The government — which owns the Post Office — has described the scandal as one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in British history. The software regularly showed that money — often many thousands of pounds — had gone missing from Post Office accounts. After spending the past two years trying to get inflation under control by raising interest rates, the Fed is inching toward cutting rates soon. Setting interest rates should be about weighing costs and benefits for everyone, not engineering outcomes for a favored constituency. When people (usually those with a vested political interest) try to accuse the Fed of being biased, it erodes confidence. The real reason for the accusationsThe entire conspiracy theory about a political Fed is weak on its face and baseless on its merits. What makes anyone so sure they'll fare better in 2024 with the rate of inflation slowing, interest rates falling, and stocks rising?

Gautam Adani is the richest person in Asia again, according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index's updated figures Friday. The founder and chairman of the Adani Group regained pole position in Asia after dethroning Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, who took the top spot after Hindenburg Research accused the Adani Group of "brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud" over decades. The report eroded investor confidence and wiped out billions in market value for Adani Group companies. The Adani Group has 10 publicly listed companies, including Adani Port which was 2.8% higher on Asia's Friday afternoon trading session. As of Friday, Adani's net worth stood at $97.6 billion and he was the world's 12th richest person, while Ambani's wealth stood at $97 billion and he was in 13th place, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Futures tied to major U.S. equity indexes are split between small gains and losses, while Treasury yields are inching down. Look out for any pushback against the notion, gripping the bond market, that the central bank will soon cut interest rates. November was the best month for the S&P 500 since July last year. They were volatile on Thursday, after Fed Bank of New York President John Williams said he thought it best to keep interest rates high for some time. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index dropped more than 1.2% to close at its lowest in more than a year.

A deal for a temporary cease fire was inching into view in Israel's war against Hamas, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tempered expectations by vowing that the war would continue even if a deal is reached. “We are at war, and we will continue the war,” he said. Israel has vowed to continue the war until it destroys Hamas’ military capabilities and returns all hostages. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose government maintains ties with Hamas officials, said Turkey’s foreign minister and intelligence chief were working with Qatari officials to negotiate releases. Hamas has released four hostages, Israel has rescued one, and the bodies of two were found near Shifa.

NEW YORK (AP) — Jimmy Kimmel is returning as host of the Academy Awards for the second straight year and fourth time overall, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced Wednesday. In the wake of Will Smith's slap of Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars, Kimmel led a cautious ceremony that helped stabilize the Academy Awards after years of turmoil. "I always dreamed of hosting the Oscars exactly four times,” Kimmel said in a statement. They'll be joined by Molly McNearney, executive producer of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and Kimmel's wife, who will return for a second consecutive year to serve as an executive producer for the show. It also serves as a central artery for commuters making their way to and from the San Gabriel Valley, a constellation of cities with more than 1.5 million residents east of Los Angeles. During rush hour (and sometimes any random hour), it is where drivers sit bumper to bumper, restlessly inching forward. The recent fire that shut down a nearly two-mile stretch of the freeway created what would seem to be a disaster for a city already swamped with traffic troubles. And the kicker: It will be weeks before the affected stretch of Interstate 10 can reopen again. Yet for many residents, the repercussions have felt less catastrophic and more like just another Los Angeles annoyance.

"We're going to start seeing two big waves of growth" in Mexican startups, said Eric Perez-Grovas, co-founder of venture capital fund Wollef, in an interview, adding an earlier slowdown in financing activity was starting to reverse. Mexico's startups are looking to recover after a lackluster year, hit by rising inflation and high interest rates, dampened investment prospects. "The economic outlook is really, really positive, inflation is coming down and employment is steady. Nexu, an auto-financing startup, landed a $20-million investment round last month, adding onto $53 million it had previously raised. Nexu's round was oversubscribed and had buy-in from foreign investors, however, showing market appetite is increasing, said Perez-Grovas.

The leaders of Iran and Saudi Arabia, regional rivals who restored diplomatic ties this year, met in Riyadh on Saturday at a summit where they called for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza and unconditional delivery of humanitarian aid to the enclave, which Israeli forces have besieged since the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks. But it was unclear whether the shift would lead to a lasting détente between Saudi Arabia’s Sunni monarchy and Iran’s Shiite government. Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, however, appears to have hastened the warming of ties between Saudi Arabia and Iran, just as delicate diplomacy had been inching Saudi Arabia and Israel toward possible normalization of relations. Iran, which Israel considers its most dangerous foe, is a powerful patron of Hamas. President Ebrahim Raisi of Iran, whose visit to Saudi Arabia was the first by an Iranian president to the kingdom in more than a decade, was greeted at the summit venue by Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Editor’s Note: This is a version of CNN’s Royal News, a weekly dispatch bringing you the inside track on Britain’s royal family. London CNN —There was a moment that fell under the radar while the Prince of Wales was in Singapore this week. There, Prince William and a star-studded cast announced this year’s cohort of winner, but earlier in the week, the heir to the throne achieved his own, quieter, victory. One of the questions we’re often asked is about the real-world return from all the speeches, walkabouts and waving the royal family does. Having this kind of quantifiable impact is at the core of William’s vision for his time as Prince of Wales.

TOKYO—For a quarter-century, Japan tried every trick in the central-banking book to boost prices and jolt its troubled economy back to life. The cure turned out to be pandemic and war. Higher energy and food costs triggered by the Ukraine war, coupled with Covid-era supply-chain snags, are bringing a surprise end to the long, bleak era of Japanification. Businesses are increasing prices significantly, and wages have begun inching up.

The dollar index was hovering around a 6-1/2 week low of 104.84, after falling around 1.4% last week. "You could still see a somewhat weaker dollar in the short-term, but if the (euro-dollar) rally continues it needs to get some fuel from somewhere." JPMorgan analysts say a sustained dollar sell-off would need signs of improvement in the euro zone, China and other regions, which it says are "still tenuous". The latest growth and inflation data from the euro zone and manufacturing surveys from China bear that out. Euro zone recession fears hardened on Monday after a survey showed a downturn in business activity accelerated last month as demand in the services sector weakened further.
