CNN —Head lice have been constant, if unwanted, human companions for as long as our species has been around. Some 20 years ago, David Reed, a coauthor of the new study and a researcher and curator at the Florida Museum of Natural History, found that human head lice are composed of two ancient lineages, with origins predating Homo sapiens. Doing so allowed researchers to detect the hybrid lice and better capture the genetic diversity of head lice. Ascunce said she had hoped the information they gleaned might answer whether Neanderthal head lice are still around today, but the 15 genetic markers, known as “microsatellites,” that they studied in the lice nuclear DNA didn’t reveal that information. “New ongoing studies are being done using whole genome sequences from human lice, so stay tuned for more exciting research on that.”

Low rainfall in places like Mexico, India and Ivory Coast could lead to lighter sacks of candy for trick-or-treaters this Halloween, as disappointing sugar and cocoa harvests have pushed up candy prices. The price of candy is up 7.5 percent from last year and 20 percent from 2021, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That is a steeper climb than inflation overall, and has been driven by a spike in the prices of crucial ingredients like sugar and cocoa, which are the highest they’ve been in global wholesale markets in decades. That’s because of poor harvests stemming from hot, dry weather and the high cost of fertilizer, among other factors. Sugar cane, which is processed into sugar, and cocoa, a key ingredient in chocolate, are especially sensitive to periods of low rainfall in the tropical regions where those crops grow, like parts of Asia, Central America and West Africa.

I think the Republican Party’s collapse into incoherence reflects the fact that much of the modern right is reactionary, not conservative. It’s a coalition obsessed with where we went wrong: the weakness, the political correctness, the liberalism, the trigger warnings, the smug elites. The Silicon Valley cohort Andreessen belongs to has added a bit to this formula. Rather, it’s the pairing of the reactionary’s sodden take on modern society with the futurist’s starry imagining of the bright tomorrow. So call it what it is: reactionary futurism.

Specialty chocolatiers have so far been immune to the elevated cocoa prices. Greg D'Alesandre, who leads chocolate sourcing for specialty brand Dandelion Chocolate, said its prices are protected from industry-wide volatility because the company pays a premium for high-end cocoa suppliers. The median family income for Harvard students is nearly $169,000, or about 2.5 times the U.S. average. Stockpiles of cash donated by Rowan, Ackman and other alumni also should theoretically make such institutions more accessible, but haven’t. Elite universities funnel many graduates to lucrative careers in finance and consulting, and studies have shown that social class often predetermines success. Ideally, Ivory Towers would price education closer to its actual value rather than what people are willing to pay.
