Delta reports a profit despite service meltdown

That was partly offset from a $50 million fuel savings due to the grounded flights. Delta said it earned adjusted income of $971 million in the quarter, down 26% from a year earlier, on adjusted revenue of $14.6 billion in the quarter, essentially unchanged from a year ago, despite the hit to revenue from the service meltdown. But that was offset by a 3% increase in miles flown by passengers, as passengers soon returned to travel on Delta despite the service problems. And it reported a 9% drop in average fuel prices paid, the second largest cost at the airline behind labor costs. “I think you’re going to see it across consumer discretionary purchases as a whole,” “People want to find out what happens.

Propagandists seeking to influence elections around the globe have tried to use ChatGPT in their operations, according to a report released Wednesday by the technology’s creator, OpenAI. OpenAI said in its report that this year it has stopped people who tried to use ChatGPT to generate content about elections in the U.S., Rwanda, India, and the European Union. They also used ChatGPT to create social media posts in support of those sites, according to the report. They were part of a larger campaign that repeatedly spammed pro-party posts on X, a documented propaganda campaign that posted messages — often the same few messages — more than 650,000 times. According to OpenAI’s report, they also tried to get ChatGPT to tell them the default login credentials for other companies that provide industrial control systems software.

OpenAI is increasingly becoming a platform of choice for cyber actors looking to influence democratic elections across the globe. The threats ranged from AI-generated website articles to social media posts by fake accounts. The social media content related mostly to elections in the U.S. and Rwanda, and to a lesser extent, elections in India and the EU, OpenAI said. And in May, an Israeli company used ChatGPT to generate social media comments about elections in India. The company said that while most social media posts it identified received few likes or shares, some real people did reply to the AI-generated posts.

The relationship between Trump and Putin has long been a source of controversy. AdvertisementWith only a month to go before the presidential election, Donald Trump's relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin has once again come under the spotlight. In a forthcoming book, journalist Bob Woodward says that the former president and Putin have a closer friendship than previously known. The Ukraine war has already roiled markets for food, oil, gas, and other products, and wider conflict could have an even more devastating impact. If Russian President Vladimir Putin is victorious in Ukraine, it may embolden Chinese leader Xi Jinping to invade Taiwan.

Since then, I've been to 86 countries and have learned how to travel on a budget. I book directly with local businesses and I embrace public transportation, among other things. Now, 20 years later, I've visited 86 countries on a shoestring budget. It feels more ethical, too, as our money went straight to people living by the river instead of a tour company based elsewhere. If that is the case, make sure to book the tours while you're in the country, as it will save you money.

Major infrastructure upgrades meant to protect Florida’s Tampa Bay area from flooding are months away from completion, as the vulnerable region braces for what could be the worst hurricane in more than a century, officials said. Hurricane Milton is expected to strike the Tampa area overnight Wednesday and into Thursday morning with life-threatening storm surge of up to 15 feet, said Austen Flannery, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Tampa office. Since then, the region’s population has grown from roughly 400,000 people to 3.8 million, and the number of buildings has either tripled or quadrupled, according to the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council. The National Weather Service said Tuesday was the last full day for Florida residents to do so. “This is playing out to be one of our worst case scenarios for our area,” said Wren Krahl, the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council's executive director.

She even mentioned a key proposal in her opening answer at the presidential debate: expand the small business tax credit 10-fold, from $5,000 to $50,000. Theodos called small businesses "essential" for the US economy, and Buttle said they're a crucial source of innovation. The Pew Research study found 61% of small businesses are majority-owned by men and, as of 2021, 85% were majority-white owned. A Black teacher and musician told a federal court Thursday that members of a white nationalist hate group punched, kicked and beat him with metal shields during a march through downtown Boston two years ago. Charles Murrell III, of Boston, was in federal court Thursday to testify in his lawsuit asking for an undisclosed amount of money from the group’s leader, Thomas Rousseau. “I thought I was going to die,” Murrell said, according to The Boston Globe. The newspaper said that U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani last year found the group and Rousseau, of Grapevine, Texas, liable for the attack after Rousseau didn’t respond to a civil lawsuit Murrell filed. The silvery orb is near or at the farthest point in its orbit from our planet, so it can’t completely block the sun as it does during a total solar eclipse. Another annular solar eclipse will arrive on February 17, 2026. Finally, a total solar eclipse — such as the one that drew millions of spectators across North America last April — will once again grace the skies on August 12, 2026. To witness any of these solar eclipse events, be sure to use certified eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer to shield your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays and observe the event safely. But don’t look through any optical device — camera lens, telescope, binoculars — while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer, according to NASA.

WASHINGTON — A group of national security experts led by Cabinet members from the Trump administration endorsed former President Donald Trump on Wednesday, citing his foreign policy record and calling him "a peacemaker." The group, organized by former Trump national security adviser Robert O'Brien and former National Security Council chief of staff Alex Gray, wrote in a letter that "securing peace" is "the legacy of Trump." The letter comes amid an escalating conflict in the Middle East between Iran and Israel, as well as Russia's war in Ukraine. "The policies of the Biden-Harris Administration have invited conflict, diminished America’s standing around the globe, and imperiled our national security," the letter says. The signers do not include Trump's first secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, or his secretaries of defense, James Mattis and Mark Esper.
