A third straight day of marathon negotiations between Hollywood studios and striking screenwriters ended on Friday night without a deal. But the sides made substantial progress, according to three people briefed on the talks. The sides plan to reconvene on Saturday. For the third day in a row, several Hollywood moguls directly participated in the negotiations, which ended a little after 8 p.m.Robert A. Iger, Disney’s chief executive; Donna Langley, NBCUniversal’s chief content officer of Universal Pictures; Ted Sarandos, co-chief executive of Netflix; and David Zaslav, the chief executive of Warner Bros. During the Thursday negotiations, the sides had narrowed their differences, for instance, on the topic of minimum staffing for television show writers’ rooms, a point that studios had been unwilling to engage on before the guild called a strike in early May.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Public support for striking Hollywood actors and writers is broad, but not necessarily deep enough for most people to change their viewing habits, a new poll finds. Half of Americans (50%) approve of writers and actors striking, while 40% are neutral on the topic, and 9% disapprove. About six in 10 Americans have heard “a lot” or “some” about the labor strikes of writers and actors against Hollywood studios. Overall sympathy toward the writers and actors runs much more strongly among Democrats (70%), than Independents (47%) and Republicans (39%). Alternatively, only 10% say it would be good for studios to use AI to help write movies and TV shows.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hollywood studios and striking screenwriters are resuming negotiations for the second consecutive day Thursday. The talks could potentially put an end to the nearly five-month dispute that has brought many film and television productions to a halt. He also said his sources warned that should the deal not close, the strike is likely to continue until the end of the year. The WGA strike is nearing record length. Should it continue through Sept. 30, it will be the longest in the union’s history and the longest Hollywood strike since 1945.

New York CNN —The Writers Guild of America could be getting close to a deal to end a nearly five-month strike against Hollywood studios and streaming services. But filming of movies and shows would not be able to resume unless the union representing actors also reaches a deal. Many productions had halted even before SAG-AFTRA joined the WGA on strike July 14. But who appears on those shows should they return before the end of the actors strike is unclear. SAG-AFTRA members are prohibited by union rules from promoting their films and shows while on strike.

CNN —The striking writers and heads of the four big Hollywood studios have concluded a “marathon session” of negotiations, which lasted more than ten hours, without reaching a deal Thursday evening, a person familiar with the matter told CNN. It’s unclear when the studios and writers will meet again to continue negotiations. Discovery chief David Zaslav, Disney chief Bob Iger, Netflix co-chief Ted Sarandos, and NBCUniversal studio chairman Donna Langley — resumed negotiations on Wednesday with the Writers Guild of America. After the meeting, both sides issued a rare joint statement noting their discussions would continue the following day. Many productions had halted even before SAG-AFTRA joined the WGA on strike July 14.

Members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild walk the picket line outside of Fox Studios in Los Angeles, California, on August 9, 2023. Film and TV production ground to a halt 100 days ago when writers downed their pens, only to be joined on the picket lines in mid-July by actors. Writers and producers are near an agreement to end the Writers Guild of America strike after meeting face to face on Wednesday, people close to the negotiations told CNBC. While optimistic, the people noted, however, that if a deal is not reached the strike could last through the end of the year. This appears to be the closest the two sides have come to a resolution since the more than 11,000 film and TV writers went on strike beginning May 2.

ELLEN STUTZMANEllen Stutzman was the one sitting across the table from Lombardini in the failed negotiations that led to the writers strike. Stutzman, also an attorney, took over as chief negotiator for the Writers Guild on Feb. 28, just two weeks before contract talks began. She still has the title from her previous role: assistant executive director for the Writers Guild of America West. Drescher's less-known counterparts on the writers' side — technically two unions that unite for negotiations and strikes — are Michael Winship and Meredith Stiehm. Some Hollywood studios have long-term leases in place at soundstages and can control what they film and when, but most producers book stages for specific productions. And until the strikes are resolved, it's difficult to plan ahead, so most productions are waiting to move forward. But several high-level studio execs, studio investors, and producers told Insider the gears are starting to turn, with some productions beginning scenario planning. Of course, no one's expecting spending on new entertainment to be what it once was once the strikes end. Some projects were ready to start production, with sets already built, or were in mid-production on a TV series.

Sept 19 (Reuters) - Walt Disney (DIS.N) said on Tuesday it would nearly double its capital expenditure for its parks business to about $60 billion over the next 10 years. Disney CEO Bob Iger and Josh D'Amaro, the company's parks chief, announced the accelerated pace of investment at a gathering of Wall Street analysts and investors at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, focused on the company's parks business. Parks have become a reliable profit engine for Disney and has helped cushion losses in the Disney+ streaming business, which is expected to become profitable only next year. The announcement of the planned investment followed a slowdown at Walt Disney World in Orlando, as attendance surges at its parks around the world, particularly Shanghai Disney Resort and Hong Kong Disneyland. Disney also plans to nearly double the capacity of its cruise line, adding two ships in fiscal 2025 and another in 2026.

Bill Maher Reverses Decision to Restart Show

Bill Maher said on Monday that he would delay the return of his show, just days after he had said it would resume despite the ongoing screenwriters’ strike against Hollywood studios. Mr. Maher said he reversed his decision to restart his weekly HBO show, “Real Time With Bill Maher,” because contract negotiations between Hollywood studios and striking screenwriters were set to resume this week. Mr. Maher said in a post on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that his earlier decision to restart the show — which he announced last week — came when “there was no end in sight” to the strike. His change of heart followed similar reversals from talk show hosts like Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Hudson over the weekend. Ms. Barrymore said on Sunday that she was pausing the restart of her talk show, “The Drew Barrymore Show,” after facing a barrage of criticism, including being dropped as the host of the National Book Awards.

Members of the Writers Guild of America East are joined by SAG-AFTRA members as they picket at the Warner Bros. The Writers Guild of America said Monday that the union will resume negotiations with Hollywood studios on Wednesday as a shutdown of productions across the TV and movie business drags on. The union told its members to continue joining picket lines as the talks resume. In a first for visual effects workers, Marvel Studios VFX artists voted unanimously last week to join the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees union. Elsewhere, actor Drew Barrymore and comedian Bill Maher faced widespread criticism when they announced the return of their talk shows despite the WGA strike.

Other unions are digging in as well. The Writers Guild of America is in the fourth month of its strike against major Hollywood studios, while the actors’ union, known as SAG-AFTRA, is in its second. A Gallup poll published in August found that 67 percent of Americans approve of unions, the fifth straight year such support has exceeded the long-term polling average of 62 percent. Time is running out for Congress to reach a compromise to keep the government running past Oct. 1. The confab is part of an effort to lay groundwork for a meeting between President Biden and President Xi Jinping in San Francisco in November.

Contract negotiations between Hollywood studios and striking screenwriters could restart next week, the studios said in a statement on Thursday. A return to bargaining — the last talks were held three weeks ago — could be a turning point in the strike, now in its fifth month. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which bargains on behalf of entertainment companies, and the Writers Guild of America, which represents more than 11,000 television and film writers, have been squabbling over procedure. Union leaders, who denounced the disclosure, have since insisted that the onus is on studios to keep improving their offer. On Wednesday, the Writers Guild made a move, according to the statement by the studio alliance.

“The writers have important issues that I sympathize with, and hope they are addressed to their satisfaction, but they are not the only people with issues, problems, and concerns,” he wrote. Tens of thousands of actors have been on strike for two months as well, the first time writers and actors have walked out at the same time since 1960. But over the past three weeks, bargaining has again stalled out, frustrating some big-name Hollywood showrunners in the process. More than 11,000 writers walked out in early May, arguing that their compensation levels and working conditions have deteriorated in the streaming era. The strike caused many talk shows to go dark, including “The Tonight Show,” “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” and “Saturday Night Live.”

Hollywood writers and actors have been on strike for over four months. The impact on California's economy has been enormous – reaching almost $5 billion. Caterers, dry cleaners, drivers, and other small enterprises are among those most affected, says one researcher. Todd Holmes, an entertainment industry professor at Cal State Northridge, had predicted a $3 billion blow to California's economy in the first 100 days of the strike.
