The move makes sense, given Russia's growing status as a pariah state, but it also highlights a push to unseat the dollar as a dominant force in global trade. But to strategists at the Carson Group, a scenario where the dollar isn't the world's primary reserve currency simply isn't in the cards in the near future. Are you convinced that the dollar won't lose its status as a dominant global reserve currency? Some companies in this batch of oil stocks have upsides of up to 180%, according to strategists at Bank of America. An expert from the World Gold Council pointed out that history says gold performs well in a recession.
The housing market is not a generation-versus-generation cage match. "So the fact that they are now trailing behind the baby boomer population just speaks to the difficulty of the housing market today." A lot has changed in the housing market since the NAR's survey period. In a housing market of "haves" and "have nots," equity-rich homeowners have the edge over hopeful first-time buyers. Millennials know that they have time on their side, since boomers will eventually age out of the market entirely.
March 30 (Reuters) - A jury in Utah ruled on Thursday that Oscar-winning actor Gwyneth Paltrow was not responsible for injuries sustained by a man during a ski slope collision at an upscale Park City resort in 2016. He said the injuries led to a traumatic brain injury and had sought more than $300,000 in damages from Paltrow at a civil trial. Analysis: China's Xi takes 'diplomatic dance' to Russia

"There's been kind of an increasingly pronounced diplomatic dance on China's part as the war has played out," said Andrew Small, senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund. The U.S. and European leaders have said intelligence showed China was considering sending arms to Russia, which Beijing has denied. Xi called Putin his "best friend" during a 2019 visit where they admired pandas in a Moscow zoo. It is not clear if there will be any such photo ops this time amid more serious business and the bloody Ukraine war. "Whatever support Xi gives to Russia will be on China’s terms," another European diplomat said.

Science explains why the four-day workweek could be good for employees and employers alike. There's no control group — a company or companies that maintained a five-day workweek, to compare against the four-day workweek companies. There's also a risk of "selection bias" — a particular type of company may be far more likely to volunteer for a four-day workweek trial. Here's what science has to say about the UK four-day workweek trial results. Cortisol, too, can affect sleep quality, so having fewer high-cortisol days (ahem, work days) may mean fewer days of meager sleep.

Junior doctors - who agreed in 2019 to an annual 2% pay rise as part of a four-year deal but say that is now inadequate in light of much higher inflation. Junior doctors are qualified physicians, often with several years of experience, who work under the guidance of senior doctors and represent a sizeable chunk of Britain's workforce of doctors. While nurses have paused strikes scheduled for March as their union holds talks with the government, ambulance and other health workers are planning further strike action. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's deputy spokesperson said news of the junior doctors' strike was "disappointing". The Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association said the fewer than 1,000 junior doctors in its membership would also stage a separate three-day strike from March 13.

The BMA describes junior doctors as those who are qualified in clinical training and have up to eight years' experience working as a hospital doctor or up to three years in general practice. Another trade union for doctors, the Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association, said its junior doctor members had also voted to carry out strike action in a separate ballot. More than 10,000 ambulance workers were on strike on Monday, while the nursing trade union last week announced a fresh 48-hour strike from March 1.

Sri Lanka increased electricity prices by 66% on Thursday, in a move that the government hoped would persuade the International Monetary Fund to provide urgent support for its crisis stricken economy. The scale of the price rise will heap misery on Sri Lankans already struggling with inflation running at 54.2%. "We know that this will be hard on the public, especially the poor but Sri Lanka is caught in a financial crisis and we have no choice but to move towards cost reflective pricing," Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera told reporters. "We hope that with this step Sri Lanka has moved closer to getting the IMF programme." The size of the price rise was confirmed by a Ceylon Electricity Board official.

Walt Whitman’s Watch Over the War Dead
  + stars: | 2023-01-21 | by ( Kelly Franklin | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Looking back on the Civil War in his 1882 “Specimen Days & Collect,” Walt Whitman reflected that “the real war will never get in the books.” He had tried, in “Drum-Taps” (1865), a collection of poems forged in harrowing personal experience. Whitman had gone to the front in December 1862, when his brother George was wounded at Fredericksburg. Outside a field hospital, Whitman found a heap of amputated limbs—enough, he recorded, to fill “a one-horse cart.” His weeks with the Union army changed his life. In January 1863 he moved to Washington and began volunteering in the military hospitals. A notebook he carried that year contains drafts of one of his finest poems, the Civil War elegy “Vigil Strange I Kept on the Field One Night.”

"Diesel is my lifeline," said 54-year-old Abu al-Zait, who has seen his livelihood thrown into jeopardy by high fuel price rises since Russia invaded Ukraine. The month-long sit-in cost Jordan tens of millions of dollars in losses when it paralysed unloading at the Red Sea port of Aqaba, according to officials and industrialists. It was the latest bout of unrest in Maan, a poor tribal stronghold about 250 km (156 miles) south of the capital. Fuel price rises, combined with high taxes and spiralling food costs in a nation that imports most goods, has made life unaffordable for many. Like many Arab states, Jordan has in the last decade seen widespread unrest as it reduced food and fuel subsidies.

Carmakers will reverse out of public markets

Shares of carmakers like Stellantis (STLA.MI) and BMW (BMWG.DE) are suffering, as investors fret over a potential recession and falling car sales. It’s an opportunity for deep-pocketed funds or backers to steer them out of public markets altogether. There are risks: Carmakers are loath to borrow too much, for fear of damaging their financial services divisions. Assume a private equity buyer teamed up with the Quandt clan and acquired minority investors’ shares at a 25% premium, using debt, for 37 billion euros. If public markets dislike European carmakers, there may be a private market solution.

Celebrity crypto savant Sam Bankman-Fried is in a heap of trouble. Washington has its own giant FTX problem, in what now appears to be millions of dollars in dirty donations. It’s a donor scandal for the ages, and yet politicians are mum on what they intend to do about it. The country is learning more about FTX’s spectacular collapse, including the allegation that SBF stole billions from customers to prop up a side venture, Alameda Research. The SEC explains that FTX customer funds were diverted to Alameda to the extent that there was “no meaningful distinction,” and that SBF then used these “commingled FTX customers’ funds” to make “large political donations.” Put simply, SBF stands accused of using stolen money to fuel politics.
