CNN —A federal judge on Friday rejected former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows’ bid to move his Georgia criminal case to federal court, a significant setback for Meadows and a troubling sign for former President Donald Trump. Meadows was the first of five defendants who already filed motions to move the case to federal court – and Trump is expected to do so, too. ‘Outside Meadows’ federal role’The indictment identifies eight overt acts Meadows allegedly took in furtherance of the scheme to overturn the 2020 election results. Meadows argued that these actions were part of his federal duties – and thus, the case should be moved to federal court – but Jones disagreed. independent of its conclusion” in the Meadows case, Jones wrote.

After five years, scientists have solved the mystery of the octopus garden. © 2021 MBARINormally, deep sea octopuses have to work really hard to reproduce. The rest of their life, you'll find them drifting amongst the muddy bottoms of the deep sea, scavenging, the study said. So, there could be many other ingenious pods of cephalopods doing similar things across the sea, Berry said. "As we explore more of the deep sea, we find more and more that it's not just a homogeneous, deep, sort of mud-covered pit.

Meade is executive director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, which works to restore voting rights in the state to former felons. Amendment 4 automatically restored voting rights to former felons, except those convicted of murder or sexual offenses, who have completed their sentences. Initially, organizers projected that Amendment 4 would restore voting rights to about 1.4 million Floridians, but as a result of these new hurdles only a little over 600,000 have actually regained their voting rights, Meade said. Even after Amendment 4, felons are required to have completed their sentence before recovering their voting rights in Florida, as in virtually all other states. Intervening to restore those rights to Trump, if he’s convicted of a felony before the election, would represent a stark departure from the clemency board’s typical procedures.

In a damp, dungeonlike cell beneath a crumbling military fortress in northeast Queens, Dr. Waheed Bajwa and his team were counting sleeping mosquitoes and trying to divine the future. Soon the mosquitoes would awaken and secrete rafts of goo into puddles of standing water and lay hundreds of eggs onto them that would hatch into larvae that would feed and grow up and mate and lay eggs of their own — until sometime in late summer one of their great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-granddaughters would bite a sparrow infected with West Nile virus and then, perhaps, a human. But that day was months off. On this balmy morning in mid-February, Dr. Bajwa, a mild-mannered, methodical, relentless medical entomologist who has spent 21 years heading the city Health Department’s Office of Vector Surveillance and Control, was hoping to find signs that the coming summer would be merciful. Last year saw the highest number of human West Nile cases since 1999, when the virus first appeared in the Western Hemisphere in Queens and killed four New Yorkers.

State law would still apply if the case is moved to federal court. The federal officer removal law protects people from state prosecution for carrying out official federal duties. It says that if a person were carrying out duties placed on them by federal law, they cannot be prosecuted for committing a state crime. Legal experts said Jones could allow the case to proceed in federal court and address immunity at a later hearing. If he determines immunity did not apply to the accused actions, the jury trial would take place in federal court, with the broader jury pool.

This will be the first time that substantive arguments will be made in court about the four criminal cases brought against Trump this year. While he may still face an uphill battle to move his case, Meadows is “uniquely situated” in Willis’ case, said Steve Vladeck, a CNN analyst and professor at the University of Texas School of Law. The orders the judge has already issued have hewed tightly to the relevant statutes and case law, and he has moved the proceedings along efficiently. According to the grand jury indictment, Meadows arranged a call between Trump and Watson, and texted Watson himself to offer Trump campaign funding toward speeding up a ballot review in Fulton County. Willis also subpoenaed two lawyers who were on the Trump-Raffensperger phone call on Trump’s behalf: Kurt Hilbert and Alex Kaufman.

The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft landed on the lunar surface near the moon's south pole on Wednesday. The historic occasion marked the country as a global space power and only the fourth nation to achieve a lunar landing. Chandrayaan-3 has already returned several images and rolled out its Pragyan rover on the lunar surface. Meanwhile, Russia’s Luna 25 lander crashed into the moon, causing experts to question the country’s future lunar ambitions. No defendants have entered a plea in the Georgia case. The federal officer removal law protects people from state prosecution for carrying out official federal duties. Legal experts said the accused acts in the Georgia case are more plausibly related to official duties than the hush money payments in the New York case. CNN —As rapidly warming global temperatures help push Antarctica’s sea ice to unprecedented lows, it’s threatening the very existence of one of the continent’s most iconic species: emperor penguins. Emperor penguins rely on stable sea ice attached to land for nesting and raising their chicks. For the past few years, scientists have been sounding the alarm about a steep decline in Antarctica’s sea ice. In mid-July, Antarctic sea ice reached the lowest level for this time of year since records began in 1945. Antarctic sea ice also helps regulate the planet’s temperature, reflecting the sun’s incoming energy back to space.

Is it time to worry about stagflation?

CNN —For the past two years, economists have been worrying about the risks of high inflation rates. But far less attention has been given to inflation’s sibling: stagflation. Stagflation is the combination of high inflation and a slowing economy. The current state of stagflation: Last year, then-World Bank President David Malpass warned that stagflation risks were high because of supply chain disruptions stemming from lockdowns in China and bans on Russian oil. New York CNN —How consumers are feeling about the health of the US economy, and of their own wallets, could be showing up in the way we’re buying one particular indulgence — perfume. During periods of economic uncertainty, consumer behavior experts say shoppers tend to alter their purchase patterns, especially for discretionary goods. They either switch to cheaper alternatives, cut back on how often they buy a product, or stop buying some products completely. Perfume is no exception to these trends, as cheaper variants are seeing sales shoot through the roof. And that’s just one way in which consumers are pulling back, despite more traditional economic indicators telling a much rosier story.

In 2022, Insider reported that FEC Commissioner Trey Trainor was billed as a member of the "Trump Elections Team" at a local GOP event. Following the report, the FEC Office of the Inspector General opened up an investigation. The group did not find any ethics violations, though it said its investigation was hampered after Trainor and his counsel didn't cooperate. Following the report, the FEC's Office of the Inspector General began an investigation into Trainor's perceived ethical impropriety. REUTERS/Amir Cohen/File PhotoREHOVOT, Israel, July 17 - Every year, egg farmers kill 7 billion day-old male chicks because they cannot grow up to lay eggs and are the wrong breed for meat. A laboratory in Israel has a solution: what if the male eggs don't hatch? Day-old male chicks are normally "either macerated or suffocated or electrified. In some countries they do not even bother to cull their males properly,” explained Cinnamon, principal investigator at Israel’s Volcani Institute, which works to attain food security and food safety. Federal health officials have already asked manufacturers to produce reformulated Covid vaccines to be distributed later this year. Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention took an additional step, endorsing two new vaccines against respiratory syncytial virus for older Americans. The three shots — flu, Covid and R.S.V. But there are uncertainties about how the vaccines are best administered, who is most likely to benefit, and what the risks may be.
