China's BYD opens its first electric vehicle (EV) factory in Southeast Asia, a fast-growing regional EV market, in Rayong, Thailand, July 4, 2024. China's BYD opened an electric vehicle plant in Thailand on Thursday, the automaker's first factory in Southeast Asia, a fast-growing regional EV market where it has become the dominant player. "Thailand has a clear EV vision and is entering a new era of auto manufacturing," BYD CEO and President Wang Chuanfu said at the opening ceremony. The BYD plant is part of a wave of investment worth more than $1.44 billion from Chinese EV makers who are setting up factories in Thailand, helped by government subsidies and tax incentives. CNN —A police officer who was part of the security escort for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was killed in a traffic accident in the German city of Stuttgart on Monday. Orban was on his way to the airport, after watching Hungary defeat Scotland in a dramatic Euro 2024 match the previous evening. The Hungarian prime minister wasn’t harmed in the accident and continued his journey to Stuttgart Airport as planned, a police spokesperson told CNN. The 61-year-old officer was critically injured in the collision and later died in the hospital, according to police. CNN —Sha’Carri Richardson has qualified for her first Olympic games after winning the 100-meter final on Saturday at the Olympic trials at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Richardson finished in first place with a time of 10.71 – the fastest time in the 100m in the world this year – to book her spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics with the US Olympic team. Richardson’s training partner Melissa Jefferson and Twanisha Terry also qualified for the Paris Olympics after finishing in second and third place, respectively. Sha'Carri Richardson crosses the finish line of the women's 100 meter dash final at Hayward Field Saturday. Richardson added a second gold to her haul, anchoring the American 4x100 relay at the same event.
