Nearly eight years ago, the Pittsburgh Pirates began a three-game series on the road against the Detroit Tigers with a 5-4 win in 14 innings. Yankees Manager Aaron Boone said he expects the matchup between veteran aces to add “a little extra buzz” to the crosstown rivalry. Cole and Verlander will always be linked for the two seasons they bullied major league batters while anchoring the Houston Astros’ starting rotation. In 2018 and 2019, the two years Cole spent with the Astros, Houston’s co-aces combined to go 72-25 with a 2.62 E.R.A. In 2019, they led the Astros to their second American League pennant in three seasons, though they lost the World Series to the Washington Nationals in seven games.

With two outs during Chicago's four-run eighth, Gomes lined an RBI single to right field for his fifth career four-hit game.
The Masters Tournament began Thursday in Augusta, Georgia. Major sporting events like the Super Bowl, US Open, and MLB World Series all boast much higher food prices. In other professional sports leagues, like the NFL, MLB, and tennis, refreshments at their major events can cost nearly triple. A 16-ounce bottle of water at each stadium cost attendees just under $5, per ESPN. However, unlike many other major sporting events, the US Open permits guests to bring their own food and drinks into the tournament with some restrictions, helping attendees curb costs.

MLB Opening Day rosters feature 269 international players
  + stars: | 2023-03-31 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
March 31 (Reuters) - The number of players born outside the United States that featured on Opening Day rosters dipped 2% to 269 compared to last year, Major League Baseball (MLB) said on Friday. The number of internationally-born players represents 28.5% of a total pool of 945 players and trails only the 2020 (291) and 2022 (275) seasons. As has been the case each year since MLB began releasing the data in 1995, the Dominican Republic led the way among countries and territories outside the United States with 104 players, its second-highest total since 2020 (110). For the third consecutive season, the Houston Astros have the most internationally-born players with 16, followed by the Minnesota Twins (15), San Diego Padres (15), Miami Marlins (13) and New York Yankees (13). Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-USA TODAY SportsNEW YORK, March 30 (Reuters) - American League MVP Aaron Judge kicked off the New York Yankees season in style on Thursday, launching a solo homer in his first at-bat of the year in a 5-0 win over the San Francisco Giants. Judge quickly reminded the sellout crowd at Yankee Stadium why hope springs eternal for the 27-times world champions, however, launching one over the center field wall after assuming the captain's job in the off-season. While Judge is coming off a blockbuster 2022 in which he broke the AL single-season home run record, however, he cannot do it alone. Judge and DJ LeMahieu added to the advantage with an RBI each in the seventh.

Wynn Resorts (WYNN) reported promising fourth-quarter results Wednesday and even better guidance as the casino operator looks to profit from China's reopening. Along with a rebounding Macau, the casino operator's Las Vegas and Boston operations posted strong results that have continued into the current quarter. The near-term outlook for Wynn is as bright as it's been since the start of the pandemic. For the full year, Las Vegas generated $816 million of normalized adjusted property EBITDA, and management said it's "confident that this is an all-time record for a standalone Las Vegas Strip property". Wynn Las Vegas remains closed as a result of the statewide shutdown due to the continuing spread of the coronavirus on April 27, 2020 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Penn Entertainment on Thursday became the first U.S. gambling company to post a profit in its sports betting business during the final three months of a year. Usually, it's tougher to turn a sportsbook profit during the third and fourth quarters because companies spend more on marketing and promotions during football season. Penn's interactive business, which also includes online casino games, made a $5.2 million profit on $208 million in revenue during the fourth quarter of 2022. Caesars also took a hit from Mattress Mack's baseball bet, which blocked its own ability to turn a profit in sports betting in the fourth quarter, according to results pre-released as a result of a debt refinancing. Still shares declined Thursday, after CEO Jay Snowden, on an earnings call, blamed overall lackluster fourth quarter earnings on bad weather in December.
Sen. Ted Cruz entered Monday night ecstatic about the TCU Horned Frogs' chances. #frogsby90," Cruz wrote on Twitter before the game. Led by Quarterback Stetson Bennett, a former walk-on player, Georgia stomped TCU 65-7. According to ESPN Stats and Info, the win is the largest margin of victory in a bowl game in college football history. Georgia enters next year with another chance at history: becoming the first team of the polling era to win three straight national titles.
CNN —The San Francisco Giants and two-time All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa have reportedly agreed to a franchise record, 13-year deal worth $350 million, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan and MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, citing unnamed sources. The deal is the largest for a shortstop in MLB history, according to Passan. Correa signed with the Minnesota Twins on a three-year, $105.3 million deal, according to the salary tracking website Spotrac, in March. He won his first ever Gold Glove, which is awarded to the best defender in each position, in 2021. The 28-year-old has batted .279 with 155 homers and 553 RBIs in eight MLB seasons.
CNN —New York Yankees and slugger Aaron Judge have reportedly agreed on a nine-year deal worth $360 million, sources told ESPN, The Athletic senior writer Ken Rosenthal and MLB Network insider Jon Morosi on Wednesday. The slugger comes off a historic season with the Yankees. Maris hit 61 home runs 61 years ago in 1961, breaking Babe Ruth’s record of 60 set in 1927. Barry Bonds set the major league record with 73 home runs in 2001. Judge finished his stellar 2022 season leading Major League Baseball in home runs (62), RBIs (131) and runs (133) in 157 games.
The man who threw a White Claw at Sen. Ted Cruz said he wanted the politician to chug it. Arcidiacono apologized to Cruz, his family, and his security detail, asking the senator "for grace" and to decline charges against him. Cruz was filmed being hit by the beverage while he attended an Astros victory parade on Monday. Police said Cruz was struck by a beer can, but the senator later said the beverage was a White Claw seltzer. Cruz told Insider's Lauren Frias in a statement that he was thankful the man who threw the beverage had a "noodle for an arm."
Over time, McIngvale continued making million-dollar sports bets. During the 2019 World Series, McIngvale travelled the country by private jets to place bets on Astros winning at betting sites in three different states. When the Houston Astros lost to the Washington Nationals, McIngvale lost at least $11.6 million in wagers. He has also made bets on Houston sports teams playing in the NFL playoffs, the Kentucky Derby, and the Superbowl. McIngvale signs a basketball used during the 2019 NBA Playoffs between Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, was hit with a beer can during Monday's World Series victory parade for the Houston Astros and an arrest was made, police said. Cruz was on a float in Houston at the 2400 block of Smith Street when the can was thrown, the Houston Police Department tweeted. “The beer can struck the Senator in the chest/neck area,” police said, adding that he was not injured. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, center, attends the Houston Astros Championship Parade in Houston, on Nov 7, 2022. The Houston Astros beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 Saturday in game six of the World Series to take the championship for the second time in team history.
Mattress Mack's record-breaking $75 million payout on a wager that the Houston Astros would win the World Series will cost Caesars and Penn Entertainment big in their digital businesses this quarter. With the Astros' second-ever World Series win on Saturday, McIngvale clinched a $75 million payout. "I think if Mattress Mack doesn't hit, we'll be profitable in Q4," Snowden said then. We just wrote the biggest check in sports betting history to Mattress Mack for $30,000,000. "My real interest is making sure the customers win because the customers will be happy and thrilled and smiling," he said.
Police said a man threw a White Claw can at Sen. Ted Cruz during the Houston Astros parade Monday. Cruz was on a parade float celebrating the team's World Series win when he was struck by the can. "As always I'm thankful for the Houston Police and Capitol Police for their quick action," Cruz said in a statement to Insider. "I'm also thankful that the clown who threw his White Claw had a noodle for an arm." Editor's note: November 7, 2022: This story has been updated to reflect with a statement from Sen. Cruz, who said that he was struck by a White Claw can, not a beer can.
CNN —Dusty Baker was sitting in the dugout, looking down and making a note when his coaching and support staff spontaneously mobbed him, chanting his name, as the Houston Astros secured victory in the World Series on Saturday. “I mean, I got 2,000 wins and all they talk about is I haven’t won the World Series yet, you know?” he said before the game, according to MLB.com. David J. Phillip/APWith this victory, Baker became the third Black manager to win the World Series after Dave Roberts and Cito Gaston. Fans hold up a sign for Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker during Game 6. Before coaching, Baker enjoyed a successful playing career, winning the World Series in 1981 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and his 40 years in between titles is the most between any two consecutive World Series won as a player or manager, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
