NEW YORK, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Oil prices rose on Wednesday following unexpected drawdowns in U.S. crude and fuel stocks, and as the U.S. dollar pulled back from recent gains, boosting commodities prices. Brent crude futures were up $2.82, or 3.3%, at $89.09 per barrel by 12:31 p.m. EST (1631 GMT). U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose $3.20, or 4.1%, to $81.70 a barrel. The dollar hit a fresh two-decade peak against a basket of currencies on Wednesday before pulling back. A strong dollar reduces demand for oil by making it more expensive for buyers using other currencies.

At least 75% of the Florida citrus belt is under threat of heavy flooding rains over the next 36 hours, according to satellite imagery provider Maxar Technologies. And the timing of the storm is difficult for farmers in Florida as citrus crops are nearing harvest season. Citrus production was already under significant pressure even before Hurricane Ian.

Hedge funds and other money managers sold the equivalent of 8 million barrels in the six most important petroleum-related futures and options contracts in the week to Sept. 20. Funds have sold a total of 186 million barrels over the 16 weeks since the start of June, according to records published by ICE Futures Europe and the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Middle distillates such as diesel and gas oil are mostly used in freight transportation, manufacturing and mining, so they are heavily geared to the business cycle. Fund managers have cut their position in mid-distillates in each of the last three weeks by a total of 39 million barrels as fears of a recession have intensified.
