CNN —The North American Aerospace Defense Command intercepted two Russian and two Chinese bombers flying near Alaska Wednesday in what a US defense official said was the first time the two countries have been intercepted while operating together. The US and Canada, which together comprise NORAD, intercepted the Russian TU-95 Bear and Chinese H-6 bombers. It also marks the first time H-6 bombers, which are a derivative of older Soviet bombers, have entered the Alaska ADIZ, the defense official said. The intercept was carried out by US F-16 and F-35 fighter jets, as well as Canadian CF-18 fighter jets, according to the defense official. In May, Russia flew four aircraft into Alaska’s ADIZ, which NORAD said at the time “occurs regularly.”But the presence of Chinese aircraft appears to be a new development.

A former Army National Guard police officer was sentenced to two and a half years in prison on Tuesday after admitting that he pepper-sprayed law enforcement officers, while a mob of former President Donald J. He surrendered two days later, and in April he pleaded guilty to assaulting, resisting or impeding officers during the Capitol riot, federal prosecutors said. Judge James E. Boasberg of Federal District Court in Washington, D.C., also sentenced Mr. Yetman to 18 months of supervised release and ordered him to pay $2,000 in restitution. Prosecutors had sought a 45-month prison term; Mr. Yetman’s lawyer, Nicholas D. Smith, had asked for 17 months. Mr. Smith declined to comment on the sentence.

A new report from Moody's on Wednesday warns that generative AI and deepfakes are among the election integrity issues that could present a risk to U.S. institutional credibility. In a letter to Rosenworcel, it encouraged the FCC to delay its decision until after the elections because its changes would not be mandatory across digital political ads. Some social media platforms have already self-adopted some sort of AI disclosure ahead of regulations. Google requires all political ads with modified content that "inauthentically depicts real or realistic-looking people or events" to have disclosures, but doesn't require AI disclosures on all political ads. Thirteen states have laws on election interference and deepfakes, eight of which were enacted since January.

CNN —A United Airlines plane lost a wheel while taking off Monday from Los Angeles International Airport, officials said, marking the latest issue this year for the airline, which was already the focus of a safety review by federal aviation officials. The Boeing 757-200 that lost its wheel completed its planned flight to Denver, where it safely landed, United said. “The wheel has been recovered in Los Angeles, and we are investigating what caused this event,” the airline said in a statement. A string of whistleblowers this year has raised allegations about Boeing factory lapses, including an official federal complaint from a current employee that Boeing hid potentially defective parts from Federal Aviation Administration inspectors, and that some of those parts likely ended up in planes. Most of the parts that were meant to be scrapped were often painted red to signify they were unsuitable for assembly lines, Meyers said.
