly known as Twitter, in a report Wednesday ranking social media platforms on their approach to climate change misinformation. Before Musk bought Twitter last year, the app said it banned advertisements that "contradict the scientific consensus on climate change." In a statement responding to the climate scorecard, YouTube said: "Our climate change policy explicitly prohibits the monetization of content that denies the existence of climate change, as well as ads that promote these claims. Debate or discussions of climate change topics, including around public policy or research, is allowed, but when content crosses the line to climate change denial, we stop showing ads on those videos. In general, our systems also don't recommend or prominently surface content that includes climate change misinformation."

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The grit Baker Mayfield showed Tampa Bay down the stretch of his debut sure outweighed the rough start. Mayfield recovered to throw two touchdown passes without a turnover, and the Buccaneers beat Minnesota 20-17 in the season opener after three first-half turnovers by the Vikings on Sunday. “It wasn’t our prettiest effort by any means, but we finished the right way,” Mayfield said. But after going an NFL-record 11-0 in one-score games during the 2022 regular season, the Vikings ran out of that late-game mojo. The Vikings have less urgency around Jefferson with two seasons left on his rookie contract.
