Many Americans believe they need to earn a certain dollar amount to feel rich. But even if they hit that goal or surpass it, they may be disappointed to find out they still don't feel satisfied with their finances, says Charles Chaffin, co-founder of the Financial Psychology Institute and a professor at Iowa State University. "The misconception is that there's an actual number and when people hit that number, they'll suddenly feel wealthy," he tells CNBC Make It. In fact, even millionaires don't always feel well off financially, according to recent data from Northwestern Mutual's 2024 Planning & Progress study. Here's one reason why that happens and what to focus on instead to feel more satisfied with your money, according to Chaffin.

“Intercity bus service is critically important for so many people,” said Chicago Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, who has worked to save the station. “I guess I’d have to take the bus (even if the bus station closes) but I’d much rather have this,” Kay said. Terminals sold to investorsA closure in Chicago would accelerate the crisis in intercity bus service in the United States. Milwaukee and Boston, for example, have municipal intercity bus terminals located next to train stations. Chicago Alderman Ramirez-Rosa said that the ultimate goal should be a public intercity bus terminal.

In observance of Banned Books Week, which started Sunday and runs through Saturday, two new reports were released. Yasmin said she began writing the book in 2019 after thinking about how abortion bans affect teenagers. “So what we’re seeing is this censorship happening before the book is banned because of the draconian ecosystem that we’re living in,” she said. And right now, the presidential campaigns’ dollars are talking about the “blue wall” — and about defining Kamala Harris. But there’s an equal amount of contrast spots, as well as positive ads telling the affirmative case for Harris. Pennsylvania is drawing far and away the most ad spending this month, from both parties. While Pennsylvania drew almost 20% of Democratic presidential ad spending and 11% of Republican spending over this period in 2020, it’s drawing more than a quarter of each party’s spending this year. Meanwhile, a longtime swing state, Iowa, has ceased to be a main battleground — with a resulting drop in ad spending.

Caitlin Clark’s historic rookie season ended Wednesday as the Indiana Fever lost 87-81 to the Connecticut Sun, losing their first-round playoff series 0-2. Her 337 assists in the regular season were not only a rookie record, but also the WNBA record for assists in a season. She became the first rookie to record a triple-double, and she set the record for most 3s by a rookie in a single season, as well. On July 17, Clark recorded 19 assists in a loss to the Dallas Wings, a single-game WNBA record. After her final collegiate game in April, Clark’s professional career began the next month in May.

Instead of cutting anything out, consider focusing on these seven commandments of the Mediterranean lifestyle, Karadsheh recommends. BI broke down the pros, cons, and frequently asked questions about basic income. Universal basic income and guaranteed basic income could fill gaps in the existing US social safety net, experts said. A benefit of basic income is the element of choice, according to Shafeka Hashash, associate director of guaranteed income at the Economic Security Project. Private donors often fully or partially fund basic income programs, lessening the cost burden on local governments. US states with active basic income programs include California, Illinois, Colorado, New York, Georgia, Louisiana, and more.

While it was an asset to Biden in polling against Trump, it appears to be a much bigger advantage for Harris. And in this new NBC poll, Harris’ advantage was just under 20 points. It’s obvious at this point that Trump will win men by close to double digits, ditto with Harris among women. But many voters have seen "Vice President Kamala Harris" as a fresher candidate, including those who previously viewed Trump as a better steward of the economy. That would spell doom for Democrats' Senate majority.

Egg prices spiked by 28.1% in August from 12 months ago, easily the biggest increase out of any food item tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The main culprit for rising egg prices is a familiar one: bird flu. Where egg prices are rising the mostStill, the current BLS average of $3.20 per dozen eggs remains high. Zooming in to focus on just the past year, Datasembly found that egg prices have increased the most in Hawaii (+49%), Minnesota (+44%) and Alabama (+38%). Two reports released Monday provide a mixed but compelling outlook on the wave of book removals and challenges as the annual Banned Books Week begins for schools, stores and libraries nationwide. The ALA attributed the decline in book challenges in the first eight months of 2024, in part, to the work of anti-censorship activists and “success in courts” against laws that restrict book access. “But, you know, the First Amendment protects the rights of minors as well.”While the ALA’s report shows signs of book challenges abating, objections to certain titles still persist. Like the ALA, PEN said a large portion of the books targeted have racial or LGBTQ themes. It is supported by the ALA, PEN, the Authors Guild, the National Book Foundation and more than a dozen other organizations.

Former President Donald Trump on Monday threatened John Deere with a 200% tariff if the agricultural manufacturer moves production to factories in Mexico. John Deere has announced that it plans to shift production of some of its models to Mexico, a move that has resulted in layoffs at facilities in Iowa. Constellation Energy stock is still rising after the power company's landmark announcement last week that it plans to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania. The operational risk to bring the plant back online in 2028 appears manageable, Morgan Stanley told clients in a note on Monday. Renewable energy and natural gas stocks could also indirectly benefit from nuclear deals, according to Morgan Stanley analyst Stephen Byrd. Renewable stocks such as AES Corp. , NextEra Energy and First Solar could get a tailwind for the same reason, according to Morgan Stanley. CEO John Ketchum said the company is looking at restarting the Duane Arnold nuclear plant in Iowa.

Few address child care, for infants or beyond. Since Dobbs, seven states have had ballot initiatives on the topic, with the abortion rights position winning in each state. In November, at least 10 more initiatives aimed at restoring or protecting abortion rights will be in front of voters across the country. But Brahm has also rallied an array of political, faith, academic, medical and advocacy leaders into a coalition called “Building a Post-Roe Future” that calls for more affordable health care and child care, expanded child tax credits, paid parental leave, flexible work hours and enforced pre-natal support. Though paid parental leave has been a big topic of discussion around the country, the only states to enact such measures since Dobbs are those where abortion rights are protected.

A unit of Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island nuclear plant will be restarted as part of a new energy-sharing agreement with Microsoft, which plans to use it to power the data centers it operates as part of its push into artificial intelligence. Today, energy has become the new coin of the realm for companies investing in artificial intelligence. That's because the data centers tasked with running the complex calculations needed to power artificial intelligence applications require enormous amounts of power. Restarting Unit 1 will mean bringing 800 megawatts back onto the grid, greater than the amount of hydroelectric power supplied by the Hoover Dam. Microsoft's vice president of energy touted the clean-energy benefits of reviving the facility in a statement.

A Republican-controlled chamber could thwart Harris’ nominees to fill out her administration and the courts, along with her legislative agenda. Top Senate Republicans told NBC News she would need their sign-off to secure votes on any judicial nominees, including for the Supreme Court. The prospect of a split Congress looms over a possible Harris win even if Democrats have a strong year and sweep every swing state. And if it’s a GOP-led Senate, Republicans would control a floor vote. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, would have seniority to be the next Judiciary Committee chair and said he intends to claim the position if Republicans win control.

Changing attitudes to abortionDespite the country previously having highly restrictive abortion laws, abortion has not historically been the lightning rod in South Korea that it has been in the United States. If overpopulation had once prompted the government to push abortions, South Korea was now dealing with the opposite problem. It is impossible to know the true number of abortions that take place each year in South Korea because the procedure is unregulated.
