ISER Caribe executive director Stacey Williams dives underwater to clip lines of astroturf-like material where baby sea urchins are growing. The group is working to restore 5 acres of coral reef in Puerto Rico by planting fragments across six reefs and returning long-spined sea urchins to the ecosystem. Then, once the urchins reach young adult size, the researchers place them in a coral reef in need of extra support. Manzello said scientists used to think coral had a longer runway — perhaps until 2040 or 2050 — before conditions became so grim. A look at the underwater lab where ISER Caribe nurtures baby sea urchins.

The annual Florida Python Challenge has slithered to its conclusion, with professionally-categorized python purger Ronald Kiger crowned its victor after removing 20 Burmese pythons from the Florida Everglades. The commission revealed 195 Burmese pythons were successfully removed from the wild during the challenge. The hunt is designed to bring awareness to the invasive threat of the Burmese python species in Florida. These snakes are found primarily in and around the Everglades ecosystem in South Florida, where they prey on birds, mammals and other reptiles. Burmese pythons can spread diseases amongst native animals, affect native snakes and have high mercury levels that are dangerous for human consumption.

CNN —An 11-year-old middle school student in Port Orange, Florida, has been charged with a felony after threatening to commit a mass shooting at a middle school, authorities said Monday. “We just arrested a Creekside Middle School student who made threats to commit a school shooting at Creekside or Silver Sands Middle School,” Volusia County Sheriff Michael Chitwood said in a post on social media announcing the arrest. The history of the US Secret Service

The agency was commissioned within the Treasury Department, and the Secret Service was entirely focused on counterfeit money, a major problem of the day. Threatening presidents was not made a crime until 1917, the same year Congress approved Secret Service protection for the immediate family of a president. The Secret Service remained a part of the Treasury Department until 2003, when a massive government reorganization after the 9/11 terror attacks moved the Secret Service to the Department of Homeland Security. But the Secret Service is still tasked with fighting financial crimes. The entire Secret Service employs nearly 8,000 people for its protective and investigative missions, and it secures thousands of events each year.

A school district in northeastern Florida must return three dozen books related to race and the LGBTQ community to school libraries as part of a settlement reached Thursday with authors, parents and students. The Nassau County School Board removed 36 books last year after the titles were challenged by Citizens Defending Freedom, a conservative advocacy group. The Nassau County School Board did not immediately return a request for comment. The suit was among several that challenged the removal of books by school districts across Florida under a law signed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis that made it easier for community members to challenge books they found to be inappropriate in school libraries.

Ron DeSantis’ administration is once again advising against the mRNA vaccines: this time in the most vulnerable residents. In updated guidance for health care providers released Thursday, the Florida Health Department and state Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo questioned the safety and effectiveness of the mRNA Covid vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, including for older adults and people with underlying health problems. Dr. Paul Offit, a vaccine expert at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said the Florida surgeon general's guidance is unnecessarily alarming people about the Covid vaccines. "The mRNA vaccines are remarkably safe," he added. The CDC currently recommends everyone ages 6 months and older get an updated Covid vaccine this fall from any of the three options.

Former President Donald Trump said he would not sign a federal abortion ban Tuesday night during a presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, saying he did not think it would be needed. “Democrats, Republicans and everybody else, and every legal scholar, wanted it to be brought back into the states,” Trump said. Harris responded by saying women in states that cracked down on abortion after Roe v. Wade was overturned have faced nightmare scenarios. Abortion has been a politically dominant issue since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, and throughout the race, it has been a tricky one for Trump to navigate. I’ve disagreed with that right from the early primaries when I heard about it,” Trump said last month.

Former President Donald Trump said he plans to vote yes on a ballot measure in Florida to legalize marijuana, his clearest stance so far on the issue. He wrote that arrests for marijuana possession of "personal amounts" waste taxpayers' dollars and suggested that the ballot measure would help prevent deaths from fentanyl-laced marijuana. If passed, the ballot measure would permit residents over 21 to possess, buy or consume marijuana recreationally. Ron DeSantis opposes the marijuana ballot measure and most congressional Republicans have in recent years voted against bills to reform U.S. policy on marijuana. Trump last month seemed to signal some support for another ballot measure in Florida: one that would expand abortion access.

Former President Donald Trump repeated his false claim that children are undergoing transition-related surgery during their school day, worsening fears among some conservatives that educators are pushing children to become transgender and aiding transitions without parental awareness. What the hell is wrong with our country?” Trump said Saturday at a campaign rally in Wisconsin, a vital swing state. About half the states ban transition-related surgery for minors, and even in states where such care is still legal, it is rare. The law limits the instruction of sexual orientation and gender identity in school and has been replicated in states across the country. Half of all teachers polled, including 62% of elementary school teachers, said elementary school students should not learn about gender identity in school.

Nationwide, active listings in August were up 36% compared with the same month last year, according to a new report from Realtor.com. The growth in supply is due to the fact that homes are sitting on the market longer. “The widely anticipated Fed rate cut has already ushered in lower mortgage rates, but it seems that some buyers and sellers are waiting for additional declines.”That can be seen in weekly mortgage data. Regionally, active listings rose 46% in the South, 35.7% in the West, 23.8% in the Midwest and 15.1% in the Northeast. Part of that is due to the mix of homes on the market, as more smaller homes are being listed.

New York CNN —For months, former President Donald Trump has been sitting on a social media fortune that he couldn’t touch. As recently as May 9, Trump’s dominant stake of 114.75 million shares of Trump Media was valued at $6.2 billion. Despite the recent selloff, Trump Media is still valued at nearly $4 billion. The biggest chunk – about $1.9 million – was spent by Trump’s campaign and fundraising committees on a Trump-owned company that operates his jet. Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, said that “committees are paying the fair market rate for all venues and services” provided by Trump businesses. The dynamic of candidates shelling out thousands on Trump’s businesses while vying for his endorsement – which can make or break Republican campaigns – is an example of how politics has boosted his businesses’ bottom line. About 150 congressional candidates have reported spending campaign funds at Trump businesses, including some Democrats in the years before his first presidential bid. Walker’s campaign spent a total of nearly $215,000 at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s West Palm Beach golf club and his Las Vegas hotel.

The group most directly affected by restrictions on abortion — women of reproductive age — are broadly against them, new survey results have found. Nearly half of Republican women of reproductive age said abortion should be legal in most or all cases. The report released Wednesday focuses more narrowly on how women of reproductive age view abortion, based on 3,900 responses. KFF’s survey results in Florida suggest that 72% of reproductive-age women there think abortion should be legal, including roughly half of Republican women. New York CNN —A man suing Walt Disney Parks and Resorts for the wrongful death of his wife is facing a new legal hurdle: Disney is trying to get it dismissed and sent to arbitration — because he signed up for Disney+ years earlier. Company lawyers also claim that because Piccolo used the Walt Disney Parks’ website to buy Epcot Center tickets, Disney is shielded from a lawsuit from the estate of Piccolo’s deceased wife, Kanokporn Tangsuan, who died of a reaction to severe food allergies. In October 2023, Kanokporn Tangsuan, her husband Jeffrey Piccolo and Piccolo’s mother dined at Raglan Road Irish Pub in Disney Springs, which is part of the Walt Disney World resort in Florida. Tokyo CNN —Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will not run for a second term as leader of the long-ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) next month following a series of political scandals that have fueled calls for him to resign. The most obvious first step, to show that the LDP will change, is for me to step aside,” he said. Concerns about Japan’s economy, including the weakening of the yen against the US dollar, have also undermined confidence in Kishida’s economic policies. He had previously denied he would step down as party leader despite public criticism and sinking disapproval ratings. His decision to quit comes a month before LDP elections are slated, with the date in September yet to be announced.

CNN —Esteban Wood still remembers the time a 74-year-old Mexican farmer in Homestead, Florida, collapsed on the job from extreme heat. Such outdoor workers include lifeguards, transportation employees, ironworkers, agricultural workers and letter carriers. States like California, Colorado, Minnesota and Washington, have some heat protections for workers but they are not uniform or sweeping. For example, Minnesota’s protections only apply to indoor workers while California’s heat protections include both indoor and outdoor workers. The government must implement wage protections alongside heat protections, said Dr. Kristina Dahl, a principal climate scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists.
