Firefighters raced to contain scores of blazes across the American West on Friday night as California’s largest wildfire of the year prompted a new wave of evacuations. Federal officials say active fires have burned more than 1.8 million acres. Already this week, thousands of people have been told to evacuate, and haze from the fires has floated across the continent. The fire’s growth triggered a new wave of evacuation orders and warnings on Friday, when it was zero percent contained, according to Cal Fire. Gavin Newsom of California on Friday declared a state of emergency for Butte and Tehama Counties, in addition to Plumas County, where the Gold Complex fire had burned nearly 3,000 acres.

Two wildfires converged in the Jasper National Park area, becoming what authorities are referring to as the Jasper Wildfire Complex. Together, the fires have swallowed an estimated 89,000 acres, the Jasper National Park said. An evacuation order remains in effect for Jasper and Jasper National Park, with the vast majority of evacuees being visitors, officials said. Along with about 5,000 residents who live in the town, 2.48 million people visited Jasper National Park last year.

Gavin Newsom ordered California state officials on Thursday to begin dismantling thousands of homeless encampments, the nation’s most sweeping response to a recent Supreme Court ruling that gave governments greater authority to remove homeless people from their streets. As of late Monday, there did not appear to be any potentially serious challengers for the Democratic nomination who had not already endorsed Harris. On the contrary, Democratic governors and senators and House members have been lining up to endorse Harris, instead of waiting to see whether any potential alternatives emerge. The refusal by Democrats to entertain these calls from donors who want to slow down the nomination process is a sharp contrast to how many donors successfully lobbied lawmakers to call on Biden to drop out of the race. Biden became the first Democrat to win Georgia since 1992, when he defeated Trump by less than 12,000 votes. A Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll released this week found 47% of Black voters said Biden should continue his campaign, compared to 49% who said he should cede the nomination to someone else.
