LIMA, Peru—Thousands of antigovernment protesters descended on Peru’s capital on Thursday, seeking to ratchet up pressure on embattled President Dina Boluarte to resign after weeks of deadly clashes in mountains of the southern Andes. The protesters from Peru’s largely indigenous and poor highlands arrived aboard buses and marched through the streets of downtown Lima, saying the government was responsible after several dozen people died in clashes with state security forces in the past six weeks.
‘Wildheart’ Review: Saga of a Scots Pine on PBS
  + stars: | 2023-01-18 | by ( John Anderson | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
Making a single tree the star of a wildlife special wouldn’t seem like the path to electrifying programming, but “Wildheart”—titled after the 500-year-old Scots pine at the center of this “Nature” presentation—is not just enchanting in its approach to the flora, fauna and history of the Scottish Highlands, but a novel way to get into the subject, even if the process does take anthropomorphism to new heights. The tree in question, treated as a character in its own drama by narrator Thoren Ferguson , has been a mute witness to history since Mary Queen of Scots was a child; in a fanciful bit of dramatic recreation, the tiny royal tosses a pine cone, which takes root in the country where she was crowned at nine months of age, betrothed to the son of Henry VIII of England and, after treaties fell apart and tension mounted, secreted away in what the Romans had dubbed the Caledonian forest. By 1549, when the pine had attained a height of about two feet, Mary was already in France, temporarily safe from dynastic battles and French-English-Scottish politics.
DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Climate change is increasing malaria infections, the executive director of the world's biggest health fund said in Davos on Monday. Huge surges in malaria infections followed recent floods in Pakistan and cyclones in Mozambique in 2021, said Peter Sands, the executive director of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. He said climate change was also changing the geography of mosquitoes. Sands runs the world's largest global fund, which invests in fighting tuberculosis, malaria and HIV/AIDS in some of the poorest nations in the world. Looking ahead, climate change is just one of the factors that could hamper efforts to eradicate the diseases, Sands said.

MEXICO CITY, Dec 1 (Reuters) - The Netherlands has returned 223 pre-Hispanic archaeological pieces to Mexico, Mexico's foreign ministry said on Thursday, as it looks to recover more of its cultural heritage held in foreign collections. The returns were the result of "active cooperation" between the two countries and showed a commitment to restore historical and cultural objects to their place of origin, the ministry said. The INAH this week denounced a Paris auction that included Mexican objects valued in the thousands or tens of thousands of euros. The Netherlands this year returned a collection of 343 pre-Hispanic era ceramics to Panama. Culture ministers from around the world have pledged to boost efforts to return stolen and illegally traded artifacts to countries of origin.

But many campaigners believe King Charles III presents a unique opportunity: They think most royalism was actually fondness for the widely loved queen, and he — a new, less popular king — won't inherit this support. The English Civil War resulted in the beheading of King Charles I, before the "Glorious Revolution" saw English elites effectively choose a new monarch who gave lawmakers more rights. William, Prince of Wales, and Catherine, Princess of Wales, look at floral tributes to the queen at Sandringham Estate on Thursday. Some observers agree that Charles should be viewed in an entirely new light now that he is king. “The monarchy knows statesmanship is about knowing to give up what you can no longer keep,” she said.

I've budgeted $50,000 for travel in 2019, and I'm not the least bit sorry. That said, we also choose to spend on travel over other things, like living in a bigger home or driving fancier cars. Keep in mind though, we would spend considerably more on travel (or need to travel less) if not for points and miles. Travel is a learning experienceMy kids are 8 and 10 years old, and our travel experiences have exposed them to so much history. The bottom lineWhile $50,000 is a lot of money to spend on travel (or anything, really), I don't regret our travel splurges at all.
