Oxford University Press announced Monday that “brain rot” — the catch-all term for bizarre and semi-unintelligible extremely online language — is its 2024 word of the year. "These communities have amplified the expression through social media channels, the very place said to cause 'brain rot,'" Oxford Languages President Casper Grathwohl said in a statement. Between 2023 and 2024, the term “brain rot” increased in usage frequency by 230%, according to Oxford University Press. The term is often used in "a humorous or self-deprecating manner by online communities," Oxford University Press said. As a modern energy company, it would be dedicated to “solving the global energy crisis,” its press statement reads. Unlike the Enron scandal, however, this one appears to be little more than performance art designed to sell branded hoodies. Publicly available documents show that an Akansas-based LLC called The College Company bought the Enron trademark for $275 in 2020. The strategist said “we’ll have more to share soon,” but declined to comment beyond the statement posted on the Enron site. In its statement, oddly posted as an image file on the Enron site, the company lays out its “bold new vision” to solving the world’s energy problems.

☆ ‘Brain rot’ is Oxford’s word of the year

“Brain rot” took the title in a vote in which more than 37,000 people participated, as well as public commentary and analysis of OUP’s language data. “While England endeavours to cure the potato rot,” wrote Thoreau, “will not any endeavour to cure the brain-rot – which prevails so much more widely and fatally?”All these years later, it seems brain rot is well and truly established. “’Brain rot’ speaks to one of the perceived dangers of virtual life, and how we are using our free time,” said Casper Grathwohl, president of Oxford Languages, in Monday’s announcement. “I also find it fascinating that the word ‘brain rot’ has been adopted by Gen Z and Gen Alpha… These communities have amplified the expression through social media channels, the very place said to cause ‘brain rot,’” he added. The word, which means being reserved in appearance or behavior, had already been named word of the year by Dictionary.com last week.
