Fulton County prosecutors asked a Georgia appeals court this week to restore six charges against former President Donald Trump that were tossed in his indictment over attempts to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state. In a court filing, prosecutors from Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis' office requested that the state's Court of Appeals reinstate six counts, including three against Trump, that she said Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee wrongly discarded earlier this year. "The trial court erred by quashing six counts of the indictment in this case, each of which alleged the crime of Solicitation of Violation of Oath by Public Officer," they wrote. The three solicitation counts against Trump included accusations that he solicited Georgia House Speaker David Ralston and twice solicited Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. Four of the original 19 co-defendants in the case have pleaded guilty, while Trump, Meadows, Giuliani and the others have pleaded not guilty.

Jeffries is hoping to win back the House majority with twin messages of “people over politics” and a promise to curb the chaos of the House GOP. And while he said that House Democrats will strive to work with “traditional Republican colleagues on any issue, whenever and wherever possible,” he sees Trump as different. JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee, falsely claimed Sunday that former President Donald Trump “didn’t go after his political opponents” during his presidency – an assertion that is contradicted by a mountain of evidence. As president, Trump publicly and privately pressured the Justice Department, and others in his administration, to investigate or prosecute numerous political opponents. Trump made extensive behind-the-scenes efforts to get his political opponents charged with crimes. But you don’t have to rely on investigative reporting or the memoirs of former administration officials to know that Trump went after political opponents as president. As CNN reporter Marshall Cohen has noted, there is a long list of political opponents whom Trump publicly called for the Justice Department and others to investigate or prosecute.

China’s military exercises around Taiwan, a democracy of 23 million people, have become increasingly frequent in recent years and have tended to coincide with events that have angered Beijing. In August 2022, China launched a week of military drills following a visit to the island by then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Ahead of the drills, the Eastern Theater Command released a propaganda video entitled “prepared for battle” on its social media accounts. The PLA did not say whether the drills involved live fire exercises, and, as of now, China has not launched any missiles. A total of seven Chinese warships plus additional Coast Guard vessels were detected near the Taiwan Strait, according to the ministry.
