Tottenham and NFL extend partnership through 2029-30 season
  + stars: | 2023-09-14 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Tottenham first hosted NFL fixtures in October 2019, a year later than planned due to delays with the stadium's construction. Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the only stadium purpose-built for NFL games outside of the United States, has already hosted 12 of the league's 32 teams and will be given official status as the "Home of the NFL in the UK." "Growing the game globally is a major strategic priority for the league," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a joint news release. "Our commitment to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will allow us to continue to bring extraordinary NFL experiences to fans in London, while creating a positive social and economic impact on the local community." "Our partnership with the NFL has been integral to our wider vision for the stadium and delivering a sports and entertainment destination in London," said Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levy.

Sept 14 (Reuters) - Luton Town manager Rob Edwards said it was disrespectful to dismiss the club's chances of retaining their Premier League status after just three games, as he called on his side to embrace the challenge of proving their doubters wrong. Luton, who are back in the top flight after a 31-year absence, have lost all three of their league games this season, conceding nine goals and scoring twice. In a BBC column earlier this month, former Tottenham Hotspur striker and pundit Garth Crooks said he couldn't take Luton seriously, adding he was expecting to "see them down by Christmas". Asked about the comments, Edwards told reporters: "I think after three games it is disrespectful (to say we are certain to be relegated). "Every game is an opportunity for us to get points and we have to see it like that," Edwards added.

LONDON, Sept 14 (Reuters) - The euphoria that greeted the start of Newcastle United's season has been replaced by a sense of deflation after three successive Premier League losses has left them 14th in the table. "It's never been lost on me how difficult the Premier League is," Howe said after the Brighton defeat. MASTER GUARDIOLAWhile juggling the demands of the Premier League and the Champions League will be new for Howe, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has mastered the art. These are heady days for fourth-placed West Ham with a Europa League campaign starting next week, but they have not enjoyed a Premier League win at home to City since 2014. Sept 13 (Reuters) - Tottenham Hotspur's misfiring forward Richarlison said he will seek psychological help on his return to England after shedding tears when he was substituted during Brazil's 5-1 thrashing of Bolivia last Friday. The 26-year-old Brazilian was photographed crying on the bench after being taken off 71 minutes into the 2026 World Cup qualifier in Belem. "Now things will start to flow and I'm sure I'll have a good run at Tottenham and make things happen again. BERLIN, Sept 1 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich's dreadful recent record against Borussia Moenchengladbach won't be on their minds when the sides meet on Saturday, with the champions clear favourites to win, said Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel. Since the 2011/12 season no other team has won more matches against Bayern in the league, with Gladbach boasting 10 victories, with nine defeats and five draws. "Because we do not believe in streaks if they go against us," Tuchel said jokingly on Friday when asked why Bayern would snap their opponents' run. "But we are still the favourites going into the game and are going there to win," he told a press conference. "Against Gladbach we have to pick up where we left off against Werder Bremen and the second half against Augsburg," Tuchel said.

But anticipation is building for the visit of West Ham, who will become the first top-flight team to play a league match at Kenilworth Road since Aston Villa 31 years ago. The volume created by the Hatters fans crammed in on Friday will shake the 118-year-old stadium to its foundations. Forward Cauley Woodrow, who scored in the League Cup win at Kenilworth Road against Gillingham this week, said Luton needed to turn their home into an intimidating 'fortress'. Arsenal's priority will be avoiding any repeat of the early goals they have conceded on a regular basis at home of late. BOURNEMOUTH, England, Aug 26 (Reuters) - James Maddison opened his account for Tottenham Hotspur with the first goal in his side's impressive 2-0 victory at Bournemouth in the Premier League as the visitors maintained their unbeaten start to the season on Saturday. Bournemouth threatened to get back in the game in the second half, but Dejan Kulusevski doubled Tottenham's lead just past the hour with a neat finish following a slick build-up. Against Bournemouth his range of passing and quick thinking gave Postecoglou's side an attacking impetus that the hosts found hard to contain. "I'll keep doing what I do and bringing the quality I can, repaying the club and why they bought me," Maddison said. Christian Eriksen began the comeback after 17 minutes when he touched in Marcus Rashford's cross but for all United's pressure, Forest still packed a substantial threat. But they responded in determined fashion to win a Premier League game at Old Trafford from two goals down for only the third time. In doing so Awoniyi became the first Forest player to score in seven successive Premier League appearances. Rashford dinked in a free kick and Fernandes headed the ball across to Casemiro who made up for missing an earlier sitter. Almost inevitably, Fernandes supplied the winner, although it was tough on Forest who had chances to grab a point in 13 nervous minutes of stoppage time.

The Bavarians have won the last 11 consecutive league crowns but they needed a Borussia Dortmund slip-up on the final matchday last season to retain it. A 3-0 loss to RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup at home on Saturday left Tuchel, who took over from Julian Nagelsmann late last season, fuming. Kane's German debut, with a low-key substitute appearance in the second half of their Super Cup loss, did little to dampen Bayern fans' enthusiasm and expectations. Their Super Cup win over Bayern gave them an early shot of confidence but they will have to repeat it again on Saturday when they face ambitious Leverkusen in their season opener. "We can improve many things but this obviously did give us a push," said Leipzig coach Marco Rose of the win against Bayern.

LONDON, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Newcastle United face the first big test of their Premier League title aspirations on Saturday but the trip to champions Manchester City could be coming at the right time for the table-topping Magpies. "Thank you so much to the Premier League for letting us play on Saturday, and not on Sunday and Monday," Guardiola said sarcastically of the 72-hour turnaround from Wednesday's game. Newcastle have yet to win a Premier League match at The Etihad but the arrival of Italy's Sandro Tonali has boosted an already strong midfield featuring Brazil internationals Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton. Guimaraes explained on a Brazilian podcast last month how much he has hated playing City in the past, so good were their players.
